So so correct!!! The long shot of Glenda Jackson won for "A Touch of Class " won!!! Barbra was totally robbed of that Oscar!!! Politics as usual. The Academy did not want to award her more awards.
Two theories exist to explain her loss: 1). Her unpopularity in Hollywood at the time; and 2). The deletion of scenes--esp. the political ones--undermined her chances.
Hollywood hates her, because she refuses to conform. She “acts too much like a man.” Hence, her total lack of directorial nominations, even though she deserved at least one, for her great work in “Yentl.” I did find it ironic they let her present the Best Director award once, probably because everyone was certain Kathryn Bigelow would become the first female director to win the prize - and she did. (Still think reigning Best Director Danny O’Boyle should have been co-presenter). Like Ida Lupino and a few others, Streisand was a true pioneer, paving the way for other female directors to enjoy the acclaim she was denied. Two other female directors have since taken the prize (although not nominated, Sian Heder directed last year’s best picture winner, “Coda,” and won the Oscar for Best adapted screenplay). I respect Barbra’s talent and determination enormously. Most of the public does, too.

I can understand the feeling. It happened to me with my ex. Your heart breaks but you go on. Everyone could see it and they talked about me after I left. They had all heard about me and seeing us together no one had to ask who I was. It's been a long time and my heart is breaking again as I write this.
I can’t watch this movie without getting choked up. Barb is absolutely stunning and the pain in her eyes when she holds him in this scene is just heartbreaking. I wanted them to end up together. You can see how much he loves her too…just a weak man, and yet she still loves him more than anyone ever will. This movie is still one of my favorites
@@paletteandeasel5167 That happened in my life. I had to give up the one who made my life complete. It was better that way. I'd have gone back in a moment for many years.
Katie always thought Hubble wasted his talents, and you can see it in her eyes when he says he's writing for Television. She's smiling but disappointed. It is a great movie, but in the end, he abandoned his child. He can't come for a drink and face the daughter he abandoned. "How is she?" which is code for "How is she. I don't know because I abandoned her." "Is he a good father since I am a crappy one?!?!" He wants the easy life. The pretty girl who doesn't say a word. The easy job. No trouble, no loses, no principles. And Katie is willing to fight for everything. She's strong, he's weak and that's why it didn't work out.
Hubbell's career was going to be destroyed if he didn't divorce his Commie wife. That's why Hubbell and Katie split up. The Witch Hunts of the early 1950's destroyed many lives, but Hubbell and Katie were not a good match from the very start. I'm writing this from the perspective of old age, but not everyone wants to go through life fighting for everything all the time. It's exhausting and Katie is exhausting. I found her irritating from the opening of the movie, and felt that Streisand and Redford had no chemistry, until this last scene. The dialog is perfect, the actors are pitch perfect. The feeling is still there, though they have led separate lives for many years. Sadness and regret for what they had to sacrifice are also there. When you've had to give up something where you invested your whole heart and soul, but too many forces are arrayed against you, survival demands that you be a Good Loser, regroup, and move on. After Streisand states, "I've had more practice," then tenderly brushes Hubbell's hair off his forehead, and they embrace one last time, I am in floods. This scene is beautifully played and completely devastating.
I have loved someone for over 50 years , I cried when I watched this film in 1973 as I knew it wasn't going to work. Like Barbra in this film , she loved him too much for him to handle. I still cry now ...but with absolute Joy that we shared passion and I have memories
@@13ththeatreco Sorry I don't agree, he did love her but nowhere near as strongly as she loved him. It was obvious from the start that she had the stronger feelings. He looked at her the way he did because of all their shared history.
Even the performance by the actress playing Hubbell's wife is perfect, she appears to shrink before the suddenly rekindled flame emanating between Hubbell and Katie, and never utters a word.
This one scene really exemplifies what the gamut of emotions between a chance meeting between old lovers would likely be. First the surprise and joy of randomly seeing each other again; some small talk, her quick exit, and him not letting her go that easily by following her across the street. Then the heartfelt embrace that rekindled some deep feelings, briefly discussing their child together, and then finally, him recovering and accepting reality by stepping back and cooly saying goodbye as she did the same by ending with the as detached ban the bomb. While inside, the emotional after effects would take much longer to heal. Great scene!
