  • Teaching our new bird, Zippy, how to turn a circle on cue! Positive reinforcement training (also referred to as "clicker training") is a great way to build a healthy and trusting relationship with your bird.
Why teach your bird to turn a circle? This is a great "conflicting behavior" in any parront's toolbox. Once your bird is very, very good at this behavior (will do it any time, anywhere, on cue and even in the presence of certain distractions) you can start to use it to gentle redirect your bird from undesirable behaviors. If your bird is, for example, chewing on your table they cannot both chew on the table AND turn a full circle- they will have to pick one. Since they'll have such a strong positive association with turning a circle they may choose to turn a circle instead. This interrupts the table chewing and gives you an opportunity to offer them a toy or other appropriate shreddable material or even to move them to a different location so that they will stop chewing the table.
Cool! Now how do you do it?
Step 1: Observe your bird. If they look to the left (or right) click (or say "good") and give them a reward.
Step 2: Continue clicking and rewarding looking toward a specified direction (left OR right- choose one and be consistent).
Step 3: Always reward them for completing a quarter, half, 3-quarter, or full turn.
Step 4: Once your bird is consistently turning further, increase your criteria! If your bird is consistently doing a half turn, stop rewarding simply looking in the right direction or doing a quarter turn. Only reward the half turn or better.
Step 5: Keep increasing criteria at your bird's pace until they're turning full circles almost every time. IMPORTANT: if your bird "fails" twice in a row lower your criteria. We're striving to set the bird up for success. Earning a reward should be easy for your bird. If it's not, make it easier. Don't worry- this won't make your bird "lazy".
Step 6: Once your bird has increased criteria to the point that they're doing a full turn with good consistency, add the cue! This can be a hand signal, a verbal cue, etc. Get creative (but be consistent)! Repeat this step several times.
Step 7: Let your bird "fail" once by allowing them to turn a circle without you giving them the cue first. Then anticipate their next turn and give the cue right as they start doing it- give them a reward.
Step 8: Keep "dropping" one or two repetitions that happen not on cue, then give your bird several repetitions ON cue and always reward those repetitions when done correctly.
Step 9: Once your bird understands what the cue means and has it down pat, practice in other locations- keep in mind that you will likely need to "start over" teaching this trick in each new location until your bird puts two and two together that the behavior works anywhere at all. Your bird will "relearn" the behavior MUCH faster than the time it took to teach it the first time and they'll get faster and faster with each new location.
Step 10: Once your bird will do a full turn on cue in virtually any location, you can start requesting two repetitions every once in a while before giving a treat, and/or you can start shaping for responsiveness. If your bird is taking a long time to turn a circle after hearing the cue you can start only rewarding the circles turned more quickly.

I've been preparing for my baby cockatiel for months now and unfortunately it died out of nowhere, this video made me feel a little bit better. I'm going to be getting a different cockatiel on Saturday because of what happened. Thank you for sharing your birds with the world, I'm so grateful you started making videos again.

How do u get her to do a circle b4 trests?

Watch your bird's behavior 😊 She'll randomly look to the right or start a turn. Click and give her a treat for that. Eventually she'll put two and two together that that earns a treat and will do it more often and more exaggerated. Before you know it she'll be turning a full circle.

She's eating spray millet as her training treat 💖 I have a link to some in the video description 😊 I also have a video called "What My Cockatiel Eats" that covers what their daily diets are like if that helps!

treats? Do u get her to do a circle before treats?

    • @takithetiel6854

Yes, you always give a treat AFTER the behavior is done :) First you'll just watch your bird's head movements. If she looks to her right you'll click and give her a treat. Eventually she'll realize that looking to her right earns her a treat and she'll do it more often. Start rewarding only when she turns her head further. Eventually she'll start trying a quarter turn. Click and treat after each quarter turn. Then eventually shell experiment with doing a half turn, 3/4 turn, etc. and before you know it she'll be doing full turns.
If your bird isn't offering the behavior you're looking for (looking to her right or partial turns) and is already target trained, you can use a target stick to help her figure out what to do. In target training you would give a click and treat for touching the end of the target stick with her beak. In this case you'd want to ignore whether she's touching the target stick and click and treat for making progress toward turning a circle.
      Hope that helps 💖
