  • Introducing CJ!
Here you'll hear me describe how I'm tackling getting a very phobic, not well socialized cockatoo used to me.
CJ belonged to a high school student who had virtually no time to spend with him. He was kept outdoors (in the cage you see here) on a covered patio. By the time we adopted him he was only being let out of the cage for a few minutes every number of weeks and was so neglected that he didn't even recognize his own name. His cage had nothing but three dowel rod perches inside, the food and water dishes were stained from never being properly scrubbed, the cage was dirty, and CJ was TERRIFIED at even the sight of people.
The previous owner claimed that CJ was scared of baths (so he never got any), that he hated all vegetables so they never gave him any, and that he never played with toys so he had none. They told us that he was an 8 year old hand raised male. CJ had NEVER been taken to the vet and his nails were so long we actually ended up having to take him to have them trimmed in two parts- the first to take off the bulk of the nail and allow his quick to retract and the second to do the trim to the appropriate length.
During the vet visit we were told that based on CJ's leg band CJ couldn't have been 8 years old. His legband indicated he had gone through USDA quarantine- which meant he was wild caught as a young bird and imported to the United States legally- and the last time that practice was legal was in the late 80's! CJ is at LEAST 30 years old and parent raised. The vet also told us she was relatively certain he was actually female based on her stature and eye color in sunlight.
Luckily, even though s/he's a little elderly bird, CJ is in good condition. This is an old video, and I'm happy to say that we've actually gotten to the point where Spooky is very loving and enjoys lots of head scratches- so if you've got a parent raised or older bird and are scared you'll never be able to pet them, stay tuned! I'll be posting CJ (now renamed Spooky) videos showing the progress we made with him (her) and how we made it!

We've had her for two years now, this is old footage I just recently posted 💖 I've been a little busy and just got around to it 😅 When she came to us she was a "he" and was named CJ. She was interacted with so little in her last home that she didn't know CJ was her name. When she eventually learned that she was called CJ she didn't seem to like it at all so we changed it to Spooky, a nickname my husband called her that stuck. She perks up when you say it and seems to like it a lot better. I think it was like a nice fresh start for her 💖 99% of the time we call her "Pookie" though 😂
