I just bought the 4x2 2.7 Eco sport super crew and am loving it. Incredible value for your dollar and power to spare. My last truck was a ram 2500 6.7 Cummins and am not looking back. Love, love, love my ecoboost.
Finally somebody reviews a truck more on the lower end of the price range. Nicely done. I will dispute the reviewer's stance on the cab doors. The thing that really makes the Ford stand out in a positive manner is the way the doors open up.The whole side of the truck opens up, allowing for further flexibility that the other trucks gave up when they chose to move to conventional doors.
Good Review. I have the 2.7l in a Super Crew FX4 5.5ft bed and I get great mileage on the highway as good as 24. in the city I get about 17.5 MPG's. So far I'm really happy with the truck.
Great truck. The 2.7L Ecoboost is a very powerful engine for it's size and it still gets decent gpm for a half-ton. The displays & controls are actually user friendly which has not been my experience with Ford in the past.

+Klent F I'm not sure how much extra gears would help this truck setup in mpg. When I'm accelerating, it barely exceeds 2000 RPM as it's speeding up and upshifting, and when it does go beyond 2000, it doesn't stay there long, and when highway cruising, it stays in 6th gear except for the steepest grades here in TN. Of course, if you're sporting around and putting your foot in it, it's a different matter and it'd probably help to have more gears, but for normal driving, these 6 gears are very smooth and it's constantly upshifting, staying in the low RPM range most all the time, and that's with the highest gearing available with a 3.31 rear axle ratio. Like you hinted, this is not like any of the standard V6 base engines and doesn't deserve to be called a V6 in that some ole derogatory way, because this thing drives like a mid-size V8 and that's due to the fact that it's got low end torque like a V8. Ford uses this same sort of technology in an all-new 2.3 four banger that they put in Mustangs and larger sedans like a Taurus and large crossovers like Edge. It's the same deal. Those 4 cylinders drive like big engines. The one in the Mustang is an upgrade engine from the base V6.

@@davegordon6943 no sadly I got rid of it a few years ago. Never had issues with it other than the fact that because it was a newer model, the door latches wouldn't always latch in the winter and when washing the truck. But it was a warranty replacement and was fixed fast. It was a great 2.7l
Greg, Thanks for the great review. I purchased a F-150 SXT new in 2004 which now has over 300,000 problem free miles from the 4.6L V-8. I have considered replacing the old girl and looked at a 2015 XLT with the 2.7L eco-boost but was not very familiar with the motor or power range. Your review was great and eases my mind about purchasing a large truck with a smaller powerplant. Keep up the reviews!
I was hesitant on going with the 2.7L in mine versus the 5.0, but the 2.7 is perfectly adequate. I've even towed a 4,000 pounds trailer and it never felt like it was lacking any power. When you put it in sport mode and give it some gas, it'll throw you back in the seat.
I have a 2013 4x4 STX supercab with 6.5ft bed. Great truck. Often I wish for a few more inches in the back but more often I am thankful for that extra foot of bed space. And any longer would be unparkable in garages, etc. Agreed with your comments.
Outstanding review. I am looking at this sort of truck to replace an '06 V8 which I drove for about a year and loved. My preference would have been for a used truck, given the potential savings. However, after settling on the 2.7L Ecoboost I'm thinking that newer is better, seeing as they probably made some tweaks and improvements, given how new it is. Also, its a lot harder to find exactly what you want in a used truck with relative low mileage. The price tag is hefty! I'm working my way to swallowing the loan/payments and possibly heading in this direction.
Today is Oct 7, 2016. I live in San Juan, PR (was just in ABQ, NM at balloon fest). I am in the process of buying a 2016 F150 XL Sport Appearance package. 2.7 Ecoboost, Rear view camera, 20" alloy wheels, sprayed in bed liner, and other extras. Total out the door $33995. After watching your video I am going straight to the Ford dealer and close the deal. Your explanation was clear and concise.
Nice work on both F150 reviews! Thanks. I just bought one similar to the XLT crew cab (silver super cab) you reviewed and the discounts were close to $10,000, so $36K for one with a sticker at $46K. I just love the truck, it is a dream to drive. The old truck was an 01 XL Superduty diesel Xcab with 8' bed. The only comparison is they both have a tailgate and 4 wheels. I haven't tried the 'backup assist' for a trailer yet, should be amusing! Keep up the great work.
Good review. Just bought a 2019 STX Package that fits me well. 2.7 Liter Ecoboost is doing 22.5 average per tank. That other 2013 F-150 with the 3.5 NA non Turbo was a gas monster.
