Hi gang, we fell in love with Battambang- so excited to bring you videos from here! Remember to follow us in real time over on Instagram stories @chasingaplate and if you enjoyed this video please give it a 👍 Thanks for watching! Big love, Thomas & Sheena 😘
Hey guys I loved watching this! Thanks for visiting my homeland! Just a bit of a word up about amok- it won’t be found in markets as it’s considered quite an old-fashioned food (it has ancient origins and is today considered passe or poverty food). Plus it’s not a dessert! It is a formal dinner dish made with either river fish, snails or mushroom. Nowadays only upmarket restaurants serve the dish, usually not done authentically. Otherwise if you happen to get invited to a rural Cambodian family barbecue they might also have it steaming away! Good luck devouring guys!
Asher Ouk hi mate, thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to write. We have been eating fish amok like crazy hahaha we love it. The jackfruit amok we have never come across again- I have seen videos of people making it but perhaps it’s just something that’s done in the home? We love Cambodia- it is a real joy to film here. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series mate. Thanks for all the information 😄 Cheers, Sheena
You guys are awesome and I’m hooked on the entire series! I think people who love Cambodia are really special people, it is a bit of a diamond in the rough. It must mean that Cambodia loves you too. So you will always be welcome to treat it as your home away from home!

Hi! We hope to get a chance one day. It would be a bit warmer than Boston at this time of year! Cambodia is an incredible country and the people are just amazing. We love our time there so much. Thank you for watching this one. Cheers, Thomas 😀
In this video, the last dessert looks like sugar palm rice cake (with coconut milk on top) and in khmer language it is called Nom Akor Tnout (with Ktis Doung). Thank you for visiting Cambodia and made vlog about local khmer food!🙏
Hi Sokvisal Long, thanks so much for that information 😄 it would have been perfect with a coffee that Nom Akor Tnout! Hope you enjoyed this video- we love Battambang so much and filming in Cambodia is turning out to be fascinating and wonderful! Thanks for watching and commenting and hope you enjoy the rest of the series 😄 Cheers, Sheena
I am happy to see that you guyz are not afraid to get food from those little food vendors. Tourists are often afraid of those because of the hygiene standards but they really need to rely on selling their items for a living. Thanks for the lovely video! Keep up the great work.
Hi Luffy3D2Y, thanks for watching and commenting mate 😄 You’re so right- those vendors earn so little. We love getting into the eating at local markets like this one. So happy you enjoyed the video! Cheers, Sheena

Hi guys thanks for sharing this video make me miss my country a lot especially Battambang is my hometown and all the places that you show I been there a lot before and my school, oh not try to correct you but that sour tamarins you have to spite the seed out because the seed is really bitter and the cake on the banana leaf it’s not jackfruit it’s palm fruit, thanks again for sharing I really miss my hometown
Amazing information! Thanks so much mate- that tamarind seed was SUPER bitter 😂 quite medicinal tasting. And thanks for the info re the palm fruit cake 😄 We loved Battambang so much- the people were so friendly and we ate so well. Hope you enjoy our next Battambang video mate. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena
My family originally came from Battambang before Khmer Rogue, but we still have a lot of family members living there, so I been to Battambang a lot! It’s a great place! I grew up in Mongkol Borey.

You guys are the first channel that make the food out of my country look really yummy. Mark Wien and Sunny used to try it but they couldn’t find the right food and spot to film. You guys have done a better job in this series. Keep up the good work and thank you.

