- In 1977, 11,000 Israelis lived in settlements in occupied territories.
Today more than 700,000 settlers - 10 percent of Israel’s 7 million Jewish population - now live in 150 illegal settlements and 128 outposts dotting the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Activists and legal specialists have argued that settlements are a major obstacle to the peace process, fragmenting the occupied West Bank and causing profound hardship in Palestinian life.

Rhodesia became Zimbabwe, Palestine became Israel. The "Palestinian people" are in this comparison a group of people in Zimbabwe who decide to call themselves the Rhodesian people , declare independence, and claim the entire country because on the map it said Rhodesia before Zimbabwe existed.

the problem is not that people are building housing, the problem is LAND THEFT. it's not "building settlements", or "settlement expansion", it is LAND THEFT.
"settlements" are by definition all residential communities housing more than one family (homesteads), from the smallest villages all the way up to the biggest cities. almost all humans live in settlements and prefer it that way. given that most people today suffer from housing shortages where they want to live, "settlement construction" is a VERY POSITIVE TERM. the issue is not the construction, it is not the settlements, it is the LAND THEFT!

Remember the West Bank as it’s called was not Palestinian prior to to the 1948 war . It was illegally occupied by Jordan. The number of Jews living in “settlements” is skewed by those living in Jerusalem and its suburbs. There’s a case to be made that some of the outposts are illegal it violent activities from either side is a true obstacle to peace.
