  • BMC ambassador and pro-climber Steve McClure teams up with Irish legend Ricky Bell for a mission to the wild island of Inis Mór, off the coast of Ireland. The sheer cliffs are famous for their unrelenting sport routes, but can they succeed in their trad-climbing mission?

    The Earth never ceases to amaze me. I had never seen this island and it's so much nice and flat rock until the big jump into the ocean. So nice.

    I went to Inis Mor exploring the rock climbing potential in September 2017. I don't have time to be much of a climber but do have a geography degree from many years ago so maybe I can explain why the place could be so amazing for sport climbing.
    The island is one huge canted slab of Carboniferous limestone about 10 miles long and 2-3 miles wide, with just some grass and a few houses on top. On the eastern (facing Ireland) side the limestone dips smoothly into the sea, but on the western (facing the Atlantic Ocean) side there is a continuous line of cliffs from the top to bottom of the island. At the highest point, near the Dun Aonghasa prehistoric hill fort, the cliffs are about 100m high. On the west coast there's only one place where you can access sea level by foot - at the Serpent's Lair where they did the Red Bull cliff diving. The limestone varies a lot in how fractured it is, which determines how resistant to erosion it is. On the top couple of miles of the west coast coast the rock is very fractured and not very solid and so the cliffs are only vertical. But further down the west coast the rock has far fewer flaws and thus much more structural integrity. The ocean breaks along the bottom of the cliffs and dissolves the limestone (very slowly) by chemical weathering, obviously more at the bottom (more waves and spray) than further up the face. Thus it naturally ends up overhanging. I think the winter storms must also remove loose rock. Where there were natural recesses the waves became more concentrated causing chemical erosion to occur faster, with the result that you end up with the cave like shapes mentioned in the video where the solid rock, 50 metres high, overhangs continuously by 30 degrees. Which to me looked like awesome places for high level sport climbing projecting.

      thanks for the analysis! really sounds like an amazing place to visit, especially as a geologist like yourself! would the cliffs of moher be of a similar composition then as the ones of inis mor that you described? makes me a bit sad that i spent over two years in ireland when i was in school on the east side and actually went to galway for a long weekend trip but wasn't a climber back then and never knew just how beautiful that side of the island really is. but it's never too late to return!

      @@stoli288 Hi the cliffs of Moher are super impressive to look at but I looking at the photos I don't think the rock is very good quality - but I've never been there so who knows. I loved Galway - great city - so much amazing music and Gaelic culture! When I wrote the chunk above I was well tired and it's a bit dry but Inis Mor as a place is just awesome!!! I absolutely loved it there. I don't think I'll ever have the time or talent to climb the hard sport routes but there is loads of easier climbing and loads of overhanging bouldering etc etc

      @PMennard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      wow! thanks! Must be super-interesting going climbing with you. Would love to hear how all those weird formations and features came to be! I think there is seriously a niche - "geology for climbers" - that needs filling with content :)

    • @rushthezeppelin
      @rushthezeppelin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Why is it that the rock out there is so perfectly rectangular with it's fracturing patterns? Never seen limestone with so many right angles like that before.

    • @DrewWithington
      @DrewWithington 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PMennard Thank you. I think geological time is just amazing - how over thousands and tens of thousands of years nature slowly and persistently shapes the rock then a human being comes along and in a few hours find a pattern in the holds and makes a climb and gives it a name.

    This place is impressive. I'm a climber myself and I'm afraid of height (but I feel secure when I'm climbing safely). I have been once to visit the Cliffs of Moher, but I think these are even more impressive! I was so scared to look down, I was laying completely on the ground like a worm, with just my head over the edge. You need to go there and see yourself, I will never forget.
