- Super Mario 64 is a game made by Nintendo that came out on the Nintendo 64. This was the first videogame I ever played and I have so many great memories playing it by myself or with an audience. Recently, an image of an iceberg with layers depicting the depth of Mario 64 theories and knowledge has made its rounds on the Internet. It’s actually pretty surprising at just how deep this all goes.

Someone on another video commented that he remembers as a kid that playing on his own copy "was fine" but "whenever [he] played a friend's copy, something just never felt quite right."
In psychology, this is called "priming" and can be used to even make people change their own memories with enough persuasion. Like convincing someone they say Bugs Bunny at Disney World as a kid, even through Bugs has never been a mascot for Disney and even if the person had never been to Disney World to begin with.
My hypothesis is that people get negative emotions from Wet-Dry World because the water level gimmick brings back repressed memories of the Water Temple.
The Zelda assets in the level only add to this

@Daniel Torres I believe that the 121st star is one that is in the files but has none of the affects or the orientation of an actual star if it was put in the game. but people only saw that there was another star there and assumed it must be a star they hadn't found yet.

36:57 it’s more of a depressive energy.... it’s all mostly brown, and grey colors. You’re surrounded by 4 walls. The skybox looks like a city underwater, ignoring that, it’s a city filtered to look blue, and is also very dull and dark in color.
I imagine it wouldnt be so depressive if the skybox wasn’t edited, or was edited to look like a bright blue sky, and a yellow sun, Instead of being underwater. As well as not being surrounded by 4 walls, and maybe livening the scenery up.... it’s as depressive as a factory. Maybe more flora, or colors in general.

The strange boo laugh that's occasionally heard is actually the same as the usual boo laugh, only slowed down.
Actually, Boo's Laugh and Bowser's Laugh are the same sound, only played at a different speed and pitch.
The laugh is actually a recording of Charles Martinet, and it came from an old sound effects pack.
Intersting, I guess Nintendo have a record or just reusing the same laugh soundtrack for some of their n64 games. Like in ocarina of time, the 4 Poe's laughs are ganons laugh but sped up.
This laugh also Sounds Like that laugh from glover
What's kind of funny to me though, is that not only did Charles Martinet just randomly record laughs for some sound effects company, but he also plays as the main character in a game where they use it to voice the villain, making him technically the credited voice actor for him!

It seems the paintings lead to other parts of the universe. This is shown in Super Mario Galaxy 2 where Whomp’s Fortress reappears as Throwback Galaxy. We know for a fact this is the same location as wall you had to blast away has already been broken, and one of the Bob-Omb Buddies says they recognize Mario.

I wish the game woulda changed up after collecting all 120 stars and getting 100 life's from yoshi. Kinda like first super Mario bros did when you beat it.
A couple things about your test in Wet Dry World.. First, it doesn't look like your testers visited the abandoned town area, which I find to be the eeriest thing about the level by far. If you ever do anything similar, they should definitely visit this part of the level!
Second, I think it's all about context. Sitting with a friend and joking as you play is going to set a certain vibe that inhibits the uneasiness of the stage. Your testers also seemed like they were kinda trying to get a feel for the game again as well, which probably distracts from the actual level. If you're up late at night and playing alone, however, and you've been at it for a while, I think finding yourself in this level hits in a totally different way. The fact that there's nothing inherently creepy about it really makes the strange vibe of the stage.. well, that much stranger. Being spooked in the ghost house is one thing, but this stage doesn't seem to have been planned to be creepy. There's definitely something about it..
Anyway, just my two cents. I enjoyed the video, keep it up!
Or... There are people out there that just really don't find it creepy and believe it's more about people psyching themselves out over nothing which happens quite regularly even outside of the game.
TLDR: The Iceberg is just the fusion of every 12 year old's creepypastas mish mashed with some truth and rumors.

I'm surprised that the butterflies that randomly turn into exploding bombs aren't mentioned in the iceberg. That always unnerved me due to the fact that it would come out of nowhere. This usually occurs in the beginning of Tiny Huge Island, and in the grass patch near the top of Tall Tall Mountain.
...Or is that just a unique feature of my personalized copy?

@@Sunflower41XD Ignoring the Creepypasta, the Butterflies in early game give you a 1-up and in later levels, bombs. It is in all copies that was a easter egg not something set up by Mr. YellowDemon. Also bring back the CreepyPasta, The Appiration is a hoax and is fake we know but if hoaxes like this are Personalized or something I feel like the Anti-Piracy Beta Screen should be on it in the Deep Waters section. It's a Fan-Made video and is somewhat eerie

As a child, OOT used to creep me out waaaaay more than Mario 64. I literally couldn't sleep when I saw deku's death; Mario 64, instead, never caused me nightmares, it's too joyful! Anyways, this creepypasta is dope, I love it.
Zelda games just creeped me out I was used to Mario so the atmosphere of Zelda games gave me nightmares
36:13 I think part of the negativity comes from playing the whole game instead of WDW as an isolated level. Since it's a weird "mid point" stage. It feels bizarre compared to the rest of the game, out of place and unfinished.
I remember playing Wet Dry World on the DS for the first time and then being sick a day later.
Maybe unrelated, maybe motion sickness, either way its weird how so many people react the similar way.
Plot Twist: 2401 is when Nintendo will remake this game with Luigi playable.
I love Super Mario 64, but everytime I play it I have this strange feeling. I feel alone, kinda sad and with not much to do. Like, I don't feel motivated to do the missions and obtain the Stars. I do them, but I feel so alone and weird that I stop a short period of time later. It's very weird. There's something else I'd like to note. About 6 years ago when I was a child and played SM64 on my tablet, I felt awesome. It was great. But recently, when I downloaded the ROM and started playing again for the nostalgia, I felt the way I described.
I felt the exact same when I played. The basement always creeped me out, no joke. I was alone in a basement, a huge castle with no one around, and seeing a creepy looking fireball painting smiling at you didn’t help at all lol.
I've always felt the same way too! I played the ds version when I was a kid and I had that exact same feeling; loneliness and empty, and maybe like something was watching me..? I feel like there's an odd quietness in the "Inside the Castle Walls" song, just something about how quiet and slow it is along with being alone in a massive castle with tons of doors and hallways...that always got to me and to this day I'm still creeped out by it. It's like having the negative emotion aura from Wet-Dry World but for the whole game...

