    This has been a fascinating series looking forward to seeing the machine in action.

    Great job Ken . That is one nice boring head , way out of my price range at the moment !!! Cheers .

      Thanks Max. I got a pretty good deal on Ebay for that boring head. I paid about 1/4 of the cost of a new Narex boring head of that size. Some of the boring bar holders still had wax paper and slushing oil on them. It is just like new. The biggest surprise is that it came from Canada. Most of my Ebay finds are from the U.S.. Ken

    Good to see your work.
    Happy new year.
    I have a Wohlhaupter upa3 int30 taper for one mill and a Taiwanese VBHU int40 taper for another..
    They both do the job but I know which is smoooother!
    They don't come out often but you really Know bore and face are perp when you need to.

      I was shocked at how nice they are. I've had a Narex for almost 20 years and I thought it was pretty nice. However, the Wohlhaupter is a cut above. They are exceptionally smooth and easy to set up with the single wrench. Ken

    Some big heavy stuff there. I bet all that welding kept the shop nice and warm.

      You'd think it would have kept the shop warm but it was around -34 C (-30F) that day so the heaters ran and ran. Ken

    Awesome discussion/build, curious thought on the stacked plate design if holes were added when cut, would long pressed in through shear pins (rods) solve the possible delamination along with creating plate alignment for welding, I know nothing, just spitballing as it seems a method to a quicker build???

    • @hmw-ms3tx

      I had thought about using pressed in pins but it was hard to get enough shear area (i.e. pin cross sectional area) to resist the torque. You have to remember that for a given torque, the closer you move toward the centre of the shaft the higher the shear forces are. As you increase the diameter of the pins to get the shear area you need the centre of the pins moves closer to the centre of the shaft and they are subjected to a higher shear force. This requires a larger pin area which then moves the pins closer to the centre where the shear force is higher and the cycle repeats and in my case I could never get enough shear area without making the shaft excessively large. Seems like a good solution but is there a risk of cracks propagating from the four corners that are unwelded?

    • @hmw-ms3tx
      @hmw-ms3tx  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is that possibility. However, we have had good luck making adaptors this way for the same screw anchor motor. Time will tell. Ken
