Maria's mood in this song is super relatable. After you have a positive encounter with a person you're into, you all of a sudden feel like you're walking on air, like you're the belle of the ball, and it just feels fantastic, and then your best friend might look at you like "what am I going to do with you?"
Such immediate attractions very often turn out to be mere infatuations. But when and if they last, then the experience is indeed very magical and very special. The tragedy is when one suddenly feels that way and the other remains totally unmoved, as was the situation in my case when I was struck speechless by a female cousin who barely noticed that I existed.

Original and the best. Back in the days when gay meant 'happy'. I remember laughing when the modern stage version where Maria sings "....I feel pretty and witty and BRIGHT..." to rhyme with 'night' rather than 'gay' to rhyme with day.
+millertas Hi! That's what I thought for a while, too, but the differing lyrics were because the timeline in the musical isn't the same as the one in the movie. The revival copies the original Broadway show. In the movie, they put I Feel Pretty before Act Two, making it day time instead of night. The reason why the Broadway show had it later is because character death wasn't common in Broadway Musicals at the time, so they tried to keep Act Two very upbeat to contrast the death, with Gee, Officer Krupke and I Feel Pretty in it. So even when it opened on Broadway, they had night and bright rhyming rather than gay and day.
I noticed how she’s wearing the orange and yellow dress (the colors of the Jets) but puts on and off purple (the color of the Sharks) like she’s part of both gangs since she’s Puerto Rican but in love with an American.
Both are Americans. Puerto Ricans are USA citizens from birth even if born in Puerto Rico. The others born in the states are also Americans. So I guess your definition of an American doesn't quite harmonize with reality.

What a lovely pure voice Marni Nixon had. Wished she had more recognition for dubbing Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, The King and I, a nun in The Sound of Music and Maria in West Side Story. A timeless singer x
Weird that she should be considered insane simply for feeling attracted towards a fellow human being. This reminds me of the song Running Bear. In the song, the Indian brave Running Bear and Little White Dove, members of two enemy tribes, fall in love. Of course, being enemies, their love could never be allowed, A raging river separated them, and at the song's conclusion, they swim towards one another and perish holding hands in the river rapids.

How modern and ingenious this film is, music, songs and dances, as if it were a day ago. This is the magic of the 60s, the best years of Mankind after the terrible war, when people understood the value of Life and Love. Amazing film and music that is not possible to repeat. Born in 1962, I carried the love of this film and music all my life.
In a later rendition the lines were changed to "I feel pretty, oh so pretty. I feel pretty and witty and bright. And I pity any girl who isn't me tonight."
Peter LaChapelle I believe that those were the original lines from the stage version and that it was changed because the scene in the movie plays at daytime.
This is such a pure innocent scene, letting out your inner child and exploring and expressing your childish charisma. That really is pretty and charming ❤
I can't believe it took me until now to search this song up. Never saw "West Side Story". Heard them sing it on Anger Management back when, but never thought to look the song up until I saw someone else in an "older video" sing it; joking around. Lol...gotta change things and see the movie.
The 1961 version of West Sde Story is my all time favorite movie. Probably have watched it over 50 times. Far superior to the 20121 Spielberg remake even with all the new technoilogy used for the remake.
@@carlosdavillas1944 I didn’t even know about the remake until recently, and was scared to watch it (especially with Ziegler, who is about as unlikable as they come) so I watched one song and couldn’t stand to watch more 🤦♀️not even close to this version… I cry every time 😭 the characters can’t be remade, imo. I did see a good theatre version, but they shouldn’t have remade this movie.
@@andin916 I saw Spielbergs version of WSS 2 1/2 years ago. It couldn't hold a candle to the orginal 1961 version. I agree with you 100%. Natalie Wood was far superior to Rachel Zegler (who is an awful actress) as Maria as were most of the other actors in the 1961 movie being far better than those in the new movie. I also thought it was a disgrace Spielberg cast Rita Moreno in the new movie. Rita Moreno was exceptional as Anita in the 1961 version but she looked so out of place playing "Docs" widow in the 2021 movie-- a character that wasn't even in the original movie. Also some of the songs in the new movie had slight modifications in the lyrics which didn't help. I did see WSS on Broadway in NYC before the 1961 movie was made and ususally I like the thearter version better than a movie version, but not so with WSS. The original movie was superior to the thearter WSS.