Thanks for the welcome mate! We love Cambodia so much. It’s a special country and we can’t wait to return to film more. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Sheena
I miss Cambodia so much. I'm visiting my country next month and I can't wait to sample the food again. I missed out on a lot last time. I had a lot of what you guys had all my life. But one thing I have always wanted to try was the Portuguese-Khmer deep fried goods they make in some Phnom Penh and Siem Reap markets. Things similar to Tempura and special crab ball croquettes with sticky rice breading. Hopefully you two have luck finding it.
Oh wow Portuguese-Khmer snacks?! They sound so interesting! I bet you can’t wait to get here mate- and I bet your list of things to eat is as long as your arm 😆 we are loving our time here- the people are amazing the culture is so fascinating to discover. Thanks for watching and commenting and we hope you enjoy the rest of the series NIME 😄 Cheers, Sheena
You've got that right! But other than that, you two are doing really well finding some street food vendors that are actually good. I myself struggle to find a street food vendor that doesn't cook everything in a wok, including curries. So the bad thing about Khmer food that is amazing is that it takes too long to make. Kudos to you two for finding that red curry place that makes it properly.
Thanks so much mate! Hahaha yea good things take time 😆😆😆 but it’s always so worth it for the final result isn’t it? Looking forward to eating some more home style Khmer food like soups etc. 🤤
You got that right, all the best things take a while. Aside from trying all the new and improved street food. Those vendors have become more adept and creative at cooking, it quite inspiring to be honest. I think one day, I could invest in opening up a Khmer Sandwich shop. One thing I made was a spin on Chilli con Corne hotdogs, but instead of Chilli con corner, I used Prahok Ktiss and replaced the sausages with crispy veggies, grilled meat, cold Banh mi stuffing or using a big Spring roll as a substitute. I wonder if I'm onto a potential Khmer fast food chain that could go international?
😍😍😍 it is such a great city! We honestly fell in love with Battambang. We had such an amazing time filming there. Hope you like what we have coming up! Cheers, Sheena
Hi, nice to see both in Battambang. I miss those foods. The last one that you had, it is called Nom Achoa Tanoat. It is made from rice flour, palm fruit, palm guar/sugar, coconut milk on top, teamed in banana leaf. Some sellers they also add jack fruits
Thank you so much for making these videos especially the ones in Battambang. It reminds me how much I miss my hometown and all of those Bai Sach Jrouk I had everyday after class. The best thing was having a class just right in front of those food setups. I didn’t have to get out of the classroom to get the food. I just bought them through the window which was amazing 😄. Also, I am longing to have those sour fruit again. I got supper drooled by watching you ate the young sour green mango. I don’t think tamarind is supposed to be bitter unless you chew on its seeds. Anyway, thanks again for visiting Cambodia and making these wonderful videos. Lots of love.
Hi Andy, thanks so much for watching and for your lovely comment. I can see why you ate bai sach jrouk everyday- it was SO delicious. What a neat set up too. We loved Battambang- the food and the people were incredible. So glad you enjoyed this series! Cheers, Sheena P.S hahaha yes I ate the tamarind seeds- SO bitter! Now I know to avoid them next time 😆
Oh gosh it’s soooo good! This one was amazing, we went back a few times for it. Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed this video and like the rest of our Cambodia series. Cheers, Sheena
It wasn’t jack fruit cake. It was palm rice cake. It made from ripe palm fruit juice, rice power, palm sugar and coconut milk. The custard on the top is made of coconut milk and rice powder
😘😘😘 thanks for your kind words mate! And for that info! What a lovely gesture by the lady who sold the sour fruits 😄 Glad we learnt the cake was palm cake- we ended up seeing it loads on our travels after this day! Thanks for watching and commenting 😄 Cheers, Sheena
Your vlogs always go by so quickly! Each frame is a riot of color and texture and amazing sound. And short of being able to smell and taste the flavors of a place myself, I’m always thrilled by your descriptions. Yum!
😍😍😍😍 what a lovely message Michael thank you! It’s so inspiring and invigorating to film in markets like this- you can’t help but feel full of excitement. Thanks for watching and commenting mate, hope your week is going well! Cheers, Sheena
😍 thank you so much Benjamin Wilcox! To be able to inspire a reaction like that with our content is really humbling and thrilling. So happy we are able to share our experiences with you guys. Thanks for watching and commenting 😄 Cheers, Sheena
Ah, you make me nostalgic: Battambang is my 'home' - but I got a job in China a couple of years ago, and haven't been able to get back very much. The school food market does one of the best bai sach chrouk I've had anywhere in Cambodia. I've never heard of the jackfruit amok. Did you manage to find it eventually? (You shame me with the effectiveness of your research! I live just a few minutes away from the Boeung Chhouk market, but you seem to know more about its treasures than I do.)
You must miss the food so much. We absolutely loved our time time. So neat eating outside the school! We never found jack fruit amok. We did more research and I think it might be something that only home cooks really do and even then it’s not very common. Thanks so much for watching this one and we hope it gave you a taste of home. Cheers, Thomas 😀
😍😍😍😍 do you live abroad now Sopha PG? We love Cambodia- amazing people and wonderful food. We can’t wait to return. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Sheena
Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena yes eventhough i move here , i never forget my country , esp foods there , even u cook here but not the same flavor .
this series is really eye opener.. wow... I never know Cambodia serve food in such setup..! the market is also very unique.. the jackfruit coconut amok seems great.. you guys really great!
Thanks for watching mate and we are so happy you got to experience a Cambodian market through this video! Hahah the jackfruit amok that wasn’t. Hope we can find the real deal somewhere soon! Hope you enjoy the rest of the series mate. Cheers, Sheena
Very happy to see that you guys are eating from local basic food vendors in Khmer markets this way you are helping to promote their little businesses. Because I was in tight budget during my Cambodia trip I eat from lots of these places and I can say they gonna make people surprise
They’re great aren’t they mate? And it’s neat to support these small businesses, it’s the best way to discover a local food culture. Thanks for watching and commenting- hope you enjoyed this one mate. Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate they are definitely the best way to explore local taste. Because I have seen in Cambodia there many restaurants even small scales have manu for tourists. And Khmer people don't eat from there as it is not in their budget but also different
Amazing! Thanks so much mate- it’s so helpful to know this 😄 hope you enjoyed this video. We are eating so well in Cambodia! Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena

