      why would you stop every 60 miles? the car has a range of 300 miles+. German auto industry having a tough time keeping up with the EV movement accelerated by Tesla.@ufster81

    • @stinger15au
      @stinger15au 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ufster81 a 3hour nonstop trip on the autobahn at 130mph is perhaps one of the only things a ev cannot do....yet. but neither can the majority of ice cars.
      At 130mph your fuel usage must be abysmal, even an efficient 5 series diesel get about 15mpg at 130mph. Most performance cars would be under 10mpg. With a 19 gallon tank that's 285miles.....assuming were topped off and ran to zero.
      390miles in 3 hours would take at least a 110L tank, which no fuel efficient car has.
      So stop talking bs

      1 - We're comparing EV with ICE, so your comment is completely irrelevant.
      2 - How are you comparing realistic specs of a car that can't be bought yet with a car that was out in more than a year?
      3 - The Tesla Model 3 is the first of its kind when it comes to sort-of affordable all-electric for the general market, if the Kona EV does better then I'm not surprised. Elon would love to see that happens because that is his goal.

      So cheap! But so annoying to have to sit around for 20-45 minutes to charge tbh. Im a fan for daily commutes but not a fan for long road trips. Sometimes you just want to keep going after a super quick bathroom or coffee break and not wait for what seems like zeeons

      CWEJ_ 99 all new Tesla owners who use a referral code get 6 months of free supercharging, what car company gives you 6 months of free gas? Also Tesla stated that they’re working on faster supercharging so it should take less time to charge in the future. Also the brakes last way longer some don’t need replacing until after 125,000 miles. Just wanted to add that to the discussion. :)

      @@carljr.99 I respect that; however, as someone who loves driving, technology, and drives 60+ miles a day, I would gladly take a tesla over my 2017 ford fusion. I have a tune on my fusion, no warranty anyway. I have to deal with oil changes every 5,000 miles. With a Tesla, you can wake up in the morning with a full "tank". You don't need to stop at a gas station every 4 or 5 days to fill up and pay $40-50. On the other hand, range does drop off when it's cold, and I don't know whether or not I'd have range anxiety.

    Thanks for the video. We have taken several longer trips in our Model 3. Longest was 2,000 miles on vacation through California and back up Big Sur and the coast back to Oregon. We try to time our charging around lunch, dinner or coffee stops to make the charging time more efficient since we would be stopping anyway. And in doing so, we've found some really really good restaurants. And we always let them know we stopped because they are next to a SC.

    Thought I'd share my Model 3 thanksgiving trip. I drove a little over 600 miles; the big difference is that I drove across New York and back. The trip out was a steady 15 degrees!! We had seat heaters for part of the trip and the cabin heater going the whole way, 4 people and luggage. Needless to say my range suffered. Had to charge twice on the way out.
    The cold also slows down super charging. I was getting 20-30kw when it was 15 out. On the way back it warmed up to 45 and I was seeing 60-90kw.
    Average for my whole trip was 325wh per mile. Cold hurts range a lot, but other than that, zero issues.

    I’m driving gas for a while and gassing up is horrible, my Ford Focus has a warranty replacement needed on the charge cable which may catch fire! I have so far waited 2 months for basically an extension cord an Ford ax’s usual is dead slow. It takes 20 minutes to gas up if their is no line but I got spoiled with owning an electric for a year plus and never needing more than 2 second to plug it in and never stopping for gas, service, repair, tune ups etc etc that drive me nuts now back on gas. I was glad to run my Lincoln for a while though as it was badly neglected.

    Used google maps to compare a trip from San Diego to San Antonio in Tesla's highest range vehicle vs my 2012 BMW 535i. The Tesla would take just over 35 hours and 1800+ miles (have to follow the charging stations) while my BMW would take a tick over 18 hours and about 1350 miles. I'll take the 500 mile and 17 hour savings any day of the week and twice on Sunday! Those 17 hours are time I could be spending with my family and not sitting at a charging station! Can't buy back time!

  • @joetripp123

    Great trip review. The only caution i would add is storing the charging cable (MCU) in the frunk. I have a friend who couldn't open their Model 3's frunk and had to get service. I've seen at least two other videos of people with this problem too. I myself haven't had any problems with my frunk but it would suck to get to my parent's house and not have access to it. For now I'm not putting anything in there I can't live without for a while. Tesla will get it sorted out quickly as always and in a month I won't worry about my frunk access.

