    This is a solid, well-built and nicely finished Tudor Black Bay Pro Homage, but it might not be the best one available. Nor is it the cheapest.
    Still, if you like the look of it and want to try it for yourself, feel free to use the links below and help out the channel:
    WatchDives affiliate link: bit.ly/lumepip...
    AliExpress Affiliate link: s.click.aliexp...
    The Sugess BB Pro homage on AliExpress (affiliate link): s.click.aliexp...
    Let me know if there's anything I've missed (there normally is...) or if there's another alternative. Also, Sugess is a needlessly difficult brand name to pronounce for my pathetic lips.
    Thanks for watching!

    Literally just added a San martin homey to my cart as I’m thinking of getting one to scratch the look itch. I did get a pagani that looks like the blue Pelagos and it’s well over half price if the sm, but it’s quite disappointing for a pagani. To me, the prices don’t justify choosing one of them over a pagani or another ali brand, and I’ve had two San gave one away, and had qc issues (not deal breaking) with both. But definitely you are going to get a much better watch with them, but my qc issues and follow up with the San martin store was disappointing to say the least…..great video….for now I have one in my cart and may pull the trigger instead of trying to save for one, and sugess I will definitely check out. Thanks for the video!

      Nice one, mate! I think once you get stung once, it's hard to forgive (at least in my case), so wouldn't blame you for not giving them another go. But I also reviewed their other GMT Pepsi homage and thought that was great. I sometimes see them pop up for good prices on FB Marketplace and eBay and stuff, so sometimes I just buy there, too - that way at least I avoid going above the £200-£250 range for them. But with the Sugess being cheaper than this (I think about £195 in the Ali Discovery promo), I might have to get one, too!

    I only ever pick up San Martin watches during sales, they are definitely charging a little more and more for not that much better quality increase. So during the sales with coupons, coins and all the other codes they're usually well under 200 dollars, which is very reasonable. So its usually best to wait many months before buying one, especially best to wait for a V2 because most of the V1 have something that could be improved.

    Good vid...I agree...some of the shine has come off of SM as their prices have gone up. If they could stay around The $200-$250 range, they would really be the diamond they use to be. Some of their models now go well about $350 or $400...They are well made but as the prices go up, there becomes more competition and original designs....still, Im a Fan Martin as well....

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice one, Brian! I think the models they offer at that price should come with Swiss movements, and I think most do, but now they're selling watches with the YN55 movement for, like, £200-£250. Ditto with NH35s. I can remember their Water Ghost (Subby homage) models being about £135 at one point, still great SM finishing and the Seiko movement. Now those sort of prices are reserved for their clearance models. If I'm going above £200, I suppose a GMT movement is OK, but above £300 and I want Swiss, whcih isn't always a guarantee with SM now. Plus, I mean, some of the blemishes on the handset on this example would've been an anomaly with SM watches at one point. Will it stop me buying more? Nah, but I hope they see this and others making videos whinging and maybe do something about it! 😅

(Can you tell I'm a Tudor fan?) But I think SM's logo is always best applied. And as for the Sugess, part of me is worrying about reviewing it because I'll have to say the word 'Sugess' a lot 🤣

  • @watchluster

    SM pricing is getting out of hand, there are brands doing equal work and providing just as much value but SM with it's reputation is trying to go big and well let them try, as consumers you can decide and tell them to F it up their behind cuz it's just crazy how much increase they've put on their watches in the past year.
    At one point it's just not a value conscious option and I'd at that point just save up for the real deal in more cases than not. I'd never buy a TUDOR nor a TUDOR homage so I'll pass on this specific watch. Cheers and way to keep it real.

    Got this exact San Martin (applied indices & hex logo) in the last sale for $233.87. At that price I think they are still worth it ... however at the $350-$400 price tag I too would begin to reconsider.
    San Martin stand out in the homage market for excellent finishing, good solid specs and few QC issues (I don't think any brand is totally QC issue free including Seiko and Rolex).
    For reference I have two San Martin's but am by no means an automatic fan boy - like every watch they have to catch my interest stylistically, have good specs and have multiple good reviews.
    Sugess wasn't available at the time ... so it is tough for me to compare.