Great review! I’ve owned a 2019 Supercab 2WD STX 2.7l for 7 months now. Dealer was having year-end close out and 2WD doesn’t sell as easily as 4WD. Sticker was almost 41k. After dealer cash, rebates, Ford credit discount, military discount, and a little bargaining, I drove away with a new truck for less than $30k! It’s been a great pickup so far. I live in the coastal plains south, so don’t need 4WD. Pulls and launches a 19’ boat no problem.
You spoke of size a few times, I'd like to chime with my 2 cents on the subject. I'm 6"6" and I am in love. Over the weekend I'd tried the RAM 1500, Chevy Silverado, Nissan Titan, and the Ford F-150. This F-150 is cavernous in comparison. It has nice spacing between my knees and the dashboard and steering wheel, good overhead space (hard top, non-sunroof model tested), and the side over side space for my arms / armrest real estate is just phenomenal. Getting in and out with minimal shoulder scrunch / head ducking was unexpected, and I don't have to slide in at awkward angles to fit my knees past the wheel. The specific model I test drove was the XLT Sport w/ supercab. I swear I sat in the pilot seat in awe for a solid five minutes just TRYING to find a reason not to buy it right then and there. Now the only big question is, do I pull the trigger on a year end deal or wait for the tax refund season events?
Great video, great review. It's nice to see a video on a more affordable truck. It's not bad looking for a "plain Jane" truck either although at almost 40k it's still pricy. Subscribed, keep up the great work!
I purchased the 2015 F150 Lariat in August and took the truck on a 4,000 road trip. At no time did this truck get 26mpg. The best mileage was 22.8 on only from one tank of fuel. Average consumption was 20.2 mpg after 177.754 gallons (80% highway miles). My wife and I enjoyed all aspects of the truck during our trip. The only problems was the usb plug over charging one of our iPhones and the phone shut down. Apple in Denver got the phone back in business. Lesson learned, charge & unplug. Doug
+Doug Dobson of course you didnt get 26 mpg that is peak mileage tested on a base 4x2 model. You are getting great mileage! I have a 2011 supercrew 4x4 with the 20 inch wheel option and 3.55 gears and a level lift and I average about 16 to 16.5 mpg average city on the stock tune. People expect so much from the pickups and they are getting great mileage to boot! My truck scales at 6300 lbs with fuel, me and equipment. Frankly that is awesome!
There have been many, many reviews and consumer complaints of drivers reporting poor fuel economy with this engine in the F150. Those disappointing mpg numbers range between 15-19. That was not acceptable to me, but I took a chance anyway. After taking a chance on this 2.7, as someone who wanted sort of a base model, regular cab with just a few more options than a work truck as a daily driver and light-duty hauler and comparing the Ford 2.7 to the GM V6 DI to the Ram Penstar with an 8 speed all for around the same money, my rationale paid off. The problem with those disappointing reviews of the 2.7 EB, the best I can tell, is that they are reviewing usually 4wd, super crews, and high axle ratios and that maybe the good mpg that this engine can achieve is squandered away when its combined in a truck that's going to keep the turbos on boost and sucking more fuel most all the time. I'm not sure if my rationale is correct, but I do know that I'm averaging 23 in mixed, conservative driving in a half-ton truck, with a gas motor, and that's pretty impressive, since one can't even get the configuration I got in diesel that starts at $38K, whereas I paid around $28K for a good truck with good fuel economy and good torque. I think that's where Ford's engine technology really shines, and probably does very well with respect to the truck tested in this video as well, but one can't expect to opt for a gargantuan truck with all the bells and whistles and all available capability and put any gas engine to push it and get good fuel economy.
nice video! never seen your reviews until this one. I like how you did a child demonstration. I will be purchasing a truck for when I start my family and I am looking at new trucks now, because when I am in the market (3-5 years) I will be able to afford them during that time.
Great review as always. Glad you picked the ext cab. It IS a nice truck, but 35k? A coworker just got a fx4 with the 2.7 for not that much more. I cant wait for you to do the Diesel Colorado. The real decision of price vs needs vs wants will come with this 2.7 ford vs the GM diesel.....or we could all just wait for the Ranger! Imagine this 2.7 engine in an Al body Ranger. What will that fuel economy be like.
+truck guy fiftynine Cheapest Colorado/Canyon Duramax diesel you can buy has an MSRP of around $34K-$35K. Cheapest Ram Ecodiesel you can buy has an MSRP of around $38.5K. Cheapest F150 with the 2.7 Ecoboost MSRP at or about $27K. I'll conceded that either diesel kills the Ecoboost in fuel economy and love that low end torque @ 369 and 420, respectively, and wish that some OEM would or could put a small diesel in a regular truck at a reasonable premium,. but considering the anti-diesel regulatory environment concerning diesel emissions, the EPA calls "fuel neutral", it's not going to happen unless there is a major breakthrough in technology that allows for lean combustion without the creation of nitrogen oxides.
