I’ve been playing for 1 1/2 years now, and have 9 ukuleles! Different sizes, low G, high G, different shapes, woods, body depths. Love them all! But I am starting to have preferences for certain ones for certain songs and discovering how different strings change the instrument. Love the adventure there!

I bought each of them a Makala dolphin-suitably indestructible,yet perfectly playable and intonation is great all the way up the 12 fret fingerboard! The kids like the wild colors, too! I kind of wonder how the shape affects how it feels to hold it. If there would be a reason for preferences in shape. With the cutaway shape, I don’t know if I will ever play that far up the fretboard, so maybe I don’t ever need one of those? Along the lines of playing technique, I now notice that you are doing the picking pattern over the sound hole. I guess I thought I was supposed to be playing everything in the “sweet spot” way up the fretboard. Revelation! That is hard to do sometimes.
I have a Makai tenor (MT-70TR) that looks very similar to the Ohana slimline model that she showed. I wasn't specifically shopping for a "travel" model, but I liked how it sounded and how it felt to hold when I had the chance to try it in a shop.
Bernadette, I love your videos, and your approach, and your vibe! You helped me get started in the ukulele world, and I'm grateful for your input. There are just a couple of observations I'd like to add, as a life-long musician (mostly clarinet, plus some guitar and keyboards). First, thanks to the price point of most ukuleles in the marketplace, the decision you make regarding which one to get doesn't have to be a nerve-wracking one. To anyone considering it: do it. Pick one of the ones that are highlighted here, or go to a local shop if possible and try two or three in your price range and see what you like. If you can't do that and are shopping online, don't just buy for price or appearance. Watch at least 10 videos from various people, learn the brands, learn the differences in woods, laminates, HPL, etc, and develop an appreciation for the range of possibilities so you can be an "informed consumer." Second, you'll soon learn that many (I don't know if it's "most," but it's certainly "many!") people who have a ukulele have more than one ukulele! It just seems to go with the territory. I look at it as, say, a pen, or a paintbrush, if you're into writing or drawing or painting. A ukulele is not dirt-cheap, but for what you can do with it, and the pleasure that can be derived from it, there are few instruments that rival its bang for the buck. If you get one that you don't like, it's not the end of the world. Someone else may appreciate it as a starting instrument, were you to either sell it or gift it to someone. Or keep it. Get another one! Finally (for this comment at least!), don't overlook the used instrument market. Just as you may not be happy with your first choice, or you may simply have acquired a few more than you need, so too have other people done the same. There are always used ukuleles on the market, and whether you're looking for a classic vintage Martin, say, or simply a decent Ohana or Oscar Schmidt (as my first one was) that might otherwise be above your price range, you can find them at a price range that might make the unaffordable affordable. Oh, of course I'm not done yet... What I want to add is: don't be afraid of making "mistakes." Although it's hard to say that spending a hundred bucks on learning a lot of stuff is a mistake, you know what I mean. In my case, with the OU-5 that I bought used (and really barely used), I've learned an awful lot. A lot of it is what to look out for in the next instrument. Do I really want a glossy finish? It may look nice, but is it good for the sound? And does it matter if the fret ends are really smooth? Well, if you're coming away from a practice session with a thousand tiny scratches on your strumming fingers, you realize that yes, it is important! Stuff like that. So... bottom line, Do it. Get an instrument. Practice. Get frustrated that your hand doesn't work that way, and find a way to make it work! It's a challenge and a very rewarding one, but like anything you have to stick with it long enough to derive the fruits from your labor. Soon enough, you (and others) will be surprised that you (you!) are making the music you're making, all by your little old self, all with that little 4-string wooden thing. It's a nice feeling.
Thanks for a great video. I joined a ukulele class and borrowed a soprano ukulele from a friend. This person is a professional guitarist/singer so this ukulele has a good sound and is good quality but he couldn’t remember how much he paid for it. I went to the shop and looked at various ukuleles. I want to ask how much do I have to spend on a ukulele? I can’t afford a $300 ukulele. The teacher says to get one that’s at least $300. My girlfriend also wants to join the class but doesn’t own a ukulele so she came to the shop with me. The shop staff showed us various ukuleles and gave us a lot of advice. I saw a Martin soprano ukulele that I liked. I think it was about ($100). Is that too cheap? Thanks for great advice.
Lekato, an established maker of inexpensive accessories, like wireless intrument connectors, neck straps, guitar wall hangers, has a $70 ukulele that I'm starting with. Look into it. I'm very pleased with their instrument. Most of all it's very playable, not a compromise to learn with. It's not a high end instrument but it tunes and sounds really nice. The build quality and components are remarkable for the price. 11:26 (BTW: Unfortunately either the TH-cam audio processing or the DRM security on TH-cam is puttting noise artifacts into the sound when you start strumming. Put headphones on if needed to hear the noise.)

There’s also Baritone. I’m a tenor (high G) player mainly but I use soprano ( standard or original) with a low G but up a step, so really in the key of D instead of C. Great videos.

I just bought my first ukulele I got a enya tenor it comes with a case and a capo I also got a tuner too I have been using a friend’s ukulele for a bit and doing Bernadette’s 30 day challenge
I can't wait to hear the sound demo at the end of the clip - I am curious to hear the differences between the wood (mango, mahogany, acacia etc) and the low G/high G tuning differences. I've been consistently playing concert and dabbling in tenor. My goal is to find that ONE instrument to fall in love with and avoid amassing a huge collection of various makes and models. Anticipated budget, no more than a couple grand (US).

The variety of ukes is astonishing. The Enya will be my second uke, thanks to you because your 30 day challenge helped me to pick my uke after two years!
I think a stand is absolutely essential. It's the best place to put your uke when you're not using it (other than a gig bag or a wall hanger!) The Ohana pineapple was my very first uke. Great instrument.
I just started playing 2weeks now. I got the kala KA C. I went with the concert because of that in the meddle like you said. But also I wanted the concert for the bass. I love doing my own strum patterns with simple chords and I know a few songs so far. M:I theme and I self taught myself the ending and today I figured out how to play Ambitions Az A Ridah I am now focusing on chord changing. So I’m playing you’re my sunshine. It’s safe to say I’m enjoying it that I’ll grab a soprano. I always wanted to play though being left handed and having slight nerve damage to my right hand, I was always nervous to even try. I have the strum & chuck down really well.
My daughter Julia, who you have been teaching for the last year, just freaked out about the way you are holding the ukes in the thumbnail of this video.

I just recently started shopping for a ukulele. There doesn't seem to be many options if you want two strap buttons. 🤔
The brand that most consistently does 2 strap buttons is Enya, in my experience!

You can pick in different parts of the instrument to get a different sound quality. I was going for a more neutral sound for this video 😃

I like’em all! I have a Soprano and a concert. The soprano is much easier to play if your fingers are older and stiff.
