      @@intothevoid5074 Yeah, It must have been in the early eighties when I took my one and only IL62 Flight on LOT. I worked for British Airways and went LOT for the great experience. Remember it well.

    This aircraft reminds me of a Soviet very old version of a CRJ or MD-82 where they doubled the engines, expanded the cabin as well as it's range and made it hella loud!

      Its not myth but I get what you're saying. Soviet engineering was amazing given the lack of resources. But the culture around safety was problematic in Russia. The Soviet government would hide crashes rather than investigate faults, which is what made these planes somewhat unsafe. There's a lack of history when these were more common, and we'll never know why certain Soviet crashes occurred since the information was covered up (this goes for all Soviet planes). Sure, if maintained these will likely keep going. But all planes have fatal flaws. The only reason Boeings are so safe is because these flaws get publically recognized and subsequently fixed.

      idk about well maintained...those engines look way overdue for a paint job. Lack of paint = increased corrosion = higher likelihood of future metal fatigue. With these birds as old as they are, that's highly problematic.

    This airplane was actually quite impressive. It has an incredible range for a plane from 1960! Over 5,000 miles with 200 passengers (give or take). It was, when first introduced, the largest jet airliner ever. The engines were a bit weak for such a large plane though... 107.9 kN (as compared to about 250 kN on most jets of the same size nowadays).

    Find it interesting at Old Soviet turbine engines have such a high pitched sound compared to American jets from the same time period. The Boeing 727 roars where as the IL-62 shrieks.

    ...Spotted on the tarmac at 2:06...the prime number 251. Two arrangements of its digits form perfect powers: 125 (5 x 5 x 5) and 512 (2 to the 9th power) ! A third arrangement is difference of 6 cubed and 1 cubed (215).

    One of the most reliable Soviet airplanes! It is a pity at us in Russia such don't fly any more, it is a pity ! Europe and the USA told us that our airplanes bad and our governors fools replaced them all with Boeings and Airbuses ! So that I envy you the Korean airlines ! :о)

      ***** Early versions of the IL-62 did have reliability issues with engines, but many issues were solved in the IL-62M. Between 1989 and 2009, no fatalities occurred despite the highest number of examples in service. The IL-62 also has a lower hull loss rate than either the Boeing 707 or the DC8. The airframe is also very strong, designed to survive an emergency landing with the gear up. The tradeoff of course is more weight. The IL-62M also has a 50-year service life rating, quieter and more reliable Soloviev D30-KU turbofans, and was regarded as a very comfortable aircraft, especially during turbulence, and well liked by pilots.

      The Ilyushin IL-62 was one of the most rugged planes built by the Soviet Union, comparable to the Douglas DC-9. Russian aircraft in general are primitive but built well. If we look at hull loss rate, both the DC-8 and the Boeing 707 are more dangerous than the IL-62M.

      nigahiga6400 - but if you compare fatalities per hull-loss accidents, or fatalities divided by number of aircraft produced you find that an accident with a IL-62 is more likely to end in fatalities than either the 707 or the DC-10.

      Careful what you wish for. That thing had a lot of crashes back in its early days. Now It's probably upgraded, and therefore a lot safer,but I still wouldn't want to fly on this plane.

      @@zygi22 The reason for those crashes was the lack of respect for safety in the USSR and how they covered up the causes of plane crashes. With the USSR dissolved, it's probably much more safer.

    What a beautiful sound. From 4:55 on it sounds a bit like engines 2 and 3 spool up first, then by about 5:07, 1 and 4 spool up?? Just my ears or is that right? The amount of times i listen to this fantastic vid has to be illegal....

    Just modify the engine location of each pair.place one from each pair above and behind the other two just below the drag so that the engines form an inclined upper half of hexagon ; the pair near the drag forming the upper two points of the inclined hexagon.

    Wait ,Wait , I'm on the wrong plane !!!! That Cessna is the plane I'm supposed to be on HELLO !!!! OMG where these bargain seats , listen to that spool up whine !!! 20 min of that is enough to go insane let alone hours ... Its best to listen to this with good head phones and volume cranked up to get the true headache effect !!!!!

      Alexander, the il62 is safer than the 737, 747, 727 and pretty much the whole boeing fleet. Just because its soviet doesn't mean it ain't safe

    Two of the most tragic accidents in Polish airlines history involved IL-62. I would never board that plane.

    ah yes, the good old ИЛ-62 ... remember having to take that plane on Moscow-Istanbul flights in mid-90s. engines were loud as shit, but even the engines couldnt cover the rattling sound inside the cabin ) but it wasnt much worse than Tu-134 / Tu-154. ugh

    Looking very similar to the original tail-mounted four-engined VC10, the IL-62 concept was drawn up in 1960, a few years after the design of the VC10 was agreed upon. The first VC10 flew in early 1962, and the first IL-62 in 1963. The engine noise on the IL-62 is very loud when compared to the VC10, which had a very pleasing engine idle note when taxiing.
    I have heard many times that the IL-62 design was a logical step and had nothing to do with stolen designs, but then again so was the design of the TU-144 ('Concordski') and the Buran (space shuttle).

    Air Koryo of North Korea can land any Russian Built Aircraft like the Ilyushin 62M as seen to any Airports Including Singapore.
    Singapore Changi Airport Terminals Can handle these Aircraft.
