  • The Rick Dias, mainstay MS of the AEUG, was a part of Bandai's forgotten 1/220 line of model kits that never made it past Z Gundam. This review takes a look at not only the Rick Dias itself, but also at a bit of history behind the 1/220 line and why it was established in 1985.

you know old kits like this just have that odd charm i just cant put my finger on. but still great vid with a good history lesson.

They're quite alien compared to more modern kits, and have their own set of design rules, and it makes them look like totally different things because how almost all the technologies used have been replaced by newer and better approaches:)

It's always great to see people reviewing less common/older kits, especially if the suit doesn't get much love anymore.
1/144 scale is just as weird as 1/220 though, when compared to 1/150 or 1/100

This is such a cute looking kit.
There is something to love in it's naive simplicity

That snap-fit logo would look kickass when printed on a plain t-shirt i think lol, i may need to hunt these down..
Also, i think the 1/200 kits (i vaguely remember theres an AoZ one atleast) that we get from Dengeki or Hobby Japan is the spiritual successor for this line i guess.

    • @HobbyClubhouse

I know those were in some odd arbitrary scale too, don't remember what it is off the top of my head, I wonder if it's really 1/220. Those sure have the same one-color style of these, so that'd be quite awesome if they fit together
The iro-pla logo would be great on a t-shirt too:)

@@HobbyClubhouse already found someone selling this and the marasai for ~35HKD, gonna buy and try scanning the boxarts with my wife's pro-grade scanner :D
It is 1/200 (the dengeki one i mean), so i think it would tower -a teeny bit against the 1/220s

Great review and history lesson! The graphic design of the Zeta-era packaging is so cool- reminds me of 80's Japanese automobile print advertisements. Not sure if it's due to the color, but the plastic of this kit has a waxy/ soapy look to it. Almost looks like it was sculpted from that red bar of soap Ralphie's mom crams in his mouth in 'A Christmas Story' haha.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I think it's not random that you get that feeling, there was a lot of work for illustrators at the time in Japan for industrial designs -- Kunio Okawara is probably the most notable to come out of such backgrounds. Probably a lot of cross-breeding of styles.
That soap thing is such a specific reference - but on the money... the way it's a soft red and refracts light looks a bit like it could be made out of that soap...

The kit is a torture , but i have to admit - at least it has full feet . Keeping in mind what bandai have done later with 1/144 no-grade Gundam Seed line . And again , this kind of item is completely a collector's target . Rick - Dias is great design and very nicely aged later in 2000's HGUC line even 3 times ! Sadly nowadays to get an regular bandai release is a quite a chore.

I actually really enjoy buying old kits. Having to use glue or adhesives to build some of the older ones just gives me a different build experience that I find to be a nice change of pace.
I actually bought a few of the mecha collection kits like the Gouf and Dodai Ys. And I recently purchased a 1/220 Marasai because that's my favorite Zeta grunt.

For kits even older than this, the bags were even stapled by hand by ladies (I've only seen female workers for some reason) in a warehouse around tables.
They moved onto clear tape for a good few years, and then they finally used heat-sealed bags

The articulation is sometimes overrated for mecha. Just saying you need several models for diorama. Or test some variations with modified parts.