    I just finished driving 3,500 miles for Thanksgiving, in my old, defective-engine Prius. So this is by far "worst case" on a Prius.
    (150,000 miles. The engine has a defect but Toyota so far won't do a recall. They DID do a recall on the same engine in the same year Camry. Still fighting that one. :( )
    My trip was also quite different: cold winter, 60 mph (!) winds in Wyoming, crossed four mountain ranges (the Continental Divide and the Cascades -- both twice).
    So for Andy: 2 trip starts, 4 stops on the way, average 25 minutes per refill, 1000 miles total. That's six segments (167 miles per segment on average.) At 25 minutes per fill average after an average 167 mile segment, that's 15 minutes of wait per 100 miles of driving.
    For me: 1 trip start, 11 stops, 5 minutes average per stop. $236.42 total gas cost (6 cents a mile.) That includes me paying taxes covering 100% of my road costs AND 100% of Andy's :)
    So my 12 segments (292 miles average each) involved 11*5 = 55 minutes of fuel filling. At 5 minutes per fill average (really much less except for two stations with verrrrrry slooooow filters ;) )... that's less than 2 minutes of wait per 100 miles of driving.

      @WebbedPete - Comparing a Prius to a Tesla Model 3 is similar with comparing a hamburger with a Filet Mignon.
      Who the heck wants to know what a Prius can do on any trip ? Actually, who the heck want to know anything about a Prius ?

    • @WebbedPete
      @WebbedPete 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@htn1254 In this case the Prius is the fillet. ;) Far less time sitting around waiting until we can get back on the road.
      My total wait on 3500 miles of driving was under an hour.
      If he had done the same trip, he would have had 15 min * 35 = 525 minutes of on-the-road delay. Almost nine hours.
      We did the trip with four road overnights. Without question, it would have required an entire extra day in a Tesla 3.
      That's an extra day wasted away from my granddaughters and daughters, and unable to see the sights other than hang out at the filling station.

      As Andy noted, everyone has different parameters. Tesla 3 is great for what it is. Same as other vehicles. We all need the humility to realize no one solution fits everyone.
      If I wanted to revel in the driving experience, I would look for a modern replacement for my friend's Lotus Europa John Player Special (JPS). Almost as quick on the straight as a record Tesla 3 run... But it cornered like nothing else. My friend took me for a spin in a rural area so we wouldn't scare anybody. 90 degree turns on a narrow 2 lane (1 ea direction) road. 50-60mph easy. Had to have amazing timing! But then he drove at Watkins Glen 😊

    • @aslye
      @aslye  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you're charging at a Supercharger, the lower your battery is the faster the charge rate is. Once the battery hits a certain charge and gets closer to 100% the charge rate slows down. So I only charge enough to get me to the next charging stop along the route (or enough to get to my destination to charge). No need to charge past 80% in most cases unless you absolutely need the extra range to reach your next stop.

    Well, given that my new 2013 Camry LE costed me $20k (smart dealer research gives you a noticeable discount from MSRP), I wonder how many decades it would take to drive for the total cost to get even. Let's compare with Andy's long range $50k Model 3. With current low gas prices and fuel efficient 4-cylinder Camry (30 mpg overall because of a lot of longer trips in my case) how many years I have to drive until I spend $30k on gas? Let's count: 20,000 miles a year, that's 20,000/30 = 667 gallons of gas a year. If gas price is $2 per gallon, like I see around me most of the time, then it is 667 * 2 = $1334 spent on gas per year. Now divide $30k by $1334 and you get about 22 years 6 months to get even. Nah, I'm not going to wait that long. Going to stay with my Camry until Tesla lowers their price from $50k to $25k, while at least keeping same 300 mile range and recharging time. Only then it will make economic sense to switch to Tesla in my case. Hopefully, this will happen around 2030 or so. Good luck, Elon!

      Teslas (or any EV) are great to sleep in because you can leave climate control on while you sleep and don't have to worry about carbon monoxide poisoning and the climate control works silently since an engine doesn't have to run to generate heat or drive an alternator to power a compressor.