One of the best movies ever made, performed by 2 actors that brought us deep into their characters. The way he looked in that movie is frozen in my mind . . . young and gorgeous.
I cried just watching this scene. So often I've thought about watching this movie again, but then I remember the end and I can't bring myself to watch it. They had such love for each other, but they were just too different. I just told Alexa to play The Way We Were sung by Barbara Streisand. It truly is one of my all time favorite movies. And Robert Redford still takes my breath away when I see him!
Barbra Streisand was so humble in this scene. Such emotion, but very tactful upon seeing her true love again. Especially when their daughter is mentioned. I don't know if I could of held it together in this situation. Her acting is beyond words, such emotion & heartfelt. Will always be a fan of her movies and music! Love her for a lifetime!🎶🎥📀🎬❤️
The thing that makes this scene special is most of us have been there, at least once in our lives...it's truly heartbreaking when 2 people who genuinely love each other can't be together.
sadly, how true. The love of my life passed away September 2022 from leukemia. I love him more and miss him every day. My life goes on, and he's with me in my heart. I love you Bud😔
Robert Redford is very good at capturing deep emotion and passion without saying a word. This scene and ones with Meryl Streep in "Out Of Africa" are good examples of his talent in that regard.
It broke his heart not to be with her and his daughter. Politics destroyed their marriage. They still loved each other that’s why it breaks our hearts too.
@@TheNOGGS Unfortunately, that's sort of the way divorce typically went back then. When people divorced, One parent, got the kid and the other disappeared.
This scene still makes me cry. It is unfair to love and be loved and not be able to be with your love. An unforgettable movie, starring the most beautiful and one of the most talented actor in the world. Redford is an icon, a legend. Eternal.
It amazes me that we know it’s make believe and yet when done well it’s more real than real life. Great writing, great direction, great music and incredibly understated acting. Their eyes convey that feeling of love lost. Love it!!
I just watched the full movie again.. this scene!!! The way he looks at her.. the way he embraces her.. the way he breathes her in.. and the last stare...then says see ya Katie..my God!!! This movie!!! Robert and Barbara that is all I have to say. I am still in tears 😭 lol 😆
My mother loved this movie, I remember so clearly how much she loved it, and most of Barbra Streisand & Robert Redford. It was a great love story. In her memory, I think I will watch this classic!
I was a young U.S. Navy man stationed in England back in 1985 when I watched this movie for the first time. For some reason it really grabbed my heart. Maybe because it was a very lonely time in my life. But I remember crying after this last scene. It broke my heart. Tears come to my eyes, even when I watch it today.
Probably my favorite scene of the whole movie. Boy, their eyes say Everything, no words needed! I lose it every time she sweeps his hair across his forehead. U're lucky if u know true love like that just once, but knowing it & having to give it away is just too much for words. *Cue the song* & I'm balling like a baby!💘
Well said ..v true..I share ur views..fact that, .they still love each other but had to give up on that true love for extraneous reasons ..that adds to agony thousand times..
After seeing the film so many times, I fast forward to this part just so I can cry. The way Hubbell looks at her to say he can't come for a drink is movie bliss.
First saw this now classic love story when I was a young teenager in 75 and how this final scene never fails to reduce me to tears even though I have seen it many times since. I had a massive crush on Robert Redford and Barbara Streisand was superb in this beautiful movie. The title song has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written by the late great Marvin Hamlisch.
Marvin Hamlisch played the piano when Barbra Streisand and James Brolin got married. She even made a cute joke about it that night, saying that "Hamlisch is back doing weddings".
I remember going to the movies and watching this in 1973 - it still makes me cry because he knows he blew it with her and she was the love of his life. Sad, wonderful, movie with beautiful music and with two actors who have been my favorites forever. Barbra and Robert.
He didn't blow it with her. He couldn't measure up to what she wanted him to be. She was the one who didn't know how to just sit back and relax and let life come at you. Had Katy been just a little less intense, they would have stayed together.
