    Lovely video. One idea is to plan your characters and composition on cartridge paper then when happy use a light box to transfer it to your final paper. You can draw everything separately and play about with composition. Lots of botanical artist use this method x

      Thank you😁
      Ahh yes good idea! I did used to do this more, but stopped because I like the organic, free pencil marks to show through on my artwork- it really didn’t feel the same tracing my clean ink onto an empty page. But I think this would be useful to play around with the composition more, and get my drawing started with the large shapes and position blocked in..🤔 thanks for the tip!

    Using art gum art eraser/cleaner erasers that pouderize when erasing has helped me loads when erasing on my watercolor papers. It's super gentle. Thanks for sharing! Your art is so gorgeous and it's really cool seeing the process behind a piece.

      And also thanks for the tip, I will have to look into those erasers👀 I have been wanting to get a new kneadable eraser since I lost mine years ago, I think those are also better than whatever basic ones I have

    • @HeftyBalance-fj1st

      @@laveragrace Those are definitely gentler too, but I use them to "soften" lines before inking more than straight erasing. Whatever you decide on, I hope it works out. :)

    I love how you built the background of the rocks and your color palette is so lovely. I also love the illustrators of the Golden era of children’s books when the use of 4 color reproduction made it possible for an absolute explosion of talent and color to elevate a genre to FINE ART. Beautiful painting, congratulations on showing your whole process. Drawing on camera is daunting. No matter who you are. Great job.

      Thanks so much for your lovely words! Oh absolutely, what a wonderful time for illustrated stories. I think in general children’s books nowadays could use more of those traditional styles, or just art with more of that rich detail, refinement or realism.

    Have you read an old book called The Little Merman by Ethel Reader? I find it too be delightfully different, and the illustrations are wonderful as well. Your art reminded me of it. It's lovely.

    Lavera, thank you for the video. I have a question. Is that gummed paper tape, where you wet it and adhere it to the D'Arches paper? How do you get it to stay put as the watercolor dries after stretching? How do you keep it to stay put during painting, especially when laying down very wet washes?

    • @laveragrace
      @laveragrace  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You are so welcome!
      And yes- gummed tape is what I use when stretching my paper. I have a video on my channel here about the first time I used it (it’s the sunken treasure process video).
      I wet my paper front and back, then wet the gummed side of the tape and stick down the edges of my paper. Once it is all fully dried, the paper should stay flat, no matter how many washes, and the tape doesn’t lift up at all - in fact it doesn’t really come off of the paper at all, so I either keep it on or cut the edge of the paper off.
      Alternatively, when doing smaller, quick paintings- I use my removable painters tape to stick down the edges of dry paper, then apply the wet gummed tape over most of the painters tape, and more of the excess over my board. This keeps the paper staying put and reasonably flat throughout washes, and means that I can remove any tape from the paper cleanly afterwards.
      I’m still figuring out how to perfectly stretch my paper though- and I hope this was helpful and made some sense😊
