the best looking plane ever built ...Something sinister and beautiful about this plane I cant describe it ..
My favorite air show airplane. The Harrier is fantastic to watch perform maneuvers.

I have had the great pleasure of serving in VMA-513 and witness probably *the funniest crash in Marine Corp aviation history* . AV8A Low on fuel and circling because the crosswind component was far to high to do a conventional landing. The pilot is telling tower and ground that he did not have the fuel to circle much longer and was going to do a cross field approach and vertical landing. Now remember, the reason for this was the fuel was dangerously low but it takes more fuel to land vertically than conventionally. Anyway, pilot comes in across the field low and transitions the nozzles and gets decelerated to almost 0/0 when the fuel runs out. The bird is about 25 feet in the air, and just drops out of the sky and slams into the ground collapsing the gear but the gun pods (as was the case for wheels up landings in the AV8A) did not get shoved up into the fuselage. But this is not the funny part. The crash truck approached at high speed from behind the AC on the ground (into the wind) and started blowing foam despite the fact that the reason for the crash was no fuel. The foam though was going into a headwind and blew back and obstructed the driver's vision, and the AV8A is a small aircraft and looks even smaller when it is on the ground wheels up, so the driver misjudged his distance and hit the bird with considerable speed and totaled the airframe. The pilot had managed to get free of the AC before the crash truck hit it, so no one was injured. For the spectators though (and I monitored the tower comms so we were all out on the apron watching because it was a friend out there in trouble) it was pretty funny. I mean it wasn't our money. We almost always laughed at crazy Harrier stuff. (Later, we did lose an AV8A in a training run. Pilot flew into the water. Target Fixation was ruled to be the probable cause. They recovered scraps for weeks to try to do forensics on it. Covered half of a hanger floor. Pilot was essentially ground up to nothing because in an AV8A, you are sitting a couple of feet in front of the biggest food processor blade ever put into a fighter jet. That is not meant to be funny, it is meant to say that flying in an attack aircraft is dangerous stuff.
Thank you for your service, and for sharing this story. Funny stuff. Rip the poor bloke who hit the water though.
It always amazes me how small this magnificent and unique jet is compared to other modern fighters...
But I'd love to own one 🙂🙂🙂
Excellent piece of engineering.
one of the most awesome jets..
I want to see it take off vertically
I worked at the factory where these were made, along with the early Typhoon. To this day the Harrier is the most inspirational aircraft I have ever seen up close
Beautiful¡¡¡ thank you.
Magnificent machine. Semper Fi
.
Duct taping part was hilarious. and the guy with his hands feeling a live and running jet intake was equally mind-numbing.
The taping seems standard. Not sure why maybe if they drop tanks and recover each tank can be identifiable?
Muchas gracias, he aprendido mucho por medio de sus aportes.
This aircraft ia simply awesome
Built new generation of harrier..such cool birds.
That looked like MCAS Yuma. Wonder if the ground crews still have their "parties" and 24/7, no-holds-barred airsoft wars.....
I kid, the Jarines and Navy folks at Yuma were some of the most friendly, professional, and straight-shooting folks to work alongside I've ever known, especially if you're an Army visitor to their post.
Always a pleasure to watch AV-8's and A-10's in action. The two planes that always show up on-time/on-target to deliver the goods for the grunts in contact on the ground.
mo no
Judging by the tailcode, it's MCAS Miramar.
Amazing video, congratulations!
Para me, da classe, ainda é o melhor; em pouso e decolagem!
Semper Fi my brothers!!!
Thank you for your service Marine.
Love the sound of Harrier when Pegasus engine spools up to Vertical takeoff power.
Thank you for your service.
EXCELENTE VIDEO.
I admire the ground crew for being so relaxed passing near the engine intake without worries, i would be very nervous.

Amazing British technology and aircraft
Those are McDonnell Douglas designed and built AV-8B Harrier IIs, not British.
@@AA-xo9uw tbf, the concept and airframe are based on the original British harrier and the engine (the heart of the plane which makes the harrier "harrier") are British engines

what an airplane!!
Fascinating aircraft anyway!