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ditto, mate. I've had QC issues with SM's in the past myself - the Pepsi GMT bezel was misaligned, for example. I think we got used to near-flawless execution from them and now a combo of little things out of place and rising prices have led me to checking out the likes of Sugess and Seestern, and to a lesser extent other Ali brands, before SM.

    I have the black pvd full lume seestern monster. That thing has a great finish and i love it.
    I have the Seestern GS diver and it had some issues which i fixed, clasp that wasnt as good as the bracelet and tue bezel was very light. Some alignment issues in the dial unfortunately.
    I have the sugess moonphaser master and that thing is implacable, the leather strap was ok and the clasp was flimsy, quickly replaced it with a strapcode mesh.

I don't have watches which cost over 2K, have no need to look fake. But I appreciate the design and hard work of many companies, providing us with something original.

      Every watch makers copied from other watch makers, it started started way back... Rolex started making dive watches in 1954, and the Blancpain 50 fathoms came out in 1953. However Squale were making dive watches in 1950 before them both, I dont know if anyone made dive watches before that, but what is sure is Rolex was in catch up and to some extent making a homage, so it what it is..

I think people fall one side of the fence or the other on the homage thing and you're on the other side to those who like them, and that's completely fair enough! If we all agreed on these things, the world would be a pretty boring place. I think there's value to be had at every level and (possibly unfortunately) a lot of value at the budget end of things is from the homage brands, at least in terms of build quality and finishing.

    I have both a SM, a Sugess and a Seestern, and the build quality is pretty good on all of them considering the price, my Sugessis probably the least impressive of the three, but still a well made watch. The Seestern I bought in a covid fever haze, after watching your video and feeling absolutely terrible about myself, because Grand Tour were literally in my neighbourhood the same week I got that damn glorified flu, and I couldn't go see them because of that and the extreme fever. Then it got even worse because one of my favourite men, James May, smashed one of my favourite cars, the Evo VIII. But, I digress, what I was gonna say, was that this San Martin looks like it has some really insane finishing, those hands look super crisp, and those chamfered edges on the side of the case is also gorgeous. If it wasn't for the fact that I already have 4 watches on the list I want to buy, I think I might would look into either this or the Sugess.
    Thanks for another good video, Pip! I quite enjoy your content and witty comments. You're just like Chris Evans, if Chris Evans was entertaining and intelligent, and had vaguely more charisma than something just pulled from a drain.

      I'm gonna assume you're referring to the Chris Evans of Captain America fame and say, yes, I'm definitely more charismatic than him... 😅 I love(d) the Seestern and am currently fighting the urge to buy one in the teal or navy colourway. As for The Grand Tour, I've actually got my own Clarkson nod in the next vid...but like you, James May would be my preference if going just shooting the shit over a pint. The hands are crisp, but some blemishes on there! I'm wondering if a blacked-out handset would eradicate that issue and mean a more legible dial (off-set against the white dial, of course).

    • @raven_of_zoso455
      @raven_of_zoso455 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Lume Pip May would be a great bloke to drink with, for sure. And he's also a bit of a watch-geek, which is cool. The Seestern looks really nice in teal, I got the navy blue one with the ceramic bezel, I tend to keep it on a brown leather strap, but it is really versatile no matter what you have it on. Personally, I am debating a Certina DS Action in 43mm now, and then I probably sell my San Martin Sub (SN0017-G v.2) and maybe the Seestern too.
      Edit: And yes, a black hand set would probably be a nice feature for that one with a white dial.

The Octopus looks a bit more interesting given it looks like it’s actually going a bit more all-in for the Pelagos. Seems to have that shimmering bezel insert and it has the PT5000, which I’ve only had positive experiences with tbf. The SM one looks really nice, and will be really well finished, I’m sure, but wish they’d offered more movement options. If you think about it, pay 200 quid for a watch that costs 50 quid to produce, or pay 4K for a watch that costs 500 quid to produce, who is really taking advantage of the consumer.

      I've got another one in now and it's absolutely fantastic. The finishing on the head of the watch is just great, as is the bezel action, dial etc etc, but the bracelet still has some really sharp edges. Not sure why that hasn't been addressed yet.

