I've been using a Dell Inspiron 13 7359, 2-in-1 for 5 years and you wouldn't believe how fragile is that identification wire in the charger cable. Even though the adapter works just fine and the cable looks solid from the outside that damn thing gets damaged somehow and your computer won't charge without it. Although I am a very attentive user and my charger was never worn out like the one you show in this video, I had to buy a new Dell charger every 1,5 years. After buying the last one, I found a large flat tin box and put the charger in it when not used in order to prevent the cable from getting twisted. Today, after two years, my last charger gave the first recognition failure despite all the care. It was possible to get the thing to work only by changing the cable position a few times before replugging but it was a very bad sign that the connection failure now wil start getting worse and worse in the upcoming weeks until purchasing another dell charger will be inevitable. I got so frustrated with this chronic problem that only for this reason I will never buy a Dell computer again.

THANK YOU!!! My Inspiron 7368 wasn’t detecting my 2 year old battery and adapter (Wattage could not be determined) was powering PC but not charging battery. You helped give me courage to replace the battery with one purchased from Amazon which PC detected as healthy. Then I purchased a new ‘Dell’ adapter from Amazon, solving the “battery not charging” problem. With fully charged battery, I installed updates, which also fixed the speakers that previously sounded so bad I thought they were blown. Now it’s performing like NEW!

Thank you -Thank you!! Since Dell doesn't release schematics or block diagrams and reading countless support forums, I was debating a motherboard since I had previously tried a different OEM charger for this model. Once you explained the function of the center pin, I got out my stereo scope (looks like the same as yours) and low and behold the jack center socket was a bit funky so the center pin on the charger was deflecting and not making good contact. Fiddled with it under the scope and got it working again after a year of pain. New jack and new charger on order (total under $30) and I"m back in business. You rock!

    Hey, bro
I'm so happy that I looked at this video. I have a Dell inspiron 15 3000 intel 5 and the ac adapter was not being recognise so I thought that I need a battery and I bought one. Then the battery still wasn't being charged. I looked into the adapter port for the pin and saw that it was twisted so I straightened it and not the laptop battery is being charged. Just want to say, keep doing what you doing!

Hi I had bought a dell latitude 3400 recently (around month and half) and i also faced the issue of my laptop not turning on!. I have tried all the techniques of removing the battery and click on power button for 30secs to remove the residual powers and all, i end up with the same result. Then i tried to run the pc without battery and inserted the battery while booting. This detected the battery and it worked. Hope this helps who are facing the same issue.

Thanks a ton for this video. I didnt know the middle wire was a charger sensing circuit. The plastic in my dc input terminal is broken, but it's been like that for years. It suddenly stopped working recently, so I didnt think that was the cause.
Sure enough, measuring continuity between the two wires and there was a dead short. No amount of bending the pins would get it to work again.
To be sure, I was able to put a small piece of plastic to keep the middle pin isolated and now its charging normally. Will buy a new dc input terminal.
You saved me over $1000 usd as I was about to give up on it and buy a new laptop. I owe you a beer haha

Several lives ago when I was a Dell tech (in the age of steam powered D620's (and as far back as the GX1) some of the laptops would decide not to charge the battery.
In that case, I found power down, remove battery, power up, reinstall battery.
This allowed the laptop to "see" that there was a change in state (A battery had been added) and away it went...
I used to work on a laptop or 2... 750 staff in the building I was in so I had a few to play with.
I got chatting to Dell after the nVidia chips were failing on the d620's and I had to point out to them that the CPU/GPU shared heatsync when installed, had a paper thin air gap (you could actually pass a slice of paper under them). The solution was a shim of copper to remove the air "insulation'.
I got disillusioned with IT when they shifted the help-desk to Mumbai and they kept trying to get users to rebuild their laptops when the video chip had failed (the double image on the screen was an obvious clue to a hardware not software fault...)

"Computer is absolutely fine." IF ONLY I could get it started. Lots of power issues with Dells. Disconnecting the CMOS battery helped. Also, I don't think the model number of the charger is as important as the specs printed on it. I'm currently using a Dell charger made for a 15-year-old Inspiron for my 5-year-old Lattitude with no problems.