Thanks for watching and commenting Samhean1! We love the food here in Cambodia 😍 hahaha my Khmer is so poor but everyone is so friendly here in trying to help me learn it 😄 hope you enjoy the rest of the series! Cheers, Sheena
So fun seeing you two try a spot/food for the first time without knowing everything going on. *_Don't get me wrong, I greatly appreciate and enjoy_* when you film your videos after scouting a few times and give us all the details -- "they've been here since 1964; their rice is from cousins in a neighboring village; the grilling technique was invented by their grandfather..." -- but I absolutely love when you jump in cold (like meat and smoke alleys, Mexico) and we see your reactions. So pure. Even though the num jak chol didn't blow you away, it's interesting see you try it. Outstanding day. Love pretty much any video from a fresh market. 😀👍
😄😄😄😄 thanks Tosh! They’re definitely more stressful to film (like meat alley etc) as everything is so unknown but at the same time it’s super fun to capture that uncertainty and going with the flow. Wish that had been jackfruit amok though 😆 we haven’t seen the real thing anywhere else since but will keep looking! I adore filming at local markets- they’re so stimulating. Thanks for watching and commenting mate, so glad you enjoyed this one! Cheers, Sheena
And with the pork rice breakfast, it was comforting to me that you didn't know exactly what sauce she poured on top and what pickled veg was served on the side. That's how many of my food choices end up. I'm sure you're with me on this but I've eaten things during my travels where I am still not quite sure what it was. 😂
Thanks so much for that info mate 😄 it was tasty- should have had a coffee with it- would have made a great snack! Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed this video and like the rest of our Cambodia series. Cheers, Sheena
Yea, imagine the kids in Cambodia having that for lunch. I grew up as a kid in Asia so I know how spoilt we were in terms of food no matter how 'everyday' or supposedly low in cost they were. I guess it's just cultural differences and the things we take 'pride' in. Food might be some countries' plus point but other aspects of the culture or the way the country is run might pale in comparison to those of other countries.
@@AO-iv6yr probably even better than some college campus foods. However, i did visit the highly acclaimed ucla dorm food and documented it on my page. 🙂
Hi B k, thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, it is a very poor country and the struggle that a lot of people have to make a living is very evident. We have been so humbled by the welcome we have received when we have been filming by people who have so little. Hope you enjoy the rest of our Cambodia series mate. Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate thank you so much for your sweet reply and I can not wait to see more series from your passionate vlog. Your Vlog looks so respectful and cheerful for the local culture and the way of people living. As Cambodian myself, I was so emotional and excited at the same time seeing your vlog about my own country cuisines that is so local and so all Khmer People eat daily.