I bought this truck in 4x4 love it. I agree with pretty much all that you said , I can see how the doors would get annoying in your case but I am single and no kids so I got it for the extra cab space. mine has 4x4 and the rear locker and stickered for 38000 . the sport package adds the wheels and color matched bumpers( mine is black it looks sick) thanks for an honest review .
Another fun video. I remember when the 2015 Ford F150 premiered. I wasn't very impressed with its styling. It's a good looking vehicle overall, it's just the front of the truck which was the least attractive part of the truck. Looks aren't everything, though. I've never driven the truck, so I've yet to get a feel for what it's like. The only thing I've never liked is its lack of a turbo diesel engine. Even a 4 litre 4 cylinder would make this ute a fuel efficient workhorse. :)
Mr Anderson you've clearly never driven in more than a dusting of snow or up a hill. I couldn't even make it home some nights during a storm if I didn't have 4x4.
@@ravenjames3873 It's been available since 2015. Supercab with 8' bed. Here's an old brochure that shows all the options and configurations which are basically unchanged. www.ford.com/services/assets/Brochure?make=Ford&model=F-150&year=2017
Drove the Tundra V8, the RAM HEMI and both EcoBoost F150's (back-to-back) and I'd take the 2.7 all day long. It's smoother, better performing (braking, handling, mpg), more agile and I think the engine design is really solidly engineered. Unless you can't live without a V8 rumble, it's the best truck out there IMHO. The 3.5 feels slightly quicker higher up, but less dynamic/heavier. Light is right in my book. This video is long, but really explains the technical side of the engine design: th-cam.com/video/3S9jVjZ1Kn8/w-d-xo.html
I have this exact truck. I got it for racing motorcycles and it's perfect. I don't need 4WD because I race in the summer, duh. I can even close the gate and position the bike across the bed. I actually get up to 27 mpg on the highway so there's no reason not to buy this truck. By the way; it's really fast with nothing in it. I've never owned a better product.
I got the 2017 regular cab for $23,500, I actually kinda regret not stretching out and paying $30,000 for the super cab with sync 3. But at the same time, I like my low payments haha
Ride and handling? I work for a dealer that sells Dodge Ram trucks and I have noticed that the Ram trucks not only age faster than most of the GM or Ford trucks that have past through our pre-owned department, they also ride considerably harsher. I do not mean firm. That would be a reference as to how planted the vehicle feels. Harsh, is a reference to how bumps transmit through the seat and controls. Fords are firm but do not ride harsh or become unsettled easily. Gm trucks seamed to have a softer ride with in the same class and often exhibit slightly more body roll as a result but track well. Rams can be harsh and at some speeds the rear feels loose over irregular surfaces. They will transmit more bump steer than others and likewise transmit more bumps through the occupants. Which can actually result in some discomfort after driving for several hours, such as a sore back.
Mark Murarescu I will say this... The Ram by design is a good truck, how ever with the exception of most interior surfaces it seems they are manufactured with inferior materials. People forget the Ram is also not an American truck. It is built by Chrysler. Currently owned by Fiat. Formerly owned buy Daimler and before that Diamond Star. Chrysler has not been an American corporation since the late nineteen-seventies, which is almost half the life of the brands they are a associated with. So the efforts to remain a player on a global scale have led to a an ever changing list of vendors and consistences in build quality. Of course this is true of all brands at some level but it seems to effect Chrysler products on a grander scale.
I went to an event where they let people take a 5 minute drive in the new F150 before they were on the lots. I drove both the 2.7 and the 3.5. The 3.5 hauls ass for a V6. I wouldn't buy one like that as I'm tech savvy and like nicer tech in my truck. But 35k for a base model? Thats pretty high
Good review but I disagree with your fuel mileage claim on the 5.0. I have a 2016 f150 5.0 truck and I'm getting an easy 1000 kms to 36 gallons of fuel on the hwy with 373 gears. I wouldn't call the ecoboost "squashing" it in the fuel economy dept.
The only thing that is of concern with this configuration is safety rating. IIHS tested super crew and super cab and found this configuration didn't have same structure in the front making it perform a lot worse In small offset crashes. Ford didn't expect them to test the supercab. There are rumours it's been fixed for 2016.
+Aleks Lajzer If you run into a concrete bridge embankment at 60 mph on the front corner it crumble, so what!!! That alleged issue has not been addressed for 2016. Just don't hit immovable objects at high rates of speed and you will be fine.