I didn't think he blew it, and she wasn't the love of his life. It was an infatuation built on nothing real. The emotion in this scene is just romanticizing the past - its nostalgia. They weren't right for each other.
Saw a woman I loved deeply last year for the first time in 10 years. Chance meeting, we just smiled and looked a little and she nodded and smiled again. It's like two old souls just drifting past each other again, all those times, all that love and affection that once was and now just a memory. Scenes like this make me tear up and I think back to her and wish her well in life.
I remember watching this movie in the theatre when it came out. That scene had everybody in the theatre sobbing. Ohhh, how we wanted them to get back together but we knew it could never happen. What a wonderful movie.
"You never give up, do you?"..."Only when I'm absolutely forced to." Those lines refer to a scene that was cut from the film; Katie realized that in order for Hubbell to keep working in Hollywood, she could either name names before HUAC (the House Un-American Activities Committee) or divorce Hubbell. Since doing the former was unthinkable, she did the latter; it was her ultimate sacrifice - giving up the man she loved so he wouldn't lose his livelihood. Situations like that were common during the blacklisting period of the 50s, and director Sydney Pollock made a big mistake by removing the scene in question. The film still works as a love story thanks to the remarkable chemistry between Streisand and Redford, but it could have been much more - perhaps a Best Picture nominee - if Pollack hadn't lost his nerve.
Господи!! Какой же прекрасный фильм !! Спасибо Всем кснимал фильмы в Голливуде с 1910 по 1998 !!! Спасибо Барбре Стрейзанд и Роберту Редфорду . Спасибо за прекрасное кино !!!
A beautiful finale and a pristinely filmed scene. I especially like the small, telling moments such as when Hubbell's wife clutches his arm which draws Katie's attention and brings her back to the reality. Also, when they embrace at the end, Katie's eyes are closed but open at the moment she realizes that he is embracing her as tightly as she is him. Barbra's eyes sell this scene and display her emotions perfectly.
Something must have been done with lighting or in post production because her eyes truly pop throughout this scene. Sure she was born with big blue eyes, but here they positively glisten.
You just Know that the reason he couldn't go for drinks Wasn't because of the " Politics" of it but because he still Loves her and he couldn't bear it... I ADORE THIS Movie!!! xoxoxo I SOOO Wished that they had ended up together!!
@@harperstacey9604 They have both moved on in their lives. But seeing his kid once, knowing it will only be the one time, and he will mean nothing to her, just “ an old friend of Mommy’s” would break his heart. That’s why he can’t come.
@@harperstacey9604 Child support wasn’t really a thing until 1975. This movie takes place in the 1940s and 1950s. Plus it’s a movie, of course. Apparently they made a lot of cuts in the film before it was released, so they went from happily married to divorced in, like, 2 scenes. Didn’t make a lot of sense.
This scene was pure iconic as regards to have closure on a past relationship!! I think most of us would of been able to have that experience of closure walk away smile and have no regrets!!! Pure magic
A decade after _The Way We Were_ was released, Robert Redford contacted screenwriter Arthur Laurents to discuss the possibility of collaborating on a sequel where Hubbell and his daughter, a radical like Katie, would meet and the complications that would ensue. Ultimately, the idea was dropped.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie. I must have seen it a million times and I've cried a million times! My theory is that whenever he said "See ya Katie," he never expected to see her ever again, but he always did. So I KNOW they ended up getting together again, I just know it lol
I remember watching this with my mother I was maybe 15 . When this scene happened I flipped out . I said “ mom but they love each other so much … it’s so obvious ! Why do they torture each other by not being together? My mother said “ sometimes love isn’t enough “ . I was so angry I said “that’s the dumbest thing ever love conquers all mom “ She said “When you are a grown woman you will realize that life can be complicated and love doesn’t always conquer all “. She added it’s wonderful when it does but sometimes it can’t and this movie shows that perfectly . To this day this scene makes me cry and especially now because I had to let go of someone who I loved for self preservation . Great movie this scene is in my Top 10 movie scenes of all Time .
"When you are a grown woman you will realize that life can be complicated and love doesn’t always conquer all. She added it’s wonderful when it does but sometimes it can’t and this movie shows that perfectly". Beautiful words!!!
