    The first thing that need to be done is to get a good battery in it. Lots of codes could be caused by a low or bad battery. I would put the original ECM back in it because I'm sure that the replacement wasn't programmed.

    • @captgraybush2890
      @captgraybush2890 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Ikr, he tried to do a relearn when the computer actually would need to be reprogrammed. His little snap on Apollo doesnt have that capability. I would've hooked back up the original module that was in question. Cleared codes and rechecked the module to ensure it was the correct one for the car. Then, I would have run a drive cycle and rescanned to pull codes. But if he has a crank cam correlation code. That guys check engine light just became a change engine light. In my area, we charge around 3k to just change the three chains. That's not including any head or camshaft. A used engine from the salvage is 500- 1200 bucks.

      Let me give you some even better advice.
      Mechanics already assume you don't know much about cars or why would you even be bringing it to them? I've done 100% of the work on all the cars I've ever owned but I wasn't born with that knowledge or experience. I had to acquire it.

    • @YuckFou0x0FFFF
      @YuckFou0x0FFFF 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Oh, we already know you don't know anything about your car. That's not the issue here. The issue is when your mechanic doesn't know how to read a book. Most shops DO NOT have skilled diagnosticians. Even the mechanic in this video is clearly confused by this problem.
      #1 All of the codes share a VREF circuit.
      #2 We have a DEAD battery. There is no point in researching codes. His first call should've been to replace the battery. Do the codes persist? Check power and grounds. Fix broken or loose connection. Done.

    I remember a customer once told me that she had someone who was a "mechanic" that worked on her car. She told me, "He went to school as a mechanic."
    She was has a power but no crank issue. The guy was rambling on about, "it is a starter; It is an alternator; it is a crank position sensor." She starts to get suspicious about him and asked him some questions after installing those parts. He dodged all the questions and she had to pay for the labor as well. After that she never seen him again.
    A week later, I was working at the Napa store. She ask if there was anyone that could help fix her car. She didn't want to take the car in to the shop to get it fix because she has to wait and it was her only daily driver. I agree to help fix her car. I diagnosed her car. It was just a blown starter fuse and starter relay.

    i've seen this before. parts changers that have no clue how to diagnose issues sees a communication code in multiple modules saying lost com with ecu/pcm and assume it means bad pcm/ecu wrong that's the systems being shut down to direct all available power to the ecu/pcm due to poor charging system performance ie bad battery or alternator or poor grounds or power connection. to start any diag here the main issue needs to be resolved and that's the battery dying constantly. scream parasitic draw most likely whatever module is failing isn't going to sleep and keeping the car awake killing the battery battery is smoked from being killed too many times and a loose ground causing voltage swings especially on the 5v reference circuits. so to start with new battery cleaning on the battery wires replace if needed as well as the major ground and power connections to body and engine . when new battery is installed start immediately with a parasitic draw test giving the car a 30 minute sit to allow it to go to sleep. repair draw till within specs. as for the rest of the codes document but don't have much faith in them go ahead and clear out everything and needs to be driven a couple of days minimum and verified the battery is staying charged as well as completing hopefully at least one drive cycle and running all monitors. now read codes if theres with an excessive amount of odd random codes it is safe to assume the ecm/pcm was swapped with as used defective or misprogrammed unit and the best course is ti reinstall the other ecm and see what pops immediately up. go through and relearns it needs clear codes and then proceed to drive again complete a cycle and check codes again. GM vehicles especially are very ground sensitive and will set all sorts of random codes due to poor grounding you may very well find that 90% of the problems here is a single or multiple bad grounds. yes the engine is a bit noisy and probable timing chain issue but that's not causing the rest of the issues

    When you get a multitude of codes like that, it means the PCM is losing voltage connection, that's why it's throwing all those codes. There's a bad ground/circuit somewhere, in this case it's most likely that battery ground wire and the usual suspect for the parasitic draw is aftermarket audio, they almost never install that stuff correctly or safely. When codes like that happen start simple by figuring out what all those codes have in common, like the battery itself.

    Hey Matt I got a question. I'm interested in getting into mobile mechanics, I'm going to classes for automotive electrical diagnostics and engine performance/ drivability diagnostics.
    I'm wanting to get into going to people to help peeps but curious what you did before mobile mechanic?
    I seen a video of you saying that you never got any schooling for transmission performance and diag?
    I'm gonna be going to Paul Danner (ScannerDanner) to learn from him but curious what you needed to start bring mobile and how did you get the cash to get your tool truck and many tools. That snap on scanner is probably $5000 right?
    Can you do programming and decoding and other dealership level flashes?

    Every single car is ran thru a set voltage parametre set by the ecu. The reason why theres a code in the first plasce is because theres a voltage indifference, it isnt matching wats specified by the ecu.. after a new batt the car has internal mechanical issues that needs addressing.. by the sound its making. Loss of power happens when timing components fail or guides broken etc. Its a surgical job

    I'd even check that the ECM/ECU module has its' harness connected fully/properly... seen weird errors like the above when the connector wasn't fully seated (ie. partial contact on some pins). Given the last "mechanic" didn't seem to know what they were doing, chances are decent they didn't even install the ECM connector properly.

    One thing to check on the battery issue is I saw he had what looked like power wires for an amp. You have to have an ignition signal for both your stereo and amp to prevent them from staying on and draining the battery. Could have caused such a bad voltage draw that it made all the modules go crazy and throw tons of codes. I hope that’s the case for this poor guy anyway.

      He's generally right. They technically can and have made a good 4 cylinder, like the Iron Duke, but they can't make a modern fuel efficient 4 cylinder engine.
      In fact, they don't anymore. If you ever wondered what the hell happened to Daewoo, they were purchased and renamed to "GM Korea" but they're still the same people and are responsible for cars like the Spark, Sonic, Trax, and the Cruze.

    • @ohdawg2558

      Timing chains are great when oil is regularly changed. When metal heats it expands, hence the timing chain slack and the slip. Majority of the time it’s sadly the “I don’t know much about cars” crowd

    • @ericshackelford872

But it has turned out to be a pretty decent car. I love it. But still, I'll never buy another car without a knowledgeable man by my side. Change out battery, hook up old ECM, clear codes. Drive for what you consider to be a good test drive. Check and clear codes, drive again. Change the timing chain. Keep working with it. Dont forget to check the new battery's voltage throughout the testing. A crusher may be needed!!
