Went through the same struggles. Pre flight, then talk myself out of flying. Last month, almost talked myself out of a beautiful San Francisco Bay tour with my daughter and two of her friends. It was night and rainy. Was afraid visibility would be bad. Finally decided to stay in the pattern to at least get them up in the air. From pattern altitude, I could see the lights of the city and made the decision to complete the mission. The Golden Gate Bridge, Bay Bridge, and downtown lights were spectacular. Each step of the way I was prepared to shut it down. Each trip is a series of decisions, I pray we all make good ones. I am 58 and have had mutt ppl less than a year. You will make it.
I relate to this in so many ways....I find my panic or fear happens at cruise....I can fly with instructor with zero inputs or stress....but by myself I get in my head like you mention.
@@engrxtn Last weekend he told me he would not fly with me again until I did my cross country alone. Which I did obviously and now I believe I’m over the hump
WAY TO MAN UP! You defeated your demon puss cake! That aircraft is always ready to fly, you're the only asset that would make it change or make it dangerous. So remember, the plane can fly without you. All you have to do is enjoy the ride. With 6722 hrs in the F-15C I've been scared, just never vocalized it or put it on the web. Bravo Zulu my man.
You are doing great! It can be challenging getting past the head games. I'm a new PPL at age 59, with one year under my belt. There is always a new challenge for us newbies. Experience brings confidence. Looks like you have some defined personal minimums which is really smart and safe. It's hard to not complete a mission as planned with external pressures (IMSAFE) but you did 😉😊
I remember when my instructor first took me out in winds about 18knots gusting to 28+ during my PPL training in a 172 when I was learning to land. It was a challenge, but it gave me immense confidence going forward. I don't think I've had a day without winds at least 10 knots, but once they start gusting over 30 knots I stay on the ground. I envy the people who train at airports with light winds. Much easier to learn the basics.
We have crazy winds in Orange County at least 3 to 4 days. I agree with you. I need to be confident to land in windy conditions. I am a low hour student pilot.
Just discovered your podcast which brought me to your TH-cam channel. Didn’t know this was a thing!! Thought it was for the younger ones 😅I’m going to be 50 next year. My son will PPL at 19 while attend college, that kicked my butt to finally go out and get my PPL too!
I'd review the perils of dragging every approach to landing and counting on power to save the bacon. Being low, then dumping flaps will lead to some exciting arrivals in the future. I enjoy your videos and commentary - I'm sure you're all certified by now. All the best.
Good DECISION on not overdoing your X wind limit until you had practiced them.It may be in your head,, but thats where you need to have the confidence.. . Loved the video.. Thanks for sharing
Another midlife pilot here. I’ve tried to talk myself out of flights before. I’ve had similar experiences you’ve had. I can relate. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! I've been steadily working towards PPL with a full-time job, and I wasn't very consistent with my flying. So, 1 year later - 80 hours in, I'm almost there!
My CFI had a great tactic - he wouldn't book a day for any student to do their solo, he would one day just ride along for a few circuits, head out to the taxi way for a runway line up, then literally get out of the aircraft and say "you got this".
Have your instructor take you up on a windy day and do a bunch of take offs and landings. You’d be amazed how much cross wind a Cessna can handle. I took my flight training in a 152 up in the Pacific Northwest and landed in really strong winds. Once you do it and actually realize that you AND the aircraft can handle it you be a hell of a lot more confident. Being solo in an aircraft isn’t the place to continually doubt yourself!
Lol, Listen to Russ, don’t put your inner voice in the video. I’m enjoying your videos, you have some good editing skills. Keep up the great work! 52L is a fine looking aircraft also.
Thanks for doing this, I’m 57 retired and I have about 80 hours from 25 years ago student pilot status only. Looking fwd to returning to finish and take my family up for giggles and $100 hamburgers!
My initial flight training was the structured "shorter hours" Part 141 training, which stated solo duel instruction. So I asked my instructor with about 8 hours of flight time about what that meant? Does that mean you'll be just watching me fly? Like with the headset off? Yeah, I'll still be monitoring everything. So got to the solo dual monitor flight day. Just a bit over 10 hours of flight time... Thinking it meant he was going to just take his headset off or something and let me do it all "Dual solo". We did 3 touch agos together, and he said okay make this one to a full stop, and just head for the temp parking area, thought oh he needs to use the restroom. I got to parking area nearly cut the engine as he took his seat belt off and said, oh don't stop the engine. And he proceeded to get out and said do 3 touch and goes more or less whatever want, remain in the pattern and start up from run up get clearance and all (Class C airport), and I'll be listening to you on the radio. I just smiled dumbly the entire time he walked away. The most surreal thing to find yourself flying an airplane all by your lonesome over decent size city fun airport that a general aviation, joint national guard base with various helicopters navy jets like F18's, harriers, even Ospre, Air Force F15's and A10 Wart Hogs, C130's, and 737 to dash-8's... like a kid with match box set spilled all over their model airport. I recall taxing to the end of the 10K" runway talking to myself, "Why do I get myself into these situations." Just seemed insane. Later, you get experienced and it never becomes dull, but the first time with the uncertainty and just amazement that you, instructor, "they" the government, society in general is letting little ol' me pilot an airplane all by myself. For the first time. Hopefully not the last time LOL!
Love your videos. Your camera shots and editing are fantastic, I'd love to know what editing software you use. Cool airplane as well. Know what you mean about the mental stuff, it happens, but you push thru it. Nice work! By the way, before I went solo xcountry, I spent a lot of solo time in the pattern practicing xwind landings, with more wind each time I went out, and it really helped me. Before you know it, you'll be landing on 1 wheel like a pro!
stick with you gut feelings time is on your side stay alive there is another day, you recognized you where to fast and to high and fixed it and landed perfectly that is how it is done text book work. makes me wont to get back to flying.
When you can't pass medical, and with the ever increasing cost of GA, it basically becomes a moot point. If you have tons of time and money on your hands go for it
@@MidlifePilot If what is depicted as true in the movie "We Are Marshall" that WV and then Coach Bobby Bowden and his staff really did help the Marshall coaches with installing the veer offense, and WV Mountaineers football team really did wear the green crosses on their helmets in tribute to Marshall, then they all most definitely have a place already reserved in heaven. What wonderful acts of human kindness and sacrifice.
Well you really shouldn't be a pilot what happens when your flying and the xwind exceeds the limits and you have a nominal alternate with a Xwind......

