The advice given by many youtubers and bloggers is to get rid of anything that you haven't worn in a year, but when you reach a certain age, you realize that a year is nothing. It's the blink of an eye. I don't get rid of anything unless it's hopelessly out of style by several years, or too worn to be presentable.

    • @melocoton7
      @melocoton7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

A year is definitely not long enough. I like to declutter into storage boxes. Trends and tastes flow with time. It’s fun to shop your boxes every couple of years.

UGH YES. Hearing this all the time during the pandemic and it sounded ridiculous. I knew I'll be going back to working at an office eventually, so getting rid of my work clothes wouldn't be wise. It's important to know what works for you before taking other people's advice.

Totally agree. I have some thrift store leather jackets, waiting for me to lose a few pounds. They are more neutral styles and not trendy or dated for their age, so I can add them in again and again. I got the. Separately but carefully considered them for their style fit and color to match most of my wardrobe. They cost me very little, like $25 or less. I could never replace them for that. If I want trendy, I can go to Walmart for a sweater etc. I like quality on a budget. So I look at the sewing, fabric content, details. If it’s not good quality fabric (like a random purchase that suited a particular season or I needed for an outfit, it goes. In my 60s now, so I’m not changing my style or falling for *hot trends* as much these days. I did the same with denim jackets. I have about 8 of them, also different cuts, colors, and moods. I have space in my closet and will wear them once or twice a year each (except for the more snug ones). Same for my scarves too.

This! I went through a very very very brief stage where I only wanted to dress like a 1950s housewife. It did not take me a full year before I was like who is that in the mirror? She's cute but that's not me. And if I had gotten rid of the things I wore before my phase, well, I'd be so angry at myself rn.

Appreciate these tips! I've decluttered pieces I believed I'd never reach for again, and maybe a year later, I'd think, "wish I still had that sweater..." Instead of decluttering pieces I know I might want again, I store them in bins in my basement. I call this Clothing Purgatory ;) and it works so well.

The best question I ask myself when editing my wardrobe is, "Ok. I don't wear this right now. But if I ever want to wear a (blue blazer/ballet shoe/messenger bag/etc) again, is this the version I would want?" If the piece was never right to begin with, I let it move along. But if it's a great version of that item, I stick it in storage and don't worry.

Before I made my rule to not let go of anything unless it was chafing or literally squeezing the life out of me, this was my thought process too, like "I don't wear this denim shirt, but if I was to go looking in the future I'd want this one exactly and no way I want to go through the hassle of finding the perfect denim shirt again"

Awesome video. Everyone talks minimalism & the power of purging so much that it can create more consumerism bc you feel pressured to let go of things you haven’t worn in a year….then you’re trying to go find something like it later. I love keeping quality loved items to cycle back in for later on.

And if you love a belt and it doesn't fit you, get yourself a belt punch. Way cheaper than replacement and you get more wear and are able to enjoy it.
If you have invested in cold weather gear, like a parka, that you like, fits you and is functional, don't get rid of it; even if you move to a warmer climate. You'll want it for a vacation, visiting friends or family, or that rare cold snap. I've even loaned pieces to family.

I have a very large coat and jacket collection. I had something called frozen shoulder,so painful) and could literally not put my arm into a coat. In a painful moment I decluttered some loved jackets, now regret as I can use my arm again. Never declutter while not feeling well is the lesson.

Omg, am in the first (very painful) stage of adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) and have been pulling and donating denim jackets (and any jacket or top that is rigid or too difficult to climb into) to the charity store. My "capsule wardrobe" (ha) comprises garments with more flexible fabrics, stretch or easy pull on, or front buttoning. A wee voice inside says I may regret it, but just want this painful journey to be over, especially as it follows a wrist fracture in September. Sounds like you've conquered it. That's so heartening to read. Thank you and well done!

Hold off on donating. Just put them aside and use sweaters for now. I could not lift my arm at all. I actually got stuck in something while trying it on and exacerbated the pain by forcing my way out of the garment. It will get better but it takes quite a while. At some point you will be completely free of any pain and have the range of motion again. Be well.

I really appreciate your focus today on the 3Fs: Fit, Functionality and Flattering. I value these far more than the 4th F of Fashion - especially when it is interpreted as following the latest trends. This can have the effect of creating uniform looks rather than celebrating individual heights/colouring/body shapes. If I were obsessed with being "fashionable," I'd be really discouraged these days as the oversized/baggy/cropped silhouettes crowding the racks these past few seasons are spectacularly hideous on me.