About 6 years later, I downloaded the game on an emulator and tried to play through it, only to find it kind of bad. It felt creepy, sad, lonely, unnerving. I couldn't even get to the second floor.

Unrelated/related, but you'd be surprised just how many people grew up with Mario 64. I'd say, for a generous estimate, 1985 - 2005ish? Since the DS port was released too, and I grew up with that, plus ROMs of 64. Crazy that most of us can say that we've all heard most of these

I was born in 1980 and got mine Dec 96. Don't have it anymore but still play it on an emulator. The game never gets boring. Also downloaded the fan made super Mario land 64 Rom. Should give it a try. It's Mario 64 with many new power ups and bosses and levels.

the iceberg breaks down for me at Wet Dry World's negative aura, its one of my favorite levels in the game, if anything Dire Dire Docks makes me feel uneasy every time i play

I have a few theories as to why Wet-Dry World seems to give off such an eerie vibe:
1: I think this may have been one of the earlier levels in development. Compared to the other levels, which have a coherent theme to them, this one feels more like a souped-up beta/test level, consisting of lots of simple shapes and platforms with functional, highly visible textures. I remember reading somewhere that the first year of SM64's development consisted of just Mario in an empty room, jumping around to ensure that his movement controls worked as they should have. And Wet-Dry World is a level that really tests your ability to use all of Mario's jumping and moving abilities. I wouldn't be surprised if this was originally a playtesting arena, where playtesters were instructed to make Mario run, jump, climb, and swim to ensure everything worked right.
2: Claustrophobia and hostile architecture. Wet-Dry World is one of the few levels that takes places entirely "indoors", being walled off on all sides, and compared to the others, it's very small and cramped. The architecture is all brick and metal with few convenient ways of getting around, making the whole place feel very artificial, hostile, and unwelcoming. The "skybox" appears dark despite the sun and give the appearance of being viewed from underwater, and once you unlock the way to get to the lower level, not only are you completely cut off from the sky, you're also trapped with no way to get back to where you were without exiting the level completely.
3: It's a really hard level and as a kid it really sucked to play

Clarification on the wiggler body thing
Someone tried editing the actual graphics for the wiggler’s body and it didn’t correlate with the orbs in the arena, so the two objects are using two separate graphic files

Sunflower Honestly, I feel like the fact they’re different graphics could still support that theory. If they were the exact same graphic it’d be easy to assume that it was done solely to conserve memory by reusing stuff, but the fact that they deliberately made a new sprite that looks almost identical to the wiggler body makes it feel a bit more intentional

It's ironic that your gf laughed and had a good time playing in a level that was supposed to have a negative emotional aura.
The way parallel universes work is the fact that collision is checked on an finite value bounded by the size of the map, which is several orders of magnitude larger than the actual level. Mario's position meanwhile is on an infinite scale with no upper bound. You aren't intended to get to the edge of the map, so if Mario's position exceeds collision detection, the value overflows and loops around to the negatives. Eventually you reach where collision should exist in a positional value way outside the map, and collision still exists there.
There's actually a layer of truth to the myth that SM64 is personalized. You see, some games have functions to dynamically adjust their difficulty to tailor to the player's skill *or lack thereof*. Games like Crash Bandicoot and Resident Evil 4 employ this to some extent. So the way I see it, it wouldn't be anything crazy for SM64 to employ some difficulty adjustment as well.
Yeah those games create tense moments by making sure you either slaughter everything or just scrape by or something. Maybe they stopped developing Luigi to include the AI
Yeah, the RE2 remake is impossible to play through if you can aim, Zombies take over 20 headshots to kill once the game realizes that you're decent and you literally don't have enough ammo to kill even 1% of the enemies.

The "impossible goomba" explanation is as follows: that goomba, as well as the two that are actually on the platform, are spawned in via a single object called a "goomba triplet" which spawns three goombas in a triangle. The problem is that one of the points on that particular triangle wound up being placed slightly over the edge of the platform.

My theory for the Delicious Cake is that she wrote the letter before making the cake, so that by the time the letter was delivered, read by Mario, and his arrival, she would've had the cake ready and t would still be fresh. Unfortunately sometime after she sent the letter, but before she started baking, Browser took over.
Honestly, I find the "Every copy of Mario 64 is personalized" theory/meme is interesting, because I've noticed that with most videos on that topic, they either edit in or mod in something spooky to lend credence to the theory, essentially personalizing their own copies of Mario 64 themselves. I was pleasantly surprised you didn't do something similar at the end of this video(In fact, you parodying the Wario Apparition videos when you visited the DDD/BitFS room got a good chuckle out of me). These iceberg videos are rather goddamn interesting to watch, well done.
I never really experienced anything odd with this game, just a general loneliness that I also felt with other games as a kid.
There was that one time I looked away from the screen and my sisters started screaming there was a shark in the water (in the castle yard). I didn't see it but they were convinced. There was a shark model for the game but who knows?
Edit: The cake screen being set in a dark room doesn't seem creepy to me, like maybe it was a birthday thing, but HOLY COW I have never noticed that Yoshi before! Thanks I hate it now 😣