    I'm just wondering if a high wattage 110-220v step-up voltage regulator would work better than plugging straight into 110 outlet? Has anybody ever tried that? Would that double the charge from 5 to 10 miles per hour?

The problem is that you could not draw enough amps without starting a fire and burning down the house. If someone is letti g you charge for free it is always a good idea to not burn their house down.

    Took a second look....None of the math works. Leaves 283 miles on charge.. goes 194 miles... That leaves 89 miles.... Then he leaves and car says 223 . Hmm 134 not 177 but that's normalizing around what the car initially said vs what it said after charging..so simple math says going 1000 miles takes 260 minutes of charging.. or 4 hours and 20 minutes. But that's using your numbers pal..

    • @aslye

      As a Long Range Model 3 owner I’m always going to get roughly 300 “non Supercharging” miles right from the get-go when I leave my house on a 90-100% charge. Based on my electricity rate that’s less than $5. On this trip I left with 280 miles of range and returned with 30 miles of range so that’s 250 “non Supercharging” miles traveled. 490 miles were “Supercharging” miles. The remaining 250 miles were essentially free as a result from charging while I slept either at my sister‘s house or my hotel. This video is showing the fact that EVs have the distinct advantage of being able to charge not only en route but at the destination while the owner sleeps. I'm assuming when people take 1,000 mile trips they're not sleeping in their car. Charging at your destination for free isn't uncommon with EVs, which is something that cannot be done with a gasoline vehicle.

    • @baddgcarma
      @baddgcarma 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's not free nor is your free time used for charging. Also I expect people to drive straight through on a 500 mile leg. your math is terrible and confirmation bias is showing. Be more realistic. First You made your sister foot the bill. I travel 1400 miles round trip to my sister. I do 700 on the way there and do not spend a night cause my car needs to charge ”for free" while I pay for a hotel room (was doing 500 miles on a go too tough or you had to stop to charge which I am guessing the hotel was around 100). But again the point is your time should mean something and your review should mean something. By your review I should expect to want 2 hours charging plus foot the bill for another 100 to 200 on a hotel room and tack on an extra day or two to make the trip. Just saying but you're so fanatical I doubt you can reason why your current claims are no where near accurate

    • @aslye
      @aslye  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@baddgcarma Haha I didn't spend the night at my sister's because I "needed to charge". I spent the night because I love my family and want to spend time with her and my niece and nephew since they live 500 miles away. You should try spending time with your family more often and staying a night with them when you visit. It may help you find some happiness :) I always spent a night or two with my family when I road trip to see them even when I drove a gross gasoline car. And my sister "footed" the ever so expensive $3 extra on her electricity bill which she was happy to do because I spent two days traveling on the trip to see her. Also, most Tesla destination chargers at hotels and such will let Tesla owners charge for free even if they're not patrons of the facility as long as we call ahead and ask them. So it's not like I had to pay to stay at a hotel just to charge. My point is the same as I mentioned above: EVs (especially Teslas as of right now) have a clear advantage over gasoline vehicles when it comes to cost of traveling. And when my Tesla is charging overnight at a place I was already planning to stay I consider that "no added extra time" - and that's another big advantage that EVs have over gasoline vehicles.

    • @baddgcarma
      @baddgcarma 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aslye you don't get it. Either your that fanatical or just mentally small and my issue is people try to evaluate Tesla to see if it fits and I look at you as misleading people by what you don't say to get something for free. Again the Point is this.you tried to intimate you can drive 1000 miles only charging 25 minutes with 5 stops. It's a lie. You will spend more than 2 hours at a charger if you want to travel 500 miles. That's not insignificant. 4 hours of your time probably doesn't mean anything to you but 4 hours of my time does to me. That's the trade off. That's what people want to know. People like my dad who are old and see this review get mislead. You think spending 20 bucks vs 100 means much to people who spend 55 to 65k on a car. No but time sure as hell matters. Your glasses are just green tinted not looking at an actual emerald City.

      @@baddgcarma I think there's a disconnect between what I'm trying to get you to understand or you just choose to not accept it. The fact is I took a 990 mile road trip to visit my family. I only stopped 4 times to Supercharge at an average of 25 minutes per stop for a total of $12.88. The other charging was done at my destination while I slept. That's what I conveyed in the video. I documented it exactly how it happened. If you choose not to accept that, then there's nothing else I can do. Have a good day.
