Teach Your Bird Big Eagle Without Force | Training Progress

  • The "traditional" way to teach "Big Eagle" doesn't work for birds that don't like their wings touched- here's a great example of how you can easily teach "Big Eagle" to a "hands off" bird using positive reinforcement! This is an excellent trust building exercise you can do with new birds. You don't even have to hand feed them the treat if you aren't at that point in your relationship yet- you can drop the treat in a designated bowl or designated spot for your bird to pick up.
This shows your bird that you're fun and interesting to be around and that you're consistent. This "trick" comes in handy for quick hands free (non-medical) wing checks at home- if you want to take a quick look at the wing without touching your bird you can teach them "Big Eagle" and train for duration so you can get a good look. This also comes in handy for harness training! I'll be filming a new video on harness training soon. If your bird won't let you put their wing through the harness, you can use "Big Eagle" as a foundation to teach them to put their own wing through the harness without being touched by you.
    How do you do it?
Step 1: Catch your bird doing a wing extension. It's common for birds to do this while stretching- keep an eye out for it!
Step 2: Click a clicker or say "Good" to "mark" what they did to earn their reward (in this case that would be stretching their wings out- do your best to click while the wings are on their way up or at their most extended position- not while your bird is starting to put their wings down).
Step 3: Give them a favorite treat after you click or say "Good".
Step 4: Once your bird puts two and two together that stretching their wings earns them a reward start anticipating it. Say the cue you want to use shortly before they extend their wings. When they extend say "good" or use your clicker and give them a treat.
Step 6: Once your bird demonstrates a good understanding that extending their wings when you say the cue earns a treat, you can stop giving treats for wing extensions done without having said the cue first.
Step 7: After a few sessions of giving a treat for each correct repetition, you can start asking your bird to occasionally do two repetitions before earning a treat. Slowly increase the number of reps without a treat. Then eventually you can stop giving the food reward on a regular basis and switch the rewarding your bird with a cool toy to play with, some head scratches if they enjoy them, or verbal praise. If you notice the behavior getting "rusty" you can start giving treats occasionally and it'll shape back up quickly!

That's a good trick, I'll have to try it. A lot of birds just need to get to the right trust level, then you can touch their wings. But my bird, he is at the top of the trust ladder.. but I can just stick my fingers under his wings, which normally prompts the bird to spread their wings, in which you reward them for "big eagle".. but he just.. doesn't care.. I can put my fingers under his wings, on his wings, etc. He just doesn't care

Man, I never realized how easy it was! I'm probably too late, though