    @vangoetheiyandemye3218 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you alot man, it just fixed the issue for me
I wanna point out that i had this issue on a brand new (almost 2 month old) dell inspiron 15 5515 and the power adapter was fine with no sign of tearing and so but had the problem of not charging
For my case, i think it is related to issue of dell laptops having trouble to wake up from hibernation. Usually i fix it with a force start method but not this time and plugging in the AC adapter showed no sign of charging
After following this method of unplugging the battery and the bios battery, the computer started normally and the AC adapter was working fine(it showed no sign of charging because I found out that the battery was fully charged so the computer showed no sign of charging which is the case everytime when the battery is full)

Tks for the info, my 2015 XPS 13 9343 did not charge, when plugged in to the adapter the white LED would come on for a few seconds. No message or error indication and no flashing or amber light! Laptop working ok with adapter plugged in to AC. Checked the connector on the adapter cable and noticed no continuity from the center pin to + or - of the adapter at all with VOM, infinity. Cut the connector of the cable and found the blue wire connected to the center pin broke off. Dismantled connector, discarded the light in the connector and resoldered all 3 connections. Charging ok now!

My XPS 17 9700 has been randomly stopping charging when plugged in since I bought it ... both with the charger and the Thunderbolt docking station. My previous Dell did the same thing. There is some design flaw in the dell laptops/chargers that causes this. Unplugging the USB C connection from the laptop and plugging it back in "fixes" it until the next time.

Great video the best I’ve seen so far. Just one question when you press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain should the power adapter be plugged on unplugged from the laptop. My current Dell XPS 15 9550 is having exactly the same problem and my power adapter has been replaced and is only 3 months month but it clearly seems it is very sensitive to breakage due to the way people wrap the cord around the charger. I don’t understand why Dell does not fix this design flaw. Can you also suggest any quality charges that are much better than the original Dell adapter to prevent this from happening again. Thanks.

The end of the cable from the charger gets a lot of bending and stress when plugging/unplugging it, so the center connector often breaks there. Cut off the rubber covering and inspect it. The center connection will probably be broken.
I fixed mine by soldering a short piece of wire from the center pin connection point to the wire it is supposed to connect with. (Mine was a blue wire, with the white and black wires connecting the ground and positive. Covered it with hot melt glue for insulation and it is working again....ugly though.

Hi. Great video. I have a Latitude E7270. It has the power adapter not recognised error. I fitted a new dc socket. the problem persists. I have another dell charger, a 90 watt one but that has the same problem even though it works fine on another dell laptop. The Latitude will power up with the error ok and work with the bettery disconnected. If i connect the battery it will start and display the not recognised error, then start to load Windows and then switch off. Any ideas?? are the Dell chargers specific to the laptop model or can any dell charger with the correct plug and 95watts be used? I am not sure what to try next. I feel like buying a new charger specific to the E7270 but done want to waste money. your opinion would be a great help. Many Thanks 🙂

Got a xps 13 9360 for cheap for the same problem. Open it up and move the charging port cable a little bit and put a small thin plastic plate over the charging port. Close and power up. The laptop is charging again. Nothing to do with the charger at all. Also any 45w+ USB C charging devices also work once the Dell firmware update is installed.

Hi, I replaced the battery and I also replaced the charger since I did notice that the center pin was broken. Upon getting a new official dell charger the message says plugged but not charging. Upon further inspection I noticed that my problem is on the computer end where I connect to the charger. So it's not the charger itself because I bought a new one. It's the part of the computer where It connects to the charger. How can I fix this part or where can I order that internal computer part? Any and all help is greatly appreciated Thank You.

Dell has a problem with its software or rather in their testing department. Dell default enables an optimized battery charging setting, change this setting to 'standard'. A reboot might be necessary. That did the trick for me, it's charging fine again. Luckily I was in the last day of my warranty so the tech employee could help me out free of charge.

I just straightened the cable and it fixed issue... (don't panic if: reinstalling drivers doesn't work, changing charging settings in bios etc.)