Honestly I've enjoyed the singing, dancing, overall films of both WSS in different ways. But now that I'm looking at clips, the 2021 movie feels so glamorized and I feel like it takes away from the tone/themes. I realized this by looking at the outfits+setting in the last 5 secs of this clip, and saw how Maria's utter joy/magic radiating from this scene is made so much more powerful by the drabness of reality. In the 2021 version, I never quite grasped (visually) how close these marginalized groups were to poverty, which I feel lessens the big bad (threat of homelessness) that is supposed to be the common ground between the two groups.
Really? You never quite grasped how close both groups were to poverty and the threat of homelessness, in the 2021 adaptation, despite the abundant visual cues showing otherwise, i.e., the neighbourhood literally being knocked down? What about the multiple references the adults make to the impending demolishing of the rest of the neighbourhood? I fail to see how Steven Speilberg's West Side Story feels more glamorized, when his film shows parts of West Side that look like they've been hit by the Blitz. Contrast that with the 1961 adaptation, which doesn't actually show any demolished buildings.
The 2021 Spielberg version of West Side Story is not even close to being a better movie than the original 1961 version. Spielberg, even with all the newest technology for movie making couldn't duplicate the authenticity the original version had.
I always thought the girls sang "Keep away from her, gentle Chino" instead of "Keep away from her send for Chino" Have always LOVED the harmony of this song

This is the magic of the 60s, the best years of Mankind after the terrible war, when people understood the value of Life and Love. Amazing film and music that is not possible to repeat. Born in 1962, I carried the love of this film and music all my life.
i love this song, it makes me immediately happy
now SELEGEND GOMEZ re-recorded this😍
Poor Natalie, she died so young... I'm sad that we don't have her with us to this day
I watched this in Spanish class
My class laughed their asses off when she said "gay"
H BAILLARGEON wrote the meaning below . Tell your classmates to get a dictionary (from a book preferably) to view the definitions themselves ;)...
In a later rendition the lines were changed to
"I feel pretty, oh so pretty. I feel pretty and witty and bright.
And I pity any girl who isn't me tonight."
Peter LaChapelle I believe that those were the original lines from the stage version and that it was changed because the scene in the movie plays at daytime.
Nice name
Thedarklord Morgoth Thanks
SALINAAAA ✨
This is such a pure innocent scene, letting out your inner child and exploring and expressing your childish charisma. That really is pretty and charming ❤
Essa música na versão e na Voz de Selena Gomez, está impecável.
Isn't she lovely!! (Absolute high class at its best!!!!)
honestly, I like Rachel Ziegler's version better, but this was so funny and happy
I can't believe it took me until now to search this song up. Never saw "West Side Story". Heard them sing it on Anger Management back when, but never thought to look the song up until I saw someone else in an "older video" sing it; joking around. Lol...gotta change things and see the movie.
Who wasn't in love with Natalie Wood.
Kirk Douglas
@@longmemory1620 No, he was just a little TOO in love
Actual Puerto Ricans
the choreography in this is just *chefs kiss*
here after selena gomez put her version in tiktok !! i cant wait for her to release it !
They had Natalie study Rita's behavior to play this role and I'm.... Rita would've killed this number lmao
Most beautiful star ever!!!!
This never gets old, she is so cute 😂possibly the best scene ever
Saw this show live and this song is such a blast I was laughing the whole way through amazing show from beginning to end
SELENAAAA
I was just watching the movie on Netflix last Saturday Night. I’m excited for Spielberg’s remake. This is one of my favorite songs
Same!
@@joewhitehead3 I know
Anyone else notice her fan doesn't land when she throws it? 1:05
Jacob Hall I’ve seen this movie several times and I’ve never noticed that until you mentioned
I think she threw it off the set-
@@mostlyghostie I think so.
It would have been a distraction, the fan plopping down during the dancing.
Rest in peace natalie wood 😭😭❤️
Natalie Wood was perfect for her role as Maria in the orignal 1961 version of West Side Story
This song plays in my head everytime I pass a mirror and that's on confidence babes
I also just liked my own comment because I didnt realize it was mine and I agreed with whoever wrote it
Natalie Wood one of the greatest actress in USA, we missed her. 6-21-19
BEAUTIFULLY perceptively put, Marina! YES. Over-glamorized, indeed; ypu hit that nail on the head. imho.
The 2021 Spielberg version of West Side Story is not even close to being a better movie than the original 1961 version. Spielberg, even with all the newest technology for movie making couldn't duplicate the authenticity the original version had.
The 2021 version doesn't have the sincere silliness of the original.
I love this movie more and more
Why do I envision Jack Nicholson & Adam Sandler singing this when I watch this now!" ANGER MANAGE MENT"!! 😂❤😂❤
Don't forget it's Marnie Nixon's voice. All honour to her
That is so sweet. She looks great and "feels" great and that is nice.
Rachel Zelger really did this justice. She was just as magical.
I always thought the girls sang "Keep away from her, gentle Chino" instead of "Keep away from her send for Chino"
Have always LOVED the harmony of this song
I love that Selena Gomez is sampling this ❤️
"Anger Management" 🤭😂
Anger management brought me here haha great scene /movie
Incomparable Natalie Wood!