He adored my cirves I have a theatrical romamtic body. For years my weight fluctiated about 15 lbs which is why I have so many clothes. Well I am now 125lbs and am struggling to NOT lose more. So my closet had 4 sizes. Of course the two upper sizes I could just look at the label. But the other two I had to try on.
I have curated this wardrobe for almost 20 yrs and none of it is wildly out of style at least to me because I dress for my body and coloring. But I am exhausted today at 75.

I highly appreciate these tips as I'm looking to slightly change my summer/spring wardrobe! There are a couple trend pieces that I've realized I'm tired of wearing... That, plus I'm not someone who likes the head-to-toe, structured corporate style all the time. In place of those items I've decluttered, I'm adding more basics back into my closet that I can wear on an everyday basis, and that are appropriate for the job I currently have in reality.

Great video! Thank you. One thing I've noticed about jeans is that the back pocket styling or stitching can change and makes a jean look dated. In that case I pair them with a tunic length shirt or sweater that covers the pocket. Also I discovered the alcohol spray bottle trick for disinfecting jeans so mine are lasting longer between washes.

I am looking forward to the time I feel like my wardrobe has some older pieces I never want to part with. I got my first pair of Thursday boots based on one of your videos I watched some time ago. I took notes on the video (boot video) and researched every brand you mentioned and went with a beautiful black lug sole combat boot. OMG, such beautiful quality and craftsmanship for the price. My husband order a pair (Captain) with a different sole and I think they get delivered tomorrow. I’m now saving for a Barbour coat. It’s so true when you said some things are hard to find. I have had a time finding a casual but well made black coat. So I will keep you posted once I get my new coat. ❤ Thank you for all of your helpful suggestions 😊

I was thinking about getting rid of some jeans but after watching this I'm reconsidering. I don't love the fit right now but my size will change. Their also wide led so their too cold for winter but when it gets warmer they might be a lot more comfortable. If I find other pants/jeans I like more I'll declutter them but I'm also not in the financial position to buy much clothing right now. Thanks for the good advice and grounded perspective! I think we can go overboard with decluttering these days so this was very important to hear.

There are definitely certain items that I am very slow to declutter. I have the hardest time getting rid of shoes. I generally only get rid of the ones that are in horrible shape or are terribly uncomfortable. I’m slow to get rid of blazers and coats and well fitting slacks that are wool or silk or excellent quality. Cocktail dresses and formal wear I’m also slow to throw out or at least the dresses that are expensive and well made. I’ll also add that you might be slow to get rid of purses and handbags that are excellent quality. The style may change, but vintage is always in style. You don’t always have to have the bag that everyone else is carrying. Pulling out that vintage purse can make you stand out!

I have good quality leather boots and flats (I don't wear heels) from more than 20 years ago. I kept them because I couldn't bear to part with things that were so nice, well made, and fit me comfortably, but I didn't wear them for about 15+ years because they all had square toes. And now - ta da! Square toes are back again, and I have a lovely wardrobe of shoes/boots for the cost of getting the leather refurbished or just shined up.

I agree with all, but have struggled the most with jeans, given how much the styles have changed over the last 20 years. When a style comes back, it doesn't come back exactly the same - while I'm happy to see straight leg jeans return, the last time I was wearing them they were low rise and now they're high waisted.

@@gen_o Agreed x10000000. I've been defiantly wearing mid-rise jeans as the high-rise ones don't flatter my short torso. I'm also avoiding oversized blazers, all-cropped-pants-all-the-time and brick-sized shoes. @@cynthiajohnston424 haha, for sure! I definitely don't tuck tops into the one pair of high-rise jeans I bought by accident online (the in store model was mid-rise but when I saw them on super-sale online several months later, the store had tweaked the design to high-rise and a baggier leg alas, and I didn't re-check the product description, d'oh!). It's summer here in Australia, getting really humid, and I'm so glad I didn't throw out the three or four sleeveless shirts that I've had for a while ... they are fine really, I was just wanting to minimise the number of items in my wardrobe, but they're so great for my early morning walk ... the newer, more exiting sleeveless tops I'm saving for when I'm socialising ... it's also important to keep comfortable older clothes for painting, gardening etc if you're a creative person ...