Thank! Great review. I appreciate the evaluation of an intro level truck. Some reviews, with the bells and whistles of the more expensive versions, can be distracting and not realistic for my taste.
I have a wife, a 17 year old kid and a 90lbs dog. I am looking to get a pickup truck sometime next year 2020. I have watched your videos to try to see which would fit our needs best. The trouble is most all reviews focus on towing. My situation is a little different. My primary purpose is to haul the family and commute to work daily ( about 60/40 city/freeway) nothing extreme, and only about 50 miles a day round trip). The truck aspect is for the occasional trash haul, or helping someone move, or getting plywood at Home Depot for some project. With all that being said, I want the most comfortable room, best fuel economy, reliability, safety and price. What is your recommendation? Thank you..
go with the 2.7 Eco boost instead of the 3.5 Eco boost. LET me tell you why the EB 2.7 is a iron block and not a aluminum block like the EB 3.5 iron is way stronger than aluminum just heavier.
Great video, I share the same sentiments. I ended buying a XLT supercab 4x4 w/ the 2.7L, 8k miles so far and loving it. So many people want the full four doors that never have four passengers, I don't get it. Supercab size is perfect for just me yet I still have room for passengers in the few times that I do. One thing I had to have was the 2.7L payload package, adds 3.73 locking rear, really gets up and goes! So far im averaging around 21 MPG, and I'm probably around 50/50 city/hwy. If you get the right truck you won't regret it!
It's just not a good bet if you plan on keeping it past warranty. I also believe that Ford will intro an 8 speed soon to allow the twin turbos to finally deliver the economy they promise. The safest bet is the 3.5 baseline engine which is proven. Stupid crazy prices for new and lack of durability used will be unfortunate for the brand.
Great review. It's good to see reviews focus on what an average person may buy and not the $60,000 luxury truck market.
Average person doesn't need a truck. They want a truck. The average person is just fine buying a mustang or explorer.
This is how you do a proper reveiw! So tired of reviewers bashing everything Ford comes out with. Well done, sir!

+Jeremy Thompson Thanks for chiming in! Impressive work with that 04' SXT, hope your next vehicle serves you just as well.
-Greg
Jeremy Thompson 4.6l is bulletproof
I was hesitant on going with the 2.7L in mine versus the 5.0, but the 2.7 is perfectly adequate. I've even towed a 4,000 pounds trailer and it never felt like it was lacking any power. When you put it in sport mode and give it some gas, it'll throw you back in the seat.
I have a 2013 4x4 STX supercab with 6.5ft bed. Great truck. Often I wish for a few more inches in the back but more often I am thankful for that extra foot of bed space. And any longer would be unparkable in garages, etc. Agreed with your comments.
Another great video Greg! In my opinion, you cover all the important points. Two thumbs up!!!
Got crew cab XLT 6.5' bed, 2.7l
pulling 26' camper 7,000lb occasionally, 16' utility loaded pretty often.
Empty on hghwy 23,
Empty combined 19.7
16 ft 14-18
26ft camper 11
thanks for chiming in!
If that included extended warranty then go for it...if not I think that's a tad high. Limited slip axle?
Finally bought the truck for $33200. Added the 6/100k extended warranty with Pentagon Federal Credit Union for $995. Ford dealer price $2700. 4x2
That other 2013 F-150 with the 3.5 NA non Turbo was a gas monster.
thanks for chiming in.
Most people that get 4x4 don’t need it
Another great review! I like how you focus on cars that the average consumer would purchase. Not the 60k + ones.
Excellent review, straight to the point. Not everyone need/can afford a king ranch or something similar.
That was really good, thank you, I have been looking for and learning about trucks for the past 6 months and feel dissolutioned with the search...
I have a 2016 with a 2.7 L TwinTurbo crew cab short bed excellent truck I love it and had it now for two years
You spoke of size a few times, I'd like to chime with my 2 cents on the subject.
This video helped me decide that this was the truck for me. Thank you for a honest review.
solid video, I love my f150 supercab
2016 F165 (2.7) 4 door 2wd and it get 18 mpg in the city.
im actually buying the same truck tomorrow, you are right on target with your review...thank you
Thumbs up . Love my 2.7 ecoboost also.
Great video, great review. It's nice to see a video on a more affordable truck. It's not bad looking for a "plain Jane" truck either although at almost 40k it's still pricy. Subscribed, keep up the great work!
Showing love for the SuperCab!!!!!!
Doug Dobson I would love to get 20mpg. I get about 12 in my 5.4l f150 no matter how or where I drive it.