i know I am quite off topic but does anyone know of a good site to watch new tv shows online ?
@Melvin Erik I would suggest flixzone. Just google for it =)
@Emery Bryant yea, been watching on flixzone for months myself =)
@Emery Bryant Thank you, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) I really appreciate it!!
@Melvin Erik happy to help :)
The more you get out and fly, the more you will go out and fly...... the more ya do it the more confidence you will have and keep 👍

I didn’t solo because I was afraid to even the CFI and the chief CFI said I was ready after the pre-solo check! Shame on me!

Just did my first solo cross country today... definitely get a confidence boost, but I try to humble myself. Keep pushing guys ✈️🤙🏻
I had the same type of issues and I let it stop me from training altogether. Just now getting back into it. It’s all confidence and head games.

And I plan on buying my own Piper 28 or Cessna 172.
I’m just rusty on this new technology with the glass panels and the IPADs
Great !! you handled it very nicely !
That moment when your instructor has more confidence in you than you do.
Yeah, I definitely struggled with confidence.

My wife’s favorite color orange. I have to show her this. Lol. Awesome video.
Just subscribed!!! Love your first video thx for the extra confidence boost
After watching your recent videos....can you believe you cancelled a cross country flight over 7 knot winds? You’ve come so far!
LOL. Yeah, I feel like I'm learning something new every time, and getting more comfortable. Thanks for watching and being here from the start!
Nice video I'm also a student Pilot hope to do my check ride soon.
I’m betting that 7 knot wind isn’t a problem for you now. 😊

Good stuff mate. Think you might be being a bit harsh on yourself about the approach, you kinda salvaged it again. Good vid.
Thanks, man. Appreciate the feedback. It's just aggravating when you miss the basics. I was ultimately reasonably happy with the landings.
Keep at it my friend! You got this!!!!!
Very thorough. Nice job.
very pretty country
Don't worry about the trepidation. It's not a bad thing
You did great! Not sure why you titled this "Stop Being a Baby!"
Great video, you are really good.
Thanks for the video!
Awesome!
Do you have a crosswind phobia? Fly that airplane bruh. That's the mighty Skyhawk you're flying, not the Chickenhawk!
Love your videos!!!
7 knot crosswind is not much. We have at least 13 most of the time in Orange County
When you can't pass medical, and with the ever increasing cost of GA, it basically becomes a moot point. If you have tons of time and money on your hands go for it
Cstrange how as students we are taught to fly in the pattern but when it comes to towered airports all that goes out the window.
Lots of long straight ins.
Request "closed" lol
Better safe than sorry
Nice
I hope you have your PPL and would like to hear your experiences

Break that habit of reading your cheat sheet on the passenger seat.
!!!

Hey don't get me wrong i have A LOT of hours just saying ....i fly pipers.....
I live in an extremely windy area. 7knot crosswind is a day we dream about