I will never forget when Robert Redford said it to Barbara Streisand for the first time in the movie, beautiful, loud laughter broke out in the cinema, when he said it for the third time in front of the fireplace, there was a deep silent silence in the auditorium. .. This is art, that's why it's worth making a film.
⭐ Robert Redford is a class act. He cares about animals & the environment, and does something about it. He takes his work seriously, but doesn't have the typical Hollywood ego. He's intelligent and articulate. And not to mention drop-dead gorgeous and charismatic. On a scale of 1 to 10, he's a 30...!!! ⭐
Such a great film. I never appreciated Redford's acting at the time, but re-seeing this scene...and Streisand! Wow. When camera's weren't afraid to do elongated close-ups.
As much as I wanted them to get back together, this ending is the right ending. There is so much more emotional impact to watch them experience their love that never died and that they can never have again. Sniff.
I was on the Fifth Avenue bus when they were filming this. My friend got off to see Robert Redford. She said he was a "peach:, Can we talk about Barbara? How beautiful! Her eyes, her skin, her figure, her hair.
Can’t even watch this scene anymore. The heartbreak. The pain. The so true love. He couldn’t be a radical. He chose the easy privileged way. She couldn’t be fake. What a tragedy. The hurt will never go away.
My dad didn’t like Streisand very much. But when he saw TWWW, he was blown away by her acting - he said that her whole character was revealed when they hug and she closed her eyes, and then reopened them with that blink of resignation.
It's just acting Redford had reservations working with her because her reputation has exceeded expectations, additionally Streisand was privileged in that sense because no Jewish women made it big on the big screen then or now , Redford natural blonde hair was also unusual then and even now ,the fact that Streisand may have never experienced true love in her life is evident since she give no birth to a child regardless that she has proclaimed being in love and married ,if you are not ready to be a parent or except the responsibility that comes with it well then a person in psychological sphere never grows up as they hold onto the illusion a little longer then the average that by achieving success material success will compensate everything else ,the essence of time teaches us to reflect and if you can make amends because to be honest with yourself is where freedom truly begins.
That movie means so much to me. i watched it with my mum when i was very little. I watched it through love and heartbreak. I heard so many projections of different people what these two ment or not ment to eachother. Everyone reads a bit of their own tragedy into it. I personally think she never felt pretty enough for him, while actually he wasnt couragious enough for her❤ (of course very much connected to my own story)
bohemia....one of the significant lines is when she asks him, "i'm not your style, am I?" He says no, you're not my style. Heartbreaking. Love is not enough. yes he was shallow. Thanks for the info about RR wanting the character to be flawed. Good explanation.
I saw TWWW in the theatre with my mom when I was 9. I have the same imprint as well. As a kid, I always wondered why she didn't stay with him. As an adult, I reminisced about the movie and knew she was drawn more to her own causes/life. Had such huge impact on my own.
@@trodgers458 I don't know about that. The never ending debate about why BS and RR couldn't stay together. I think that scene in which she asks him, I'm not your style, am I says it all. In the end, he went back to Beekman St and his new "lovely" girl is the straight haired girl style. While BS went a natural with curly hair. I think if he would have tried harder and forgot about style, they could have stayed together. It was him.
"But i'm a very good looser" All because she had more practice as if practice makes perfect in this case I love this movie to pieces They don't make them like this anymore
She was a good sport. Even her eyes had touches of lightheartedness and good wishes to them. And so sad, but life goes on aspect in the hustle and bustle of New York. Just a slice in time. The perfect parting to last a lifetime.
I remember as a teenager leaving the cinema blubbering after seeing this movie with ‘Memories’ playing in the background. Loved both of them in this but have to admit I had such a crush on Robert Redford.
I remember seeing this scene in reruns as a little kid... I didn't know what romantic love was, however there was something in their interaction that made my heart swell and a tear in my eye...great acting by both.
Seeing this clip makes my heart heavy...it was so well done....just a few days ago had a closure conversation on facebook with my first love from 30 years ago....his mother made him break up with me when we were young over religion and it broke my heart n a way I never got over. He apologized and we both agreed we had regrets. Now he is divorced with 2 kids and I am happily married with a daughter. He is living with his mother and still religious and I finally accept we never would have worked out, but I will still always love and miss him.
