this is one of the biggest concerts of all time it was right after the cold war ended and russia wanted to know more about the western cultures so they asked westen bands to come to moscow there was 1.6 million people in attendance and it was and still is one of the most important concerts of all time

Less than a year before this concert took place, it was technically illegal to play this type of music via tape, record or CD. Most of the people that went to this concert were there to release their feelings for this type of music for the first time ever in public.

They lost count around 1.6 MILLION. It was a free concert and the first Heavy metal gig allowed in the USSR, so it was a massive deal - they used a military airbase just outside Moscow with the Army as security
In 1989 Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne, Scorpions, Motley Crue and Cinderella played at the Moscow music peace festival

I upvote this. As good as Metallica is. Pantera stole this show. Highly agree. Watch Domination - Live in Moscow. You will not be disappointed and you will get to see one of the greatest shred sessions ever, Ontop of one of the most aggressive, hard hitting bands ever. If not the MOST hard hitting band ever.
I'd like more into their discography and I'd also look into their successors (In my opinion), Lamb of God. I'd start with one of their newest, The quarantine live addition of New Colossal Hate, So you can see them perform live and how good they are too.

I watched this entire concert live on MTV back in 91 and I gotta say it's one of the best concerts I've ever seen
I can only imagine the feeling of playing in front of that many people and feeding off that energy! This concert will probably never be duplicated as far as numbers.

In the aftermath of a failed coup, Russia's prez invited AC/DC to play a free show in a Moscow airfield in Sept. 1991... Metallica, The Black Crowes, and Pantera were the opening bands... 1.6 million Russians showed up to see all 4 bands play Russia for the 1st time.
Metallica were riding high on a #1 self-titled album (aka the 'black' album) all over the world... so they were in top form. Unfortunately, Russian military were on hand for security, and violence broke out during their set... It was out of control, but Metallica were powerless to stop it. By the end of their set, a number of people had been beaten to death... reportedly over 100 rapes... It was a shocking reality check for the band.
Imagine how scared a certain mid-level KGB officer in St Petersburg was in this moment. I swear Putin launched his plan to take over the country this day.

This is what is called talking out of your butt. There were a few deaths, probably a few rapes. One can surmise that just from the crowd size. Outside of that, there is zero legitimate data backing up any numbers with any degree of accuracy. Zilch.
1.6 million people, many more people died at this concert than Travis’ but you have to remember the monumental size of the crowd too.
And this was over 3 days event not an hour and half.
I recently learned that the "50 people died" story is almost certainly a myth. No deaths were reported at the time, and I suspect the authorities would have publicized any deaths in order to discredit the West and its decadent music.
Dudes what's official reported and what happened is very different in Russia. If it makes them look bad, officially it didn't happen even if there's evidence for it happening.

If you want to react to that song that was in the beginning, the one from the movies, you should check out the live version performed by The Danish National Symphony Orchestra. It is the theme from the movie "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly". It is definitely worth watching.
My pops used to like Metallica before they blew up and got real huge. He introduced his friends to them and of course they all loved the music. I was born in 1983 and used to jam out to Metallica on the way to kindergarten. Lol!

What I loved about music of the 70s, 80s and some of the 90s was the music sounded even BETTER in concert. It was their voice as the played music, rocking their asses off🤣

This was back in USSR times only months before it collapsed. Some say they went to woodstock as a flex but this concert beats that hands down.

This was right after the wall came down and Rock music wasn't just snuck underground anymore , they were free to listen. For thousands this was the very first time to hear rock music from America. The helicopter were necessary for cooling and airflow.

Very nice guys. Cliff Burton wanted them to move up to SF because he didn't want to live in LA. Cliff died in a bus accident in Europe. Dave Mustaine got fired because they didn't get along. Jason Newsted became the next bass player, but he eventually tapped out. Robert Trujillo was the bassist for Suicidal Tendancies. I saw these dudes looking for tickets in the parking lot at a Metallica concert in SF.
AC/DC were actually the headline act for this concert.

It was 1.6 million people there. Biggest concert ever I think. When they came on stage the crowd went bananas. People said the military and security was dancing lol they didn't have no other choice.
The helicpters flew low to create some wind to help keep the crowd cooled off. They were packed like sardines. Also..the distance from the stage to the end of the crowd was over a mile long

I've been to two large all day concerts with 350k people attending....and I thought those two had a lot of people. Funny, but not surprising, how far they came from performing in small clubs in SF in the early 80s. I saw them before their first album was out at The Stone on Broadway in SF in early '83. Dave was still with the band and Cliff had just joined. Who'da thought! This one, Monsters of Rock - Moscow, had just near 500k tickets sold, but there were so many people coming that they could not control it. They had to estimate the number of 1.6 million.

I was there, i was 20 years old. Never heard that someone died there. There were fights with police and army guys, `cause they never been trained to interact with such big crowd, were frightened and nervous and started to beat everyone with rubber sticks. But there was a lot of drunken people and when the gig was finished, it looked like a battlefield, because of bodies, laying on the ground.

my friend who was at this concert said that the news about the concert began to be told about a week in advance. He had already gone to bed, and his father was watching TV, and half asleep he heard the news about a rock concert in Moscow and quickly jumped out of bed

The "official" count was 1.6 million but the actual number is closer to 2 million-plus. They stopped counting when the free passes were exhausted, but hundreds of thousands more showed up.
