Neysayers where whining when the Jan Dhan accounts were being created. It was thought to be impossible for a large and diverse society. But it is a reality today. It has transformed lives. Building a semiconductor industry is a huge challenge. But India can do it. Every time a difficult challenge was thrown, India has delivered. In ten-twenty years India will be a major player in Semiconductor production.
I'm currently working in this field as GPU Design Engineer. Next year ill be going to US for masters and PhD research. Maybe in the future i can comeback and plan a start-up in india in semiconductor fabrication sector. let's see how it goes
Risk is minimal. Our internal consumption is so high that we don't have to depend on export. Example Tata and other Auto player alone can consume all of the Automatic chips manufactured by Tata semiconductor company. Second think about the logistics cost saving when chips are manufactured locally vs imports from China/ South Korea etc you cutting the shipping cost.Third we are not going to get latest 3nm chips but the older chips 18 nm 200 nm etc. that are already matured and standardised production line. Even Apple is not going to make iPhone chips in India for at least next 5 years or more. Most important advantage is we can design and manufacture our own military use chips without the world knowing what new weapons are being developed by India. So I see many advantages.

Semiconductor is a board term for non-linear electronic components , from transistor, power regulators, diodes, opamps, analog IC, digital IC, micro-controllers , FPGA to the latest gen CPU/TPU/GPU, and everything in between. I don't hear them talking about world class FAB. they are talking about frugal with highest return, so mostly the focus might be mass produced semiconductor using dated technology for very competitive price. It's not necessary to compete with TSMC to be counted as big boys. TI, Toshiba, Onsemi, Renesas are also the big boys in semiconductor, and seems like India wants to follow that path. No-one talked about a cutting edge CPU/GPU in the interview.
