The fact that Anita can sing a song praising her new home, do a dance that celebrates her heritage, and shit talk her boyfriend, all at the same time, is why she is the absolute queen.

SO TRUE. America's only great if you're white. That's why there haven't been countless millions of black doctors, lawyers, congressmen, scientists, astronauts, CEO's, entrepreneurs, athletes or entertainers in the last 50 years. And, I mean, everybody knows the only things Latinos ever accomplish in America is landscaping and sweeping up hair. Right? That's your point, right? It's only whites that succeed; the millions of successful minorities that make up the backbone of the country; that never happened. Like the song says. Got it!

First it was the Irish, then the Germans, then the Middle Eastern Jews and Christians and then .... and then. It seems like there is a inherent tendency for people to reject someone "not like them." What a shame. The best lessons I learned in life were from people in this country who were "not like me." Our wealth has been built on the backs of eager immigrants who want a better life AND on their children who succeeded beyond anyone's imagination. I was a first generation American born in this country to Russian immigrants and every day I thank the universe my parent were brave enough to break all their family ties and move here. Most of the family left behind died at the battle of Stalingrad in WW II.

It's wonderful how they seem to have a (At least for the times) relatively equal relationship as well. Bernardo was the "boss" of the Sharks and may have called the shots when it was gang-related stuff, but Anita wasn't taking any orders when it came to their relationship. I'm not sure if it was scripted or a genuine reaction from the cleverness of the line and delivery, but the way that Chakiris smiles defeatedly and appreciatively at the "You forget I'm in America" line exemplifies the respect and mutual admiration that they had as a couple.

the best thing they did to this song was to change who is singing. in the broadway version, it is a song between the women. moving it to have it be a dance between the men and the women was masterful. the sexual tension in the music and the acting is phenomenal and makes the song just sooooo much better.

This reflects in what the characters singing about. The male characters all sing about the difficulties of their working lives. The female characters don't sing at all about their work, even if, presumably, they have jobs. Not one of the women is career focused, and they wouldn't be expected to be. I was about 10 years old when I first saw West Side Story, that was 59 years ago. Rita Moreno caught my eye in almost every scene she was in. I didn't realize then why she was so captivating. She was an amazing beauty, an amazing actress, and an amazing dancer. I thought George Chakiris was also great. In my mind they made the movie. Both went on to other rolls but neither received the recognition and opportunities they deserved. I would have liked to have seen them staring in more movies. This scene, Life Is Alright In America, is one of the very best in all the movies I've seen, and that's a lot of movies in over 60 years. I'm looking forward to watching the new version and wondering, will any of today's actors and actresses be as captivating as Rita and George?

From somebody who studed Film Production and who also knows play version well, I disagree. The play is FAR better than the film--they did not capture the electric, spastic, energy of the play (starting with a bland Tony), and I have always wished for a proper remake that capture the play better, so I am hopeful for the new version. As for Best Film Musical, "Cabaret' and "Oliver!" are much better 'Films" (forget the source material, just As A Film) than WSS, which is uneven.

EVERYTHING about this scene holds up more than 60 years on. The style, passion, music, dancing, underlying ideas, trenchant social commentary, tart witty comedy, energy--all of it. A singular dizzying slice of American art in a musical/film of timeless significance.