A family of six?! woah hehe
great reviews as usual.
thank you
+Asif Farooqui thanks...and yes, I'm a bit busy!
-Greg
Alot of looking and alot of time spent looking for this type info. Thanks
I really like your unbiased opinion. Thank you.
For me it's the best choice in terms of configuration and price!
nice video! never seen your reviews until this one.
I bought that exact same truck in greay for 26999 with ford had a special price for certain ones. Very hard to find that deal
I got basically the same truck with the factory 20's for 26500 + ttl. MSRP on trucks doesn't mean much
Yes, the rebates really knock down that MSRP.
The resale is also a joke
mark p you write that like every single ecoboost engine blows up before 100k miles...
ShepherdsWrench i love ford
good review of the f150 with the vinyl floor. in fact the only one...
Thanks bryce I do love this truck very much.
Fantastic video. Covered my questions so thoroughly.
Good job👍🏼 nice to see u back
+Gerardo Sierra thanks! I've been busy with the start of the school year.
-Greg
Great review...very informative. I agree with ur rationale for the 2.7 ecoboost motor. I'm considering buy f150 supercrew with 2.7 motor.
can you do a vidoe on the Ford F150 regular cab with the long bed????
Great presentation and review! Well done.
85% of people who buy 4x4 honestly don't need it. My 2wd goes through snow fine.
Mr Anderson you've clearly never driven in more than a dusting of snow or up a hill. I couldn't even make it home some nights during a storm if I didn't have 4x4.
I live in Manitoba Canada. My father only owned 2wd and as had no problem in winter.
@@brad8665 as he said, "85% of people" don't need the 4x4
Gordon yeah but he said his 2wd goes through snow find. Which is bs
No. Wrong. It’s actually 83%.
Cool review video, man. I like your style.
a regular cab review will be awesome!
I'd like a 6 sitter and an 8 ft. bed, it's a must for me
you can get it with the super cab
but what type of engine are they
well I you have the 2.7 Ecoboost the 3.5 Ecoboost and the coyote v8
that's never gonna happen
@@ravenjames3873 It's been available since 2015. Supercab with 8' bed. Here's an old brochure that shows all the options and configurations which are basically unchanged. www.ford.com/services/assets/Brochure?make=Ford&model=F-150&year=2017
just the video I was looking for
Drove the Tundra V8, the RAM HEMI and both EcoBoost F150's (back-to-back) and I'd take the 2.7 all day long.
TNX for testing base version
I have this exact truck. I got it for racing motorcycles and it's perfect. I don't need 4WD because I race in the summer, duh.
I can even close the gate and position the bike across the bed. I actually get up to 27 mpg on the highway so there's no reason not to buy this truck. By the way; it's really fast with nothing in it. I've never owned a better product.
I got the 2017 regular cab for $23,500, I actually kinda regret not stretching out and paying $30,000 for the super cab with sync 3. But at the same time, I like my low payments haha
Good video about the f150 and im the 1000th like!
Fantastic review. Super helpful, thank you!
Thank! Great review. I appreciate the evaluation of an intro level truck. Some reviews, with the bells and whistles of the more expensive versions, can be distracting and not realistic for my taste.
Firstly I have to see your mountain bike. If that beast doesn't fit in a 5.5' bed without it being at an angle. :)
Great honest review...
Great review
With current incentives these trucks are going for 27-29k out the door.
I'm debating between this truck and a gmc canyon crew cab? I kinda like the ford
Considering a lot of you people don't drive that well. The super crew cab is safer in a crash.
I think that problem was fixed in 2016 models making all versions equally as safe
Yes it was.
Sensible review. Well done.
Very useful review, thank you.
Where have you been ? Missed your reviews .
keep em coming.
awesome review!
Chainheart Machine I will tell you if your loading stuff at the store it's a lot easier with the super crew vs ext cab
Can you do a review of the 2015-2016 pro master city?
Thanks for the review.
It's just not a good bet if you plan on keeping it past warranty. I also believe that Ford will intro an 8 speed soon to allow the twin turbos to finally deliver the economy they promise. The safest bet is the 3.5 baseline engine which is proven. Stupid crazy prices for new and lack of durability used will be unfortunate for the brand.
nice video, can u do a review on another truck like this one
+Marcus Scott I'm sure I'll be in a full sizer again soon.
Thanks for watching.
-Greg
What's most important, even more than fuel economy, is...reliability
Are gallup dealers starting to put tinted windows as well?
Anybody can give any feedback on how this eco boost hold on? Miles and transmission and maintenance…. Trying to get one of this ….
solid review
5.0 Coyote has 385 horse and 387 ft lbs of torque, otherwise great review.