Sheena, you are supposed to spit out those tamarind seed. And BTW, it was the steam rice cake with coconut and jackfruit/palm fruit. Its a type of dessert. It's not called amok. Amok is rather a savory dish. First time watching Yr vdo. U both did a fantastic job. So lively and real. Keep it up!
🤣 I know, that seed was so bitter! And thanks for the info re the palm fruit cake. We were seeing lots of jackfruit ‘amok’ in home recipes which is why we thought it was this! What a wonderful video. I love open markets. The food is so amazing and everything looks so fresh and delicious. Why is the food so cheap?? How can they afford to make it and sell it at that price?? You could never eat a full nutritious meal in the U.S. for $1.00
Isn’t it amazing Tormented Soul? It’s the same in NZ- there is no way you could expect a full nutritious meal for only $1- not even close! The flavours of that meal were unreal- we went back twice after filming as we loved it so much. Thanks for watching and commenting on this one- we’re so happy you enjoyed it! Cheers, Sheena

I am happy to see that you guyz are not afraid to get food from those little food vendors. Tourists are often afraid of those because of the hygiene standards but they really need to rely on selling their items for a living. Thanks for the lovely video! Keep up the great work.

😍😍😍😍😍
NIME 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 yasssss do it!!
Welcome to my Homeland hope you enjoy Cambodia, my dad is from Battambang😀

Kikijade Asiangemz Oh wow so cool
Hi, nice to see both in Battambang. I miss those foods. The last one that you had, it is called Nom Achoa Tanoat. It is made from rice flour, palm fruit, palm guar/sugar, coconut milk on top, teamed in banana leaf. Some sellers they also add jack fruits
Thanks so much for the info. Are you from Battambang? Such a neat city. Thanks for watching this one. We hope you enjoyed it. Cheers, Thomas
You know so much about foods. Great video. You’re the best.
The sour fruit lady said she gave you extra. You are so welcome in Cambodia.

Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena 🤭 yup Thomas said that’s it something he expected so I look forward for the next episodes 🧐
The cupcake you mistaked for amok knao looks like "nom akao thnaot" which is a palm-flavored steamed rice cake.
Amazing! Thanks so much mate- it’s so helpful to know this 😄 hope you enjoyed this video. We are eating so well in Cambodia! Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Sheena

Yes! Or you realise and have that a ha! moment a few months or years later as your palate and knowledge expands with time 😆😍
The cake that you got is not jackfruit cake. It’s is palm fruit cake with coconut milk. It’s my favorite snack.
Thanks so much for that info mate 😄 it was tasty- should have had a coffee with it- would have made a great snack! Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed this video and like the rest of our Cambodia series. Cheers, Sheena

3:00 I must say, that has got to be the best school food in existence!
What are the poor kids in the US eating in their schools? ☹
Too right, I’d definitely be happy with those stalls as my canteen 🙌 thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed this video! Cheers, Sheena

Keep it up!

We are mate! Great to see a fellow Kiwi in the comments. Hahah our Khmer is very poor but all the locals were so helpful and generous about helping us learn a few words. We love Cambodia so much. Do you travel to Cambodia much? Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoy the rest of our Cambodia series. Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate Ive been to Cambodia about 30 times in my life, since I was 6 years old I traveled around most of South East Asia and parts of America but I have some family in Cambodia, there's so much freedom in Cambodia since laws aren't as strict as NZ
Charny Sam and it’s a lot more affordable to travel in compared to NZ 😝
Pork, fried egg with a perfect yolk and rice
I'm loving that plate already even before trying it

I loved the cut fruits..so cool and cheap..lol I think it's a good country to retire, it seems money could go a long way there. Are there lots of expats there?
There are a few Phoenix Legion! Especially in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. You definitely get a lot for your money. The food is especially great value. We adored our time in Cambodia. The people are so warm and friendly. Thanks for watching and commenting on this one. Cheers, Sheena

I'd go back to school for a breakfast like that!
Too right! Talk about the best thing to have for school lunch. Better than the peanut butter sandwiches I used to have 😂 thanks for watching! Cheers, Thomas 😀
Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were my lunch time standard! I've had my fill of them! I want what they were having!...Lol!
