Convince your Bird to Eat Vegetables with Co-eating

Our cockatiel, Taki, came to us eating a really limited dry seed blend. Even worse, he was only eating the millet out of the blend. Parrot species need a good variety of foods in their diet, and EVERY parrot's diet should include a healthy amount of fresh vegetables. Taki was having trouble getting interested in his vegetables enough to even investigate them, so I spent a few weeks putting Taki on my shoulder while eating my meals. I eventually discovered that Taki likes eating plain popcorn (homemade by putting 1/3 cup of plain corn kernels in a brown lunch sack and microwaving for 1.5 minutes) and I was able to pique his interest with the plain popcorn and hold it for long enough to get him interested in whatever else I was eating.

Please always check with your licensed and board recognized avian vet before offering any new foods to your bird. Please also ensure that any piece of food you offer your bird has not come into contact with saliva. Mammal saliva (including but not limited to humans, dogs, cats, and rodents) contains high levels of bacteria that the avian immune system is not equipped to fight off. Birds have been known to get ill from wet kisses as well as sharing food and drink with their owner. Please co-eat at your own risk.
You absolutely should not feed birds chocolate, alcohol, avocado, carbonated beverages, fermented foods or drinks, caffeine, table salt, table sugar, onion, onion-like herbs and vegetables, garlic, fruit pits and seeds, xylitol (found in sugar free candy), milk, soft cheeses, moldy cheeses, mushrooms, other fungi. This is not an exhaustive list- again, please check with your avian vet before feeding your parrot anything new.
Taki is our 8 month old Lutino cockatiel. He is most likely a "she" but we call him a "he" anyways. He's a pearl Lutino which is why he has so much yellow throughout his feathers. The pattern doesn't show up well on camera, but is very visible in person.