One of the BEST final scenes in all of cinema. The film certainly had its share of plot holes and slow plot developments. But dang, the final five minutes pretty much resuscitate the entire movie. Notice how all the emotions are packed into the eyes of both Redford and Streisand. And yes, I do believe Brad Pitt is the love child of Robert Redford.
I certainly do not agree that the film 'had it's share of plot holes and slow plot developments' !! It's one of the best films of all time with an excellent storyline that had me (and obviously millions of others) totally gripped. The film did NOT need resuscitating, it was excellent throughout and the ending was superb. I find your comment strange !

Can’t agree more with you about why he wasn’t in his daughter’s life, but Hubble never stuck around to do the hard work or have uncomfortable conversations like Katie was willing to.
There is nothing more painful than still loving someone so profoundly after so many years.

Even the performance by the actress playing Hubbell's wife is perfect, she appears to shrink before the suddenly rekindled flame emanating between Hubbell and Katie, and never utters a word.
Greatful to have been around when movies like this were fashionable. This intimate quality is sadly in short supply today.
Now, I'm crying. I knew I shouldn't read these comments, but, I had to. ❤

@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
Me too, this movie slayed me when I first saw it back then as a teen. Still does…stirs so many emotions….
Marvin Hamlisch played the piano when Barbra Streisand and James Brolin got married. She even made a cute joke about it that night, saying that "Hamlisch is back doing weddings".

Hi Nancy how are you doing
He didn't blow it with her. He couldn't measure up to what she wanted him to be. She was the one who didn't know how to just sit back and relax and let life come at you. Had Katy been just a little less intense, they would have stayed together.
Qual o nome desse filme..em portugued
Her political CRAP is what ruined it!
This scene was the most important scene of the movie. Absolutely heartbreaking and human. ❤️

It's a heart- breaking scene because we all knew that they should have been together. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Nope
I hope not.
I also sob in the scene where she asks him to stay until the baby is born.
Thank you for sharing this

A beautiful finale and a pristinely filmed scene. Also, when they embrace at the end, Katie's eyes are closed but open at the moment she realizes that he is embracing her as tightly as she is him.

@@jetahoxha4611 I've been a huge Barbra S fan for years. In casual conversation a coworker asked a question about The Way We Were. I said I'd never seen it. She was in shock. She said how can you be a major fan without having watched it. I did days later and found out what I'd been missing my entire life...one of the most epic & sweeping love stories of all times.
Can’t agree more with you about why he wasn’t in his daughter’s life, but Hubble never stuck around to do the hard work or have uncomfortable conversations like Katie was willing to. After all, he didn’t have to. That is one of the themes of the movie, I suppose. IDK, I think they both loved each other very much at one time. Love how movies can stir emotion!
@@tamaravaughan503 Yes, they did love each other, but I will always maintain that she loved him more. It was so obvious throughout the whole film. He was always too ready to give up. Absolutely great film !
One of the most romantic films of all time. It always gets to me. I watched it again recently and I still cried.
THIS SCENE ALWAYS GOES STRAIGHT TO MY HEART!
💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
I was 15 when this movie opened in the theaters. I had never cried so much and so uncontrollably over a movie before in my life- it just broke my heart. I remember watching it with my Mama. After it was over, I asked her if she didn't just LOVE it? And she said, "Those two are the stupidest people I've ever seen a movie. Love like that rarely comes along and they just threw it away, and over what??!!!" (haha)
Brilliant. Your mom was so right!!!!!
I agree
wise woman, your Mama.
Yes, exactly! This is the best comment imo
Same! Watched it as a teenager in the cinema and just couldn't stop thinking about it! Lovely to watch this scene again ♡
After all this time, I cannot watch this scene without crying
This is the greatest love story of all time.
Me too!
Me too
I just cant help laughing
Me too 💗
It's heart breaking when you finally find that last piece of the puzzle for your life, and know matter how much you want, it just doesn't fit.
Anymore.
That's a great description of the movie. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
