    Hey Professor,
you are right there are multiple possibilities for letting Quinn go and personally I think it is more than one or two reasons why he was let go. I think the fan barbarians are at the gate after so many consecutive seasons missing the play offs and then such a horrid season as this year I think probably there was considerable pressure from ownership to at least make that move to inject some hope amongst the season ticket holders.
I also think that when things go badly and even sometimes when things are more normal coaches can "lose the players" and when that happens players stop listening to the coach and that all by itself is a sure fire reason to fire a coach and I suspect given all the healthy scratches from veteran players this season that was likely a huge reason for letting him go.
I also think it can't be easy as a GM to entice veteran players to sign with your team when there is the whiff of coaching problems wafting through the free agency market. It is probably helpful to entice free agents by telling them look at what we have coming in? New coach. New players. Young talent via the draft. On and on.
I also suspect given David Quinn and Mike Grier's long friendship that this topic was openly discussed between them when the offer was being discussed. Lets face it; How often do team fire their coach during rebuilding stretches? All the time. "According to a 2020 article by Neil Paine of FiveThirtyEight, an NHL coach’s average tenure is just 2.4 years." (Jack Han, 2021 Substack.com)
I would guess that when Quinn was let go he was given a nice severance package as well as his remaining pay owed him for taking one for the team. Coaches talk too and if you mistreat your coaches there might be some difficulty in attracting desirable coaches so treat 'em right even when you let them go.
I actually liked Quinn though I don't envy him the task put before him as Sharks head coach. I mean we did improve in our power play considerably which is pretty remarkable particularly in light of how offensively challenged this team was. I wish him well wherever he winds up next.

Honestly, I just want a head coach that’ll implore a good system and develop the young guys effectively - we already have a solid forward group, let’s just continue to see them develop
EDIT: Our forward group is even better now with CELEBRINI!

Quinn seems like a good man & I wish him well going forward, but I’m pleased with this move. Hopefully the next coach will have greater success, regardless of the make up of the roster. Other teams would have done the same thing. Lastly, Quinn’s still got 1 year left on his contract, so he’ll be fine.

    Hey Professor Hockey,
what do you think about Marco Sturm as head coach. He managed to get germany to the olympic final. He has some roots to the Sharks and experience in the AHL and as an assitant coach in the NHL. I realy liked his game as a player for the Sharks before the Thorton trade. He was able to earn a roster spot one year after his draft. I think he might be the perfect fit as he is also young enough to connect to the probably very young team. Hasso might not be opposed to the in germany highly appriciated hockey star as well. He is my dark horse bet as the new head caoch.

That’s a very interesting option. He is currently with the Ontario Reign in the AHL so it would be the type of promotion he’s looking for. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was on the list of candidates

@@professorhockey Maybe my dream comes true. First Celebrini and additional Marco Sturm as head coach.

I’m honestly relived to see Quinn go. After seeing how poorly he handled young talent in NY and some of the downright weird decisions he made this year I definitely don’t think he was the guy for the job. He served his purpose well of leading us through a tank season and seems like that was always kind of the plan.
Do you think the sharks would go after someone like McLellan or Woodcroft?
The familiarity would be nice and they’re both pretty damn good coaches in my opinion.

I think the Sharks may go off board with their choice. I’d like to believe Grier doesn’t really believe the team is going to be much better next year so he might go with an unknown instead of retreading the same known quantity coaches.

The Sharks finished the season as poorly as they started. Practically no improvement or progress towards anything with Quinn.

Can this be his best move if he’s the one who hired him? Lol good riddance
