    Ooh Audrey, your first white blouse (paired with white pants) is an absolute dream!!!
    Is there any chance you could link it, please? 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
    Also, in the spirit of extreme irony, thank you for the timely reminder that what works for one person may not make sense for another. It can be so hard to take a step back when the “need” to acquire a new piece takes hold, but I’m making a concerted effort to do so in 2023, spurred on by your content.

    I've noticed many influencers are rethinking their wardrobes after years of culling their closets (to the basics). It is really refreshing. "Basics" should be personal and individualistic.

    • @irairod5160
      @irairod5160 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      I agree! What is "basic" to one person is not the same as what's "basic" to another. I love bright colors and unusual prints, yet in my quest to make my wardrobe look timeless, I removed much-adored pieces from my collection. I'm glad I kept some favorite pieces stashed away because I've been able to bring them back upon realizing they are foundational pieces to me. Those happy colors and strange prints "lift" my neutrals and are a true expression of my personality.

      when the term was starting to take off it could mean just pairing down your closet to only having a weeks 7 days worth of clothes. Then with the rise of the auster minimalism along with the capsule wardrobe it started to be paired with monochromatic or boring neutral colors in clothes. Pair down to a week's worth or 30 items of clothes of your favorite colors patters etc just make sure they pair well together

    I agree w the recommendation to put things aside for 6-12 months b4 donating-sometimes we don’t wear something coz it doesn’t fit & we still love it, but after we lose weight we could wear it again. I had an adorable brown suede skirt I bought years ago that would still be fashionable today, but I think I donated it too soon & now wish I had it. Use an “on hold” bin in garage for this purpose & revisit it in 6-12 months.

    "Living in anticipatory regret" is such an elegant and accurate way of describing it. Powerful messages in this video Audrey, well said and a great way to motivate me to stick with my goals through what is already a challenging year! 🖤
    Edit because I forgot lol: I'd love a video covering how to shop for shoes! So how you make sure they're good quality, and if there are any tips or tricks you have for predicting if they'll be comfortable after a few hours or a long walk.
    This is such a (literal) pain point for me, my only comfortable pairs of shoes are either white walking trainers, or leather boots that I've unfortunately grown out of. I'm terrified of buying new shoes as I have quite sensitive feet and only realise if shoes are comfy when it's too late to return them!! 😳

    I have sensitive skin, and I had to come to terms with the fact that wool and even cashmere just do not work for me. I wanted to like them for so long, because they're great, high-quality natural fibers that work well in winter. I had multiple of these sweaters and just...never...wore them. Now, I wear chunky cotton knits, which work for my style while still keeping me sufficiently warm. I've also gotten rid of all my heels, with the exception of a chunky heeled ankle boot, since flat shoes feel better and are healthier for my feet and ankles.

    I’d also suggest getting rid of colours you feel just really blah in. I look terrible and sickly in light yellow and lemon hues as well as true coral, because they look awful with my light blonde hair and skin tone. However, I feel just fine wearing bright deep gold yellows, bright orange and peachy toned pinks. It doesn’t mean you can’t wear a particular colour at all, oftentimes one just has to find the right hue or shade. Great vlog Audrey.

    My favorite thing to do is re-dye faded cottons. I recently had a lovely cotton rubbed black turtleneck on its last legs, fading into a sun burnt black almost, and then redyed it black. I’m so happy with it, it’s totally revived the piece to its original color. The fabric has held up and looks crisp, just the color was fading. I’m glad clothing dye exists on the market TBH it’s really saved a lot of my clothes many times.

I have a few totally reasonable, classic pieces but I bought them more because I thought I should - after watching loads of "essential wardrobe pieces" videos, e.g., the world's most boring navy, v-neck pullover. There's absolutely nothing wrong with them, but they don't spark much joy and I'm seeing now that I could have held out for more pieces with a tad more interest. ~I noticed in the frames of you wearing the Paris t-shirt that you look very pretty in that makeup.
    ~I think I feel more settled watching you speak when the French door behind you is shut all the way.
    ~I noticed first in the white pants, and then in the blue jeans when you’re speaking, that you left the belt loops unfilled. Somehow this didn’t sit right with me; I know that fashions come & go, but this old lady (I) now remembers my mother saying that if a garment has belt loops, it needs a belt. I disregarded that until now, when I see what she must have seen. I know, too, that one may be striving for the one long line, thinking, therefore, that a belt undermines that attempt. Nevertheless, the sight of empty loops now looks undone, to me. I thought perhaps a gold chain belt might work for the white outfit. And of course a black leather belt for the blue jeans w/black top.
    Ah, well, just one of those style or fashion things, I suppose. After all, I used to wear holes in my jeans… not something I prefer now…

    I like your tip about hand washing clothes. I find with my cashmere outer layer, I can get away with only having them cleaned once or twice a year. Plus my dry cleaner does a great job de-pilling the sweater. That always makes them look fresh. fresh.

    One person's basic is another's dressy occasion wear. Not regretting buying something does not equal it being not fun and monotonous. You hit it on the head when you said "not something anyone anywhere could copy". That's the key. Hint, unscented baby shampoo is great for washing delicates. Just don't use too much.

    If you find loving something in your closet after 20 or 30 years it is most likely because it was really well made but also unique, not because of was “basic”. I’m glad that more people are starting to realise this and searching for quality in design as well as manufacturing.

    Good advice. Especially the point about clothes that are painful, or at least uncomfortable, to wear. At a consignment store I found a fabulous pair of leopard print pumps, my size, from the high-end “red-soles” company. They were great - for about 10 minutes. I think I wore them twice before I realized why they’d been consigned. Definitely the most uncomfortable pair of shoes I have ever worn. I hope they work for the next gal who picks them up at the charity shop.

    Oh these are such good tips and have me thinking I need to go thru another closet culling! I sometimes find myself in a corporate setting and need to wear suits. I have a couple of blouses that I don’t really like but because of their color and utility, I have kept them. But I NEVER reach for them! It’s time they go in the giveaway bag and hopefully make someone else happy. Thanks for always having such well thought out ideas!

      I also don’t always want to let go of accessories, even those I rarely use but just like. For me, it has been more satisfying taking those items to a consignment store and, assuming they sell, at least getting something in return for them.

    • @rebecca_stone
      @rebecca_stone ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've got to say...the only items I ever regret decluttering (or losing to humidity in our subtropical climate) are my cool leather belts, clutches and gloves. It's also getting harder to purchase quality silk and finely-spun or woven wool, too - my advice is to hold on to these items. They're gems, as you say - so technically don't count as "clutter" ;-)

    I just wanted to add on to clothing care; If you are like me and hate hand washing sweaters, there are counter top options for washer machines that you can use for delicate garments like sweaters and silks. I haven’t personally used them as I’m low on funds, but I know that is a middle version between hand washing and delicate machine washing.
