  • Week 1 of the 1989 season. Chicago beats the defending AFC champion Bengals, 17-14. The victory extends their week one winning streak to six under coach Mike Ditka. The Bears rushed for 212 yards, 146 of them belonged to RB Neal Anderson.

    Neal Anderson is class act. Never played the fool & always respected the game

      Neal was the man. He was overshadowed by Barry and Emmitt, but He could do it all. He was literally the Bears entire offense for 5 years. Really a shame the organization completely collapsed in the early '90s. Plus, the nagging injuries really slowed him down...but damn, he was the Bears' entire offense for 5 years
      Edit: Mike Tomczak was trash🤣🤣

    Bill Walsh's first regular season game as a TV analyst. He worked for NBC for 3 seasons before returning to coaching at Stanford.

    • @CJinsoo
      @CJinsoo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, his first 2 years were not nearly what they could have been. As a rookie he was better than Payton, but what can you do when the player you are replacing is one of the best to ever play the game?
      Thinking about Anderson, I cannot recall what he sounded like in interviews? He seemed like a guy who didn’;t seek media attention.

      Anderson’s first two seasons in ‘86-87 were wasted as he waited for Payton to pass the torch. Every time he touched the ball it was electric & fans could tell he was going to be something special. By that time it had become clear that Payton had lost a step. Payton was the greatest, but it was difficult to watch him from late ‘86 to ‘87. By then, Payton was dropping passes and had an increased propensity to fumble the ball, ESPECIALLY when the Bears were within FG range or in the red zone. By mid ‘87, Ditka was featuring Anderson & Payton was more of a blocking/receiving back. Anderson got injured with 3gms left in the regular season & the Bears offense fell apart. Without Anderson, the Bears lost 2 of their last three, along with their divisional round matchup to the Redskins. I often wonder what might have been if #35 had been available to boost the offense during that game. Payton is still my favorite player ever, but it was hard to watch him at the end. Right now, I can still hear my Father screaming, “G*d d#m*it Payton, use both your hands, for cripes sakes cover the d*mn ball with TWO hands!” My Dad LOVED the Bears..
      He had a thing for Willie “Stone Hands” Gault too….

    Not sure why Ditka would say James Brooks had lost it. He had a good 1988 season sharing carries with Icky Woods, and then went onto his best season ever this year, proving Ditka wrong.

    • @brockgeorge777
      @brockgeorge777 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Actually not a true hurry up. Rather a “no huddle” offense that *could* snap quickly if you tried to substitute. Oddly, Sam Wyche loved to control the clock and often used time of possession to reduce the number of plays his somewhat below average defense would face.
      Starting the next year the Bills-who whined mightily when Cincinnati first used the “no huddle”-adopted a true no huddle “hurry up” version desired to not only prevent opponents from substituting, but to run as many plays as quickly as they could even if that made the defense face more opponent plays.

    Bears started the year 4-0 and were looking pretty good with some new faces blending well with some of the old guard and then...oh dear...the wheels fell off: 2-10 the rest of the way, the end of the Bears mini dynasty.

      The NFC was stacked in 1989. Even the Packers had a decent year, within the NFC Central. On the other hand, in the AFC, you had maybe the Bills and the Broncos, and that was about it

    Why was there only one football game on NBC at 1:00PM ET that day? But there was 7 games on NBC at 4:00ET on NBC that same day? They should've had 4 games for the 1:00ET slot and 4 games for the 4:00PM ET slot. Make it look even and better.

    Dan Hampton was a real life monster on the football field. Played injured an aching all the time. Idiot Michael McCaskey wouldn't guarantee him an extra season after he sat out a couple weeks with knee problems. He was willing to play hurt and the Bears couldn't do without him. They started 3-0 and only won 3 more the rest of the way as Hampton shut himself down for the rest of the season. Chicago is still suffering at the hands of the worst management to ever control an NFL team, the McCheapsky family.

    It would have been nice if Ditka didn't take lumps of coal and try to turn them into diamonds. (Tomzack, Harbough, & Flutie) Should have signed a QB that was good or done something. The QB's were the only reason that they didn't win more Super Bowl's.

    • @nurserock77
      @nurserock77 ปีที่แล้ว

      Uhh….You must be thinking of a different Mike Tomczak. The one I’m thinking of was mistake prone, momentum murdering, drive killing, season ruining, turnover machine who had a penchant for instantly turning a high impact offense into an ANEMIC one.
      The Bears were having a great season in 1990 with Harbaugh as the starter. Harbaugh was injured with 3 games left in the year & ruled out for the season, making Tomczak the starter. The Bears offense, which had been clicking going 10-3, immediately shit the bed and the Bears lost 2 of the last 3 to go 11-5. They beat the Saints (unimpressively) in the Wild Card playoff game and got ROASTED 31-3 by the NY Giants in the Divisional Round. THAT is the T-zak I remember….
      Who are you talking about?
      I recall most Bears fans celebrating when they FINALLY released him after 1990 season.

      agree in the sense that Tzack cost the Bears nothing-an undrafted free agent, and eventually became a decent backup NFL QB. Tzack played a long time after leaving the Bears. he probably would have been better had he played for a supportive coach. Not going to be a star or anything as he seemed to fold under pressure and lock in to receivers. one reason you should be hard on guys at QB is to see if they can handle the pressure. it was his weakness, for sure.
