    Wow...been tying chironomids lately and this is the most realistic yet simple tie I've found so far on TH-cam. Especially like the wing casing touch.

    White thread and a few markers seems much easier.

    All that material, no list, no hook size, no bead size. Downright amateurish.

    Going to spin up a few tomorrow =) Just learned about sally hansen's when I somehow developed a bad allergic reaction to bone dry. How do you keep the sally hansen's thin though? gets really thick and goopy quite quickly.

    Thanks for resting and sharing this video! I’ve used Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nails for a couple of decades - great stuff for finishing a chironomid!

    Very nice! Tied a few of these tonight, but will have to wait for this crazy cold snap before throwing them. BTW, what kind of UV torch are you using? Thanks a bunch from chilly Alberta!

      Thanks, I had Trout Waters in Kelowna send it to me, it's the size and shape of a large felt pen and takes a couple AA batteries. Didn't cost much and works wonderfully but doesn't say a brand on it other than Laserpointer on the shirt clip. I think it cost around 20-25$

    • @KamloopsTrout
      @KamloopsTrout  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, not one of our most productive chironomid pupa patterns, but definitely had it's moments and caught some nice fish on them! Best fished when the trout are feeding on staging pupa that haven't gassed up yet! Thanks for watching, Cheers!

      @@KamloopsTrout Very interesting looking fly. Only trouble is, it looks like a hatching midge, but with the bead it's going to sink like a stone. A version that fishes close to the surface might be more effective. Not that I'm the expert.

  • @sonsoffishes1
    @sonsoffishes1 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have to say, I tied some of these in January and then throat sampled these exact mids at 2 different lakes this May. I was so freaking happy to have these in my box...they absolutely slayed. Thanks for this video. 👍

    Do you think with all the thousands of chironomid species present in lakes that trout are that selective about color?With different species hatching at the same time with color/size variations within each midge order, and thousands of emerging insects it would be difficult for a trout to be selective. At some point I think all chironimids have gas between exoskeleton and body that aids emergency-that is why I use a chromey or gun metal exclusively. Such carefull attention to color seems more to satisfy the artistry of the flytier and not the "selectivity" of the trout.

      I started a lengthy response to your comment that grew into the start of a series for the webpage. I hope you find it an interesting read. Thanks for your comment www.kamloopstrout.net/post/chironomids-101-match-the-hatch-choosing-the-right-chironomid-pupa-imitation

    • @sonsoffishes1
      @sonsoffishes1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are absolutely that selective, I throat sampled these exact mids this year in May and I was out fishing everybody. Then I gave one to my brother and he started out fishing everybody too. This has happened so many times over the years, I've lost count. Match the hatch and you will see the difference between catching 10-20 a day and 40-50 a day. Sometimes the fish will key in on certain attractor patterns or you'll throw on a Chromie with black rib when black and red are hatching and it will still do awesome. But after 25 years, I can safely say, matching the hatch will generally produce better fishing days. Tight lines!
