Killer device. This is the route I want to go once my old desktop PC gets obsolete. Also some of the emulators that ran poorly, like Citra were more of a software issue rather than hardware: Open GL is terrible on AMD on Windows. We have to wait until Vulkan is released or run the emulator on Linux.

300 bucks for all this? What a time to be alive. I mean I am rediscovering the gamecube catalogue atm and if you add PS2 and Wii to that, what an excellent emulation box you got there. Also some light PC games like Hades and Hollow Knight to boot. This is spetacular.

I attribute that to your military background. I refer to your Steam Deck and Odin guides regularly. I apologize for not always remembering to "like" your videos I watch.

This chip was used by a then cheap Aya Neo handheld. And yes, the company was called Aya back then, and their first handheld was called Neo, and back then was actually 2 years ago. This is definitely exciting time for the emulation fans.

Thanks for the very informative video.
I'm building an arcade from an old ms pacman cabinet and I was hesitating upgrading from an i5 to a ryzen 5. This absolutely proved me the upgrade is justified. While 90% of mame games were playing well, there was still a portion with some 3D that was struggling.
I did not buy the model reviewed though as this would be largely overkill for my purpose, but found a pc that had a Ryzen5 2400G. I watched some video and seeing how it still easily handled Wii U emulation, I'm pretty positive it will be powerful enough for any mame games :). My upgrade is on the way!!
Thanks for your insightful reviews as always!
By the way, is it me or Ryzen5 prices has dropped substantially ? I remember PCs with Ryzen5 being at least 200$ dollars more expensive not too long ago...

I think it's worth saving the extra hundred dollars or so for a Steam Deck over this, however for the price this really isn't bad for those willing to compromise on resolution and frame rates for modern games. As for emulation, this is incredible.

It's really hard to understand where each of the devices you review stand relative to eachother.
Can you place make a bar graph showing each systems relative performance for a given game.
This is standard in PC hardware reviews, like gpus or cpus.
But instead of components you can put single board computers into the chart.
For games that are cross arch (like emulation) you can even include android devices on the bar graphs.
I think that would really elevate your content and help your viewers make informed decisions about what device to purchase for the games they want to play.
    thanks!

I feel like this could have a lot more potential, if the TDP and fan speed could be unlocked. I have a laptop with the same processor (4500U) and the poor cooling means that even if i go to 30W it quickly throttles. In a mini PC, with a better fan and cooling, I'm sure it could easily sustain over 40-50W, as many other mini PCs already do. Could make for a significant 20-30% improvement just through doing this alone.

I hope Russ and Taki Udon talks about the Pimax Portal like ETA did earlier today. It looks good. I'd take it over the Odin and Razer Edge but I'd take the Steam Deck over them all.
I'm starting to think the Switch Lite is my favorite gaming device of all-time and not my modded Vita slim. I just play it more. I'm more of a Sony fanboy but Nintendo really does make more highly replayable games and systems.
Sony has sorta become more Westernized since the PS3 days. Buying American studios. The difference between Xbox and PlayStation only gets blurred. Sony lost their Japanese charm while Nintendo still has it.
I absolutely love Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I think those are the best entries for their series. It's no longer Super Mario World and Double Dash for me but I still adore those two.
I'm thinking of getting Nintendo Online. Not the $49.99 Expansion Pak. I'll buy Mario Kart Booster Pass separately. I want the $19.99 to have cloud saves. Don't need the NES and SNES games. My smartphones and Vita can cover all that.
I want cloud saves because once the Switch 2 or whatever they call it gets released perhaps by next year and it's likely backwards compatible to Switch 1, I want my saves to still be there once I download my Switch games onto the Switch 2. I do not want to get 3-stars for every cup on MK8D again on 200cc. A PITA.
I think $20 per year is extremely reasonable. Then again, who knows how long until Nintendo closes shop for the Switch? It might get much easier for any of the Switch models to get hacked by then. Then we'll be downloading every game for free from a backup repository like we can for the Vita. I just don't want to lose my save files.
My Switch Lite will be my favorite handheld until the Switch 2 Lite ever comes out by 2026 or so. Kinda makes me sad. Happened to my PSP after I got the Vita. I'll probably be trading in the Switch Lite by then once the Switch 2 completely replaces it for me. But in tech, everything does get better and the newer devices will replace the older ones like the Vita did to the PSP.

Yes, as I discuss near the end of the video there are other options out there. The 5600H model they just announced is a bit better performing than the 5600U (at least in benchmarks) and its pre-sale price is $10 less than this one. There's always something around the corner!

@@RetroGameCorps I know. It's a great time to have all these choices. I just grabbed a 5600u PC for $288 which I thought was an amazing deal.

400 dollar/euro and you have a steam deck. And you can play everything. :)

That is a great price. Just needs a better GPU.

These are cool but to me it’s always seemed like a steam deck with a dock would be a better buy

Please, someone just give us a mini PC with a 7840HS already... Not some old junk like this one.

The chipsets and motherboards are still expensive for AM5. A 7840HS mini PC would probably be in the $1000 range if it was released right now. Those machines will happen, but I wouldn't expect them at a reasonable price for several months.
If they did release them now, and this review was about one of them, this whole comments section would be people complaining about the price.

@@harleyn3089 I don't mind paying that price for an emulator PC that I could keep for a very long time.

Bruh, the benchmarks leaked last month for that chip and based on those that chip isn't going be nearly the 300 bucks this one is. More importantly it's not even released yet, there's not a single product with that released yet. These things aren't immediately magic'd out of thin air. The manufacturing process takes time.
