    Mannnnnnnn I've had my Odin 2 for a year and it's my favorite handheld and arguably best system I've ever owned. 7 inch and OLED is really making me consider upgrading

    Wow!
    The size comparison between the Odin 2 Portal and the Retroid Pocket 5 finally put my mind at ease for my RP5 purchase.
    I didn't realize the size difference would've been that big. The Odin 2 Portal is too big for my needs.
    I just wish the RP5 had the left thumbstick on top. It would've been perfect otherwise.

    Glad I pre-ordered/backed the Portal. Shaping up to be a near perfect device for my needs. And the ergo/grip issue will be solved pretty quickly via a few Etsy sellers I'm sure. Some easy on/off grips is almost a good thing imo, keeps the device slimmer/lighter and more portable.

    I wish companies would start adding two extra front action buttons to these devices. They don't need to be aligned; a layout similar to the N64 or the original Xbox controller would work fine. This would be really helpful for systems like the Sega Saturn, Sega Genesis, and even the N64.

    • @Kajukota
      @Kajukota ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I know it's not a handheld, but if you are looking for an amazing controller with those two extra buttons (plus four back grip buttons) the Vader 4 Pro is probably the best choice. I'm not sure how it would work with an android device, but it's easy to set up in windows.

    This vid almost feel like the device is so darn near perfection, that you had to choose something negative to always go back to (ergos). And if the ergonomics really proves to be this devices only negative side, than lets be honest, its not negative at all. Ayn knows very well that a bunch of companies out there will make grips for this, so designing it with portability in mind is not a bad idea. You can make a flat device like this or the switch more comfortable, but you cant make a steamdeck any more portable. So yeah it does seem like this device is the ultimate one. At least for now..

    Was thinking about getting this vs getting Retroid Pocket 5. Didnt care about price. Went with RP5 because of the weight (280g). 420g (Odin 2 Portal) seems kind of a lot for a portable handheld device. I wanted to keep weight as close as possible to a PSP weight. Weight was also the main reason I got rid of my Steam Deck. And didn't get Odin 2 Mini because of its bezels, very offputting.

    I'm actually super happy about the flatter design. I have hand issues from years of working using keyboards and playing games. The fatter grips of the steam deck cause my RSI's to flair up since I have to keep my fingers curled in for too long. In general flatter designed devices don't hurt my hands in the same way.

    My takeaway from this impression video is that we are getting near perfect emulation device. If there is a revision or the Odin 3, then it would be wise to fix the back plate with a better/larger grips, better/larger sticks, rog ally or psp style Face buttons size wise, dpad style is fine but a tad larger and lastly snapdragon 8 gen 3 to match Odin 3.

    So after watching the video, I do feel like I still prefer the original Odin 2. I'm not a fan of glass displays and I find more charming Odin's 2 form factor, and I'm willing to sacrifice the better screen for a more affordable price.
    My only problem with these devices is that I'm late to buying them. The switch 2 could come out at any point next year and if I can emulate DS, 3DS and PS2 on top of native switch games, there would be no point in buying the Odin 2 instead.
    PD: Great video and thanks for all you do for this community, you rock 🙌🏻

    Now this has me wondering if the nuances with the EVO, like larger sticks, more ergo grip, slightly higher refresh screen, will make a difference. I commented in Retro Handheld's community post about how odd it is that we're not seeing review units from EVO. This would've been a great opportunity to contrast and compare and if EVO had any additional benefits, it would be good to know at about this time. Generally I'd guess software support would go to Portal while comfort, minus the triggers, would go to EVO but who knows for sure until final units are in hand.

    As always a very good impression video, thanks! Anyway I can’t help but notice that you never ever take into consideration the rumble effect of the devices. Is it possible in next videos to talk just a bit about the strength and the effect of rumble feature? Personally, it has always been a crucial point for choosing where to play a specific game. Thank you Russ for your awesome work!

      Hi, yeah I often don't talk about rumble in my videos. The rumble on this device is good, it feels solid and even across the handheld, and not too strong. There are four tiers of strength: low, med, high, highest, and med is the default. Even though I prefer a very light rumble, the med setting has been perfect for me and I haven't lowered it.

    only thing is if you drop it the glass front will break on the sides and that will ripple into the entire screen. That's whats been going on with the RP5.

    Problem hitting that close with the Max is what you nailed to me, the Steamdeck price. At $550 that means you already get a 512 gb.
    The mid-tier at $400 isn't a horrible price esp. with the 120 display though I could care less about 120. Also having that little bit of extra RAM is nice.

    Now AYN needs to take some of their munnies and invest it in open source forks of Retroarch and Rocknix.
    Perfect BFI and access to Xemu would make the Portal crazy good.

    Well crap, now I’m even more undecided on what color to get. Thought I was going to go black this time around to make the screen more immersive, but that Indigo is so pretty! Ack what do I choose?! 😅

    I’m happy enough with my Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. For now I’m just waiting for a handheld that can play PS3 and 360

    I've been kicking around getting a retro handheld. But for these prices I could get a steam deck and run roms off that. They gotta bring that price down.

    I bought the super fan in indiegogo with screen protector and bag. I hope the screen protector is for the whole glass panel, not just the screen. And I hope the bag is better or the same as the carry bag of the odin 2.

    I do much prefer handhelds with sizable grips like the steam deck but I don’t mind at all and almost prefer handhelds to release flat or nearly flat like this because you can usually add a grip to it like you said but you generally can’t remove the built in grips without buying a 3rd party shell to replace it and a lot of people (me, I’m the person) hate taking things apart and risking damaging it.

    I was actually about to comment that those prices are basically Steam Deck prices, and then you mentioned it. 😂
    Personally I don't think I would choose this over a Steam Deck.

    Hey Russ! Great video as always. Can you give us a comparison between the Odin 2 and the Odin 2 Portal grips please? Are they of similar size and feel or are the Portal grips actually flatter?

    • @RetroGameCorps
      @RetroGameCorps  4 นาทีที่ผ่านมา +1

      I specifically didn't compare the Odin 2 and Portal ergonomics, I still need more time to assess them. At first blush, the Odin 2 has thicker grips and the overall "bulbous" quality to it lends to more naturally comfortable ergonomics, but I also need time to separate my own bias since I've been using the Odin 2 for over a year and it feels second nature to me. It's a highly subjective thing and it needs more time to cook in my brain.

    Thanks for this first test about Odin Portal, it is exactly the one I was waiting for ! Do you think there is a (small) risk to pre-order on the Indiegogo campain or not at all ? Better wait a test about retail product (even if it would be a tad more expensive) ? Many thanks for your lights, Indiegogo campain ends in 38 hours :)