Thanks to the UK
Thank you to the t'ime groupes landings.
great landing!!
Lindo avión de combate, pero, pensaba que despegaría y aterrizaría de forma vertical.
Saludos desde Chile.🇨🇱🇬🇧
Maybe it's a USAF Regulation I was used to ,but we always had to steer way clear of engine intakes and that Harrier has a Helluva Intake!!

Super work
Olá é legal ver o herrers voando na vertical e na horizontal é de mais ok
So proud to be British, thanks England for giving us the harrier jumpjet, british engineering at its finest
If you listen to the interview that art Nalls gave you'de think the AB-8B was almost entirely American :-(
@@ollyk22 It almost is..Electronics avionics ,missiles and the overall capability.
The only things the Americans didn't replace is the Pegasus engine..Development of brand new engine for 300 planes would have cost billions .Except that there is nothing left in this plane that is British..
@@barracuda7018 yes but it is only a development of the original airframe. It reall isn't different enough to make out like it was a major innovation bu the Americans. If I didn't know better I would walk away thinking it was a totally different beast, not just an upgrade.
@@ollyk22 It's a vastly improved upgrade.
@@ollyk22 it’s not, America bought it from England then put their own missiles and shit on it
Sure looks like the ground crew gets close to the intakes!
As long as the engine isn't spooled up you can get fairly close

Sigue siendo un super avion!!!!
How much weight it can carry while flying?
I don't understand the big missile like structure on the Harrier wings beside the small missiles
Those are extra fuel tanks. The two "small missiles" under each wing are bombs.

It will be a sad day when the last of these amazing aircraft are retired from service. The F-35B may have the same and more capabilities than the Harrier, but it will never have the same iconic legacy that the Harrier has.
Wonderful Airplane!
Looked like the ground crew support guy conducted a "100 hour inspection."
Did I see a ground crew member using Duct Tape on the tail fin area of that ordinance

the takeoff appears to be the technique they use on a ship; horizontal thrust to get moving; a short takeoff run, partial vertical thrust to get into the air. The landing looks like it was also a "hybrid"; horizontal velocity combined with some significant vertical thrust. The approach doesn't look like it was flown at speeds necessary for entirely wing-borne flight. Interesting.

what exactly version of Harier it is ?, there is no laser in de nose ? is it version with radar ?
Harriers do conventional take off runs when loaded with bombs drop tanks etc, anything to save fuel. VTOL ops only done on front lines
Harriers do conventional takeoffs when loaded as they don't have the power to take off vertically that way. Max takeoff weight for VTOL is below 21,000lbs. Bearing in mind that the aircraft empty is almost 14,000lbs.
Not true.
@@oldfucker68 Evidence (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_Douglas_AV-8B_Harrier_II )
@@oldfucker68 what isn't true? Harrier loaded even with fuel tanks will struggle to vertically takeoff
Aaa 8437w7dkdisi3jed correct, harriers will actually often take off from the boat with empty wing tanks and then hook up with a tanker because you can’t do VTOL above about 22,000 lbs maximum. That’s the maximum thrust of the engines
It’s criminal that the RAF doesn’t operate this fantastic British aeroplane
I hate this aircraft w a passion .. so much bs u have to put up with just make the flight schedule
@@salvadorayala3860 You're probably Argentinian
The Harrier II is a McDonnell Douglas aircraft not British.

At 7:06 mark, what shade of dark blue is that on the topside of the wings? In other words, what is the 595 C federal standard (FS) number for that dark blue paint?

Designed and developed in UK.
Made in USA.
Assembled at least.
Every single Harrier II air frame, regardless of the operator, was made from 60% US manufactured components and 40% British ones.
The only thing that changed was where the parts were assembled into a finished aircraft.

Or just touch it.
I wouldn't count on it... sorry, but they're being retired soon. If you want to be a fighter pilot, go for it, but don't expect an AV-8, or even the aircraft you want...

And even then you still have the F-35B