    Why in the world would I pay Steinhart money for a 100% Chinese watch??? I own an Ocean 39 Vintage GMT running the 90 series (chronometer base) ETA 2893-2. Very much one of my favorite watches in my modest collection. I’m an old pilot without Medical . Alas, we all age out. So, I have lots of chronographs, every kind of GMT, etc. Autos and Quartz make up my collection. I really love them all :-) Thanks again for a good vid!
    BTW: I will NEVER buy any chronograph with the Idiot Dial (worthless 24 hour sub dial) These homage nothing. Historically a proper chronograph has at least 2 sub dials: (bi-compax) Running seconds & the other is usually a 30 minute totalizer. On a Speedy of course is the addition of the supremely useful 12 hour totalizer. Same with the Daytona, Fortis Classic Cosmonaut etc. Generally the layout is like any VAL JOUX 7750 with or without Day (I do not think I’ve ever seen a VJ 7750 powered Chrono without the Date at least, at 3:00.
    What I will never (NEVER) need is some fake sub dial telling me if it’s daytime or nighttime…..do a whole bunch of spelunking I do….& those farm space walks…..these are the only 2 legitimate uses for this joke of a “fashion dial”….reviewer gushes…”Oh, it adds balance!” BS. So, rant over but say Seiko (I have several) and their new SpeedTimer…NOPE! Looks great but a full 1/3 of the entire dial space is wasted. Does no one but Baltany know the huge secret? Think Seiko Quartz: Think VK-67. Perfectly accurate historically. Great functionality (it’s a TOOL WATCH….not Barbie’s birthday gift to Ken. I have found Tri-Compax watches on Ali X for sub $60.00 USD powered by a VK-67 and sporting a 12 hour sub dial. I am curious if anyone knows: Does the VK-67 also run the 24 hour decorative sub dials??? Oh, if you say yes……..😭😭😭, lol 🤪😵‍💫😜
    Thanks

    A Homage takes inspiration from a design, these are copies ( not homages) of the Tutor. Why would a company make copies? Because they also make outright forgeries in the same factory. The Chinese can make nice watches, they should compete by making their own designs. Don't support them making copies, they are capable of so much more.

    So where is the comparison review between the Seestern and the San Martin? Seestern/ Sugess is just 30% cheaper than San Martin and better specs.

    • @LumePip
      @LumePip  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd love to do one but I don't have anywhere near enough money to do so! 😅Hopefully if/when the channel gets bigger, the brands might let me have hefty discounts or just lend me some models for review. As it stands, I can't afford to, but I agree - in theory, the Sugess is a much better buy! I saw Escape Wheel's review of that model and thought it looked a better buy overall

    • @renebense
      @renebense ปีที่แล้ว

      Escape wheel gets his watches for free, but still no comparison side by side. Anyway, I have 8 San Martin watches, and they are great and I have 4 Sugess / Seestern watches that look and feel the same build quality for 30 % less. Prices creep up though, so in a years time San Martin, Proxima, Chronos and Sugess will compete at the top of the Chinese homage watch trade and the Swiss really have to step up, to validate that made in Switzerland is worth 10x as much.

    Have the white printed dial and it's extremely versatile. The applied version has very poor visibility, so black would probably be best version for applied logo/markers. Was actually planning to sell the white version, but after seeing your video, the black charcoal dial seems quite dull.

    For £200 or so you cant go wrong with a san martin really. Buy one for everyday and save for a luxury watch , and buy preowned. For 2 to 2.5k you can buy a nice black bay , and the value will pretty much hold up. Dont buy 10 san martins or whatever , because eventually, you will realise you could have got the real deal for the money youve spent on those 10 homages !!! Its not easy parting with nearly 3k on a watch , but after you do it once , it becomes easier, lol. Nothing worse than a watch that stops running on your wrist, that’s the problem with these San martins . I wind the watch, move wrist through out the day and wear the watch for a few days and look down and the damn things aren’t running just stopped. I gave up on this brand . My tag watch and gevril watch never stop running on my wrist way better movements in them

      @LumePip  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's sounds a nightmare, honestly! I think this is really bad luck, because I can honestly say those I've had have been great, most with the bog-standard Seiko movements. I've warmed a lot more to them as I'd just replace the movement outright if I ever had issues with one. But yeah, you'll probably get better QC and regulation etc from those big brands.
