During this concert, it was a total mind blowing effect. They had managed to buy our albums on the black market. Granted USSR was censoring anything from the west but they still managed. We had no idea how they would receive us and they surpassed any concert before. Needless to say, afterward we shared a love for music that crumbled a Communist state.

I was a 16yo boy in the soviet bloc at that time, it was a historic moment. There's no other drug like freedom. I love watching reactions to this, and how most of the people reacting don't even understand the significance of what they're watching at the moment. :D
This was a huge deal at the time. The fall of the Soviet Union. They got to witness, for the first time, something we'd gotten to do for years. I was a teenager and didn't really understand it at the time and it wasn't until years later that I realized what it meant to them in the audience.
Another great song they did at this concert was Creeping Death...although it had some naughty words in it. You can't go wrong with Metallica. Great reaction!

I was working at a youth camp in the UK at the time the wall fell. It was during a two week international arts and performance camp. When the news broke all 2000 people on site just roared. No one slept that night.

Mexican band The Warning took TH-cam by storm with their rendition of this song; that's also worth checking out. They're a trio of sisters, and they rock.
Such a great performance that only Metallica could have put on. Not to lie though, Pantera put on an epic performance at that very same show in Moscow. ACDC as well. The show was free btw.

Live in moscow? There were over 1.6 million people there, it was crazy. There were soldiers up front to make sure the crowd didn't go crazy but they did (It's a metallica concert, duh) so they literally just threw their helmet off and enjoyed the show, if I remember correctly from the interview metallica did after this show
Metallica is a great example of how much better the live concert experience is. Studio albums are great, but seeing the 4 guys out on stage playing their butts off is a great vibe.

This is far from one of my favorite Metallica songs, but one from the black album that I've always enjoyed is 'Of Wolf and Man.' It's severely underrated imo, but if y'all get the chance, I would highly recommend. Such an epic concert though, would've loved to be there.

I saw them in the Astrodome in 92 when I was forced to work security for the event (Faith No More and Guns and Roses also performed). I was unimpressed with Metallica because every other word (literally) from the lead singer was the F bomb. There was a very active mosh pit in front of the stage and some kid was severely injured. We couldn't wade into that mess and had to wait for some other kid to carry him out. Liliac's rendition of the song is my favorite version. Melody's roar counterparted with Justin's voice set the mood for the song better than any other version IMO.

You said there is typical concert stuff going on, but the people attending never had real concerts as you know it. They are forbidden right until the Berlin Wall fall and the dissolution of the USSR. The people there came to the concert because it was free and hosted by the biggest US metal bands of the time. It was the biggest crowd attending a metal concert in history and the military was there to keep people in check. The helicopters are flying around and they scream through megaphones at people "Stop! WTF are you doing?!" Because they did not know what moshpits are or what headbanging is. At some point the military guys took off their jackets and hats and thought "Screw it!" and joined in. It was the taste of freedom for people who were opressed for centuries and generations. It is sad to see what is happening to them and their neighbours now through the hands of one crazy dictator. The 90s in russia were the most free years and people had the most hope. Then it only went downhill.

That guitar was made by a company called ESP (Electric Sound Products). A small Japanese guitar co that got famous for making high quality copies of other brands designs. ESP got sued for copyright and trademark violations frequently throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. ESP saw it as free advertising, in fact...it made them the "bad boys" of the guitar world In 1991 Gibson Guitars, an American company, thought they were going to sign James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett (lead guitarist) as endorsees to their brand. James and Kirk famously played Gibson guitars but were not officially endorsed by Gibson. The guitar that James loved was the Gibson Explorer. in late 1990 ESP contacted James Hetfield and said they would make him a copy of an Explorer but they would make it better and to James' specs. Long story short... Gibson saw James playing an ESP copy of their Explorer and sued ESP. Gibson won in court but got no money from ESP because the guitar in question was not a normal production model for ESP. It was a prototype. However, legend has it that ESP did make at least 3 others. 2 were given to family members of ESP execs, and one was sent to Gibson in Nashville for some good natured rivalry. Gibson claims they did not get one. In the end, Gibson got a federal injunction against ESP for their "Explorer Style Prototype" (ironically also an ESP acronym). I am absolutely freaked out by your non-reaction to the size of the crowd for this "little show" as Walker puts it late in the video. It was about time stamp 10:20 before you even mention the size of the crowd for the first time. Almost 1.7 "million" people gathered together and you don't even react to that. Wow!!! I've seen the video several times, I'm middle-age and it still blows my mind every single time. How can you not be freaked by that? HavIng lived within 90km of the Iron Curtain for 12 years of my childhood and having visited Berlin twice in the early 80's. You guys, not trying to be rude here, will thankfully and hopefully NEVER have a clue to what the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact was. This was "literal" freedom from complete repression after 70+ years for hundreds of millions of people. UGH, I could write for hours on this topic as I basically grew up bext door to it and took 3 courses on Russian and Soviet History (300 level courses) while at university. Count your blessings...
This was a rare even in history because Russia at those times is not only Russia but The Union of Soviet Socialist Republic. Ruled by a dictator at those time and Mikhail Gorbachiv. This was their first concert and a short experience of the people of USSR of what freedom was before the collapse of USSR later that same year.

HavIng lived within 90km of the Iron Curtain for 12 years of my childhood and having visited Berlin twice in the early 80's. You guys, not trying to be rude here, will thankfully and hopefully NEVER have a clue to what the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact was. This was "literal" freedom from complete repression after 70+ years for hundreds of millions of people. UGH, I could write for hours on this topic as I basically grew up bext door to it and took 3 courses on Russian and Soviet History (300 level courses) while at university. Count your blessings...
This was a rare even in history because Russia at those times is not only Russia but The Union of Soviet Socialist Republic. Ruled by a dictator at those time and Mikhail Gorbachiv. This was their first concert and a short experience of the people of USSR of what freedom was before the collapse of USSR later that same year.
