Raghuram Rajan Talks to Barkha Dutt

  • "India’s growth is nothing to write home about right now,” says former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan. Speaking to Barkha Dutt in an in-depth exclusive interview, Rajan made it clear that when asked for his opinion he told the government "in no uncertain terms" that Demonetization was not the best way to tackle black money. Calling it a "jhatka" that hit the economy, Rajan said "on day one the government should have been ready to replace the banned notes with enough currency for transactions," Rajan's new book ‘I Do What I Do’ has broken his self-imposed year long silence.
In this interview he also makes it clear that he had no offer from the government to stay on though he had been willing. Watch and Share the full interview here The Week Barkha Dutt

Interesting questions by Seasoned Journalist #BarkhaDutt. Respected #RaghuramRajan is truly such a fine and insightful speaker. His points are beyond being valid and he is most UNPOLITICAL, which is a rarity globally. More power and goodness to come your way, Respected Rajan. Really pray that you are once again a part of Hon'ble PM #NarendraModi and Respected FM #ArunJaitley's core team. India really needs you.

It's a shame that we are not able to utilise intellectuals who would have done wonders for the country. Whoever gets elected has a responsibility to the people of India. Forget differences, work together and build a great nation. Otherwise intolerance, short-sightedness, arbitrariness will only bring our country down. In the process other countries will progress and we will be left behind.

When you take tough decisions sometimes things will click and sometimes it won't. Similarly with tough reforms about which i have been reading since time immemorial, that unless india goes for tough reforms not much will happen. Demonetization had all the right intents but maybe it didn't turn out the way it was supposed to and the government deserves flak for it and that's how it should be in democracy. People should debate the merits of all decision making. The plus point i personally find in this whole process is that finally we have a government at the center that is not going to shy away from taking hard decisions and moving in the direction of tough reforms. whether it was GST or bankruptcy bill passed with inputs from Mr Rajan at that time, finally we have a government willing to get things done. I remember back in days when Manmohan singh was our PM, his biggest achievement was civil nuclear deal with USA and everyday i used to read articles in The Hindu as to how we were compromising on our sovereignty as nation (Later i knew The Hindu falls with left ideology and against anything pro USA). And people who opposed civil nuclear deal were his own allies, the left party of karat's and Yechury. A single majority government will have more elbowroom to take decision and in the long run its more beneficial and that's what we have currently and i am bullish on India. The government is still pursuing black money case and recently several shell companies were barred from trading at NSE, and even their CEO's will have to face prison time. So things are moving in direction of catching corrupt people. It will take time. Our population is no less than that of a continent full of tax evaders everywhere. Our tax/GDP ratio is dismal 16% whereas if you look at developed countries its around 30-45%. We need a tough leader willing to take tough decisions. Too much of dilly dallying has cost the nation 70 years.

What he said about boasting when we haven't achieved anything substantial (besides space research) compared to Brazil, China and Russia is absolutely true. The 8th largest city in China is better planned and has better infrastructure than ANY city in India. We as a country have more poor people than China or Brazil as a PROPORTION of the overall population. Our per capita income is the lowest among all the BRIC nations. We have so much poverty around us in every city and town that you can't find in China's major cities or Russia. We are the poorest among the BRIC nations. Safety of women is the worst in India compared to China, Brazil and Russia.
So stop boasting and start cleaning up our country and work towards making better instead of chest-thumping about how it already is when it's so visibly not!

Shadow economy and informal sector has taken a hit, thus low gdp growth, previous governments failed to bring reform, your present government has done it in 3 years, ofc it will affect business as usual. if India wants to grow big it must formalized its economy. TLDR: short term loss for long term gain.

Did demonetisation cause stress? This question by economist is similar to - Did tetanus injection hurt? By mother of the child. Perhaps leader of the country has to look beyond temporary hurt, just as the doctor has to think beyond temporary hurt. Other question - Was country happy to have Mayavati in CM's post in UP? Quite a possibility when big garlands of notes were adorned regularly. If there was unfair political advantage to opposition and if Modi tried to take away that advantage, I think there is nothing wrong in it.

What he said was completely correct ( if this plan has to be public), what Govt could do in the circumstances was also correct ( to hold the manipulators secretly) Are you dumb to understand this what other 99% indians supported modi for!! It's not the plan... it's guts and courage to execute the plan to shock the Black marketers!! Barkha failed to get the words from his mouth against demonitisation!! It's not about the profit and loss from it, it's more about the social and psychological impact on people. Now people understand that this kind of decisions if taken again will spoil the black money, they will be more aware!!

It was urjit Patel who went ahead with demonetization and was successful also... Rajan didn't had the guts.. What is he trying to achieve with his book..i would rather wait for a boom by Patel to know how he pulled of it successfully. Urjit Patel should speak more in public forums.. And not let other do the unnecessary commentary.

The immediate tangible benefits of demonetization are :
    (i) Public sector banks liquid funds in savings bank account swelled to extra 2.5lakh crores to start the credit cycle for home loans
(ii)3.5 lakh crores less cash in the system. Informal economy contracted by 1% and hence GDP growth now likely to be around 6.5% which was expected.
(iii) Govt subisidy 4%-2% for home loans for people who are in income range of 5 -12 lakhs for homes with 1000sqft and less with RERA compliance. Real estate shifts from High end luxury apartments to affordable homes with RERA compliance.populist scheme
(iv) Inflation is at historic low 1.5%.More scope for RBI to cut rates in future ,to boost the credit cycle
    (v) 20% increase in the income tax payers. The corresponding increase in Tax collection will be known by Dec-17
(vi)VBJY scheme of providing 8% FD interest for senior citizens for investment upto 7.5 lakhs for a period of 10 years.Populist scheme.
(vii) Modi 's tough talk to all CA's not to give advise to Tax evaders ,shell companies made ICAI regulator to charge sheet more than 4500 CA's in a span for four months
(viii) Around 2 .5lakh shell companies and , 12 lakh duplicate PANs are identified and the drive is continuous,
(ix) More than 80% to 90% of the medical seats in pvt medical colleges are vacant ,money laundering in medical colleges had come to an end.
By targeting less than 1.0% of the creamy layer of the society Modi govt had earned enormous good will from the bottom 70% to 80% of the population. By hindsight one can say that the Chicago professor RR would not have undergone the hot grind ,as gracefully as underwent by the present Governor Urigid Patel. One needs decades of training in Indian ecosystem to accept that condition which Urigid patel underwent.
RR was risk averse , very articulate and sophisticated but tactically avoided the bootstrap situation enforced by the govt in Nov-16 and opted for his comfort zone "academics".Modi's demon drive with bio metrics can be a case study for business schools in future. RR is the correct person to carryout such studies but it was wrong call in Feb-16 and he missed a life time opportunity

Sir - cylo ? That is the problem, anyone talks against you, you name him, whatever, thats in your blood. No one attributes decline in growth rate to demonitization, but problem here is the Govt is so proud and marketing it as a success , though it didn't achieve what it was designed for. At least tell don't give false/fake info to people of country.

Where is question of blind fan, I am not fan of any party but BJP and Mr.Modiji worked very hard to bring India on right track. Wake up and see how many good work done by Mr.Modiji, latest one is Bullet train, You can see how China calmed down, how many terrorist killed last two months and many more
