    I am the owner of this no 55. Holding the plane in my hand I can say without hesitation that Gordon is the best! Repair looks -if you can see it- great. Thank you for all the attention to detail and this video too

    As always I love your methodology and attention to detail. One of your videos I heard Skynyrd . Any woodworker who enjoys great music has got all he ever needs in life.

      Thanks for taking time to write and a I appreciate the complements. I LOVE to have tunes on in the shop and several of my videos have been tagged for having copyright violations due to specific songs in the background…. I just don’t learn.

    Amazing job. I really love your Woodworking vise. Thank you for being a kings man and putting the tote back together again. I know I learned something new.

    Absolutely incredibly skillful work! I’m thrilled, and also amazed, that you were able to save the existing wood instead of making an all-new handle. Superb craftsmanship!

      Thank you for the kind words and you know me, I love a good challenge. This was frustrating at times and such a great sense of accomplishment in the end. Hopefully it goes to show, you can do it if you apply yourself.

    Hello! I enjoy watching your channel. I used your videos and repaired several rear handles on hand planes (Stanley, Record and others). Thank you for your lessons! ...Made in the USSR.

    I like the tilting vise nodding in the background at 3:45.
    Nice repair btw.

      Hahaha! Thanks for watching. I should expect people to be scouring the background for “what else does he have going on there” 😁

    You had me talking to the video Gordon, “drill a hole in the wood block that clears the bolt head and smack the crap out of the bolt end with a soft face tool 🤣

    • @gordonaddison307
      @gordonaddison307  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I like that idea too!!! I definitely needed some shop friends on that disassembly. I must have cut about 30 mins out of that video. 🤣

      I find it to be quite a challenge to talk while giving a demonstration because half my mind’s focus is towards communicating coherently and the other half trying desperately not to remove my fingers or the next step while on the fly. Well done, its like trying to juggle two monkeys fighting over a banana 😅

    Another fascinating lesson! To further straighten the end of the rod, have you tried putting a nut on it and holding the nut in a vise as you bend the rod? I've done that in the past, and it works well.

      Excellent idea and I really didn’t feel like checking threads and trying figure out pitch. But yessir, you’re spot on with your advice. Thanks for watching!

    Simple Question. Where do you draw the line on repair vs replacement. I would have just replaced the wood tote with something of the same wood species. Or something exotic like a beech crotch or burl. Not sure what your customer is really hoping to get back. Is this a wall hanger or user? But this repair looks fantastic. Any of my totes that have had chips, cracks, breaks. I have been able to replace them with wood from a doner. So i have a dozen of totes and knob in a box. None of them were rare like this one.

    • @gordonaddison307
      @gordonaddison307  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! I suggested a new one. If it were mine, I *may* have kept the remnants and distressed a new tote. The owner wanted the original, and I would say he’s a collector. This is definitely not a user-grade plane. All said, there must be some points earned by saying “original tote w/ repairs” over “replacement tote”.
      As you can tell by my edited video, I struggled to identify the wood. We believe the front knob is apple. And I do have apple wood on hand now maybe there will be another MPC plane on the bench soon. Thank you for the comment and thanks for watching! 👍

    On scarce and odd planes like that, do you save an outline where you can do one from scratch if needed?

    • @gordonaddison307
      @gordonaddison307  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do. For this one I would have preferred to just make a new one. The owner really wanted to save the original parts, so that’s what I did. Having a profile on hand is smart. Thanks for watching!

    Hello, I am looking for a competent tool restorer to make a rosewood tote for a Birdsill Holly patented jointer. Any information you could render on such a person would be much appreciated. Thank you, Lou

      @@FlLou Hi Lou. Thanks for watching and I appreciate you taking time to write. I do craft vintage totes and have posted pics along the way, but I will also say that it would be 4 months before I could get to it. I’m reaaaaaaallly slow and I have a significant backlog at the moment. Send an email to lovesa45@gmail and I can provide a couple names.

    21:45 to 24:30 what on Earth? 😳 I would think it better to let time do that work. EDIT: read in the comments that the plane is not a user, so you were absolutely right to distress the tote (because time won’t do that unless it is used)
