  • How to fix a car door that won't close properly because it is out of alignment (sagging). If you notice the latch on your car door is not lined up with the latch on the body, then this video is for you. Usually the latch is too low due to the door sagging either from age, being leaned on, or from poor quality body shop repairs.

    Just did this on my 240z driver's door. loosened the hinge bolts on the door and put a floor jack under the door. Raised the floor jack enough that I could see the car lift slightly. While jacked up I tightened all of the hinge bolts and released the jack. Now the door is square in the opening with a perfect gap between the door and the rear fender.

    On my 3rd Gen Prelude my driver door was sagging BAD when I got it.
    When I found a junkyard Prelude the driver's door was just as bad if not worse. So what I did was just take the hinges from the passenger side flipped upside down. Made it like BRAND NEW.

    I found that most, not all doors sag because people use them as leverage getting in and out. Or constantly lean on the door or bend the door on sidewalks. Anyway, the frame is bent. So I used to just bend the door back in position as you did, carefully. It really takes little to get it back in position because door hinges mounting areas are not that robust as the older vehicles. All this assumes the hinges are not worn out.

  • @bdphotog6785
    @bdphotog6785 ปีที่แล้ว

    I did this on my 2013 VW Passat S- I careful not to jack it up too high, and although it improved the door closing, it's still not perfect...We'll see if it keeps the rain out now...What I will say is the bolts holding the hinges on are not really meant to be used with a wrench...I found out after rounding one slightly...It's tough to figure out just what driver bit to use, as M8 Triple Tap seems to fit, but I've heard other sizes mentioned...Regardless, thanks for the video!

    Did you replace the whole door when you broke the bolt ?

    • @AcuraAdvice
      @AcuraAdvice  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I left it, the other 2 bolts held the door ok for the time being and it wasn't a car I was planning on keeping so I didn't feel like taking the whole door off and either replacing it or trying to drill it out. Obviously that's not ideal so I learned the hard way to be more careful next time. It was a noob mistake lol.

    • @Delta.Garage
      @Delta.Garage 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cowboyzx420x7 that means your door "hangers" are bad. They have rubber parts on them that go bad. Crown vics have this issue really badly. My 96 aero vic basically had to be shoulder bumped to get out of everyday. If you open your door all the way, and look into where the door attaches to your vehicle, (like as if you were sitting in the car and the doors open look in between the door and the car where there should be an opening) you'll see there's 2. one on the top and another on the bottom. then there should be wire loom or something in the middle that just looks like bendy rubber. Those 2 things are the hangers. Top and bottom mounts. Need replaced.

    I tried this and nothing happened. It’s exactly the same. There are some things that aren’t clear in this video though. I’m assuming the brackets bent. That’s why the door is sagging but the bracket is flush. With that being said, I’m assuming I should be jacking it up past the point of the door fitting perfectly to, essentially, bend it in the opposite direction to get it back to where it was…. Correct? Cause if not, it’s not really doing anything. You’re just unscrewing an rescrewing the brackets in. I could be wrong though, that’s why I’m on TH-cam lol. You stated in the video to jack it up to where it will close like it’s supposed to but, I don’t really understand how that’s fix it and I just tried it lmao. I figured I’d try it anyways just to see

      this is a good solution for an old car you don't want to spend money on and some cars but I won't go into detail. Basically the door is sagging typically because the hinge pin bushings are worn, they wear from open and closing the door. You should replace these hinge pins and bushings which are a pain or go the easy route and the best way imo and buy a new upper hinge. I replaced my driver's side hinge on my Accord for $28 on Amazon. Basically support the door with the jack method, and simply replace the hinge. It's 2 bolts on the chassis and 2 on the door. Very simple. Just make sure the door doesn't move when the hinge is unbolted and don't put much pressure on the door with the jack, just raise the jack up enough to support the door so the door doesn't drop or raise any once you unbolt the hinge. The door and fender can be damaged big time if the door falls or is out of adjustment by very much so it's important to keep the door in the same position while changing the upper hinge. Once you have the hinge replaced you can then adjust the door upwards oh so slightly if you need to. To test whether you need a new hinge, open the door and lift on the rear. If the door has slop in it, then that's the slack caused by the old worn out hinge pin bushings. It's an easy job, but good to have a friend help to hold the door in place when on the jack as with that upper hinge unbolted, the door can fall in or out in a major way

      The reason this won't always work is cuz the Teflon shims at the door pins are worn and need replacing. The method above compensates for wear but not extreme wear. That's why it didn't work for you.

    • @bobsoft
      @bobsoft ปีที่แล้ว

      If your vehicle is a Chev/GM then you have worn out door hinge pins. Open the door half way and grab the end of the door and see if it lifts up. Tell tale sign of worn hinge pins. Those are always fun to replace, lol.
