+Jorn Zwaagstra On papar Paetorian guards are great but you'd never actually field them because they're so expensive. Sure, you can spam them in campaign to your hearts desire because campaign moneys a joke. But, any good multiplayer lobby will have a gold limit.
If you start as parthia, and end up taking over the closer patthavian city which is a blacksmith, and convert it to the armor bonus one and eventually get it to the rank 3 level... -_- Royal cataphracts max out the armor bar on the unit description. THEY ARE UNSTOPPABLE. I once charged a Royal Peltasts General with my unit rank 7 Cataphract General and in the initial charge killed 40 out of 120 units. They threw the javelins as I was charging in and didn't kill a single unit. The reason why I would put them as first, however, is because the fact that as a general unit they are the best. Your general is more mobile than most foot units (The weakness of the RC), You are more armored than most other units in the game, and if you have second wind you can use trample and diamond formation over and over again to demolish EVERYTHING.
Praetorian Guard i was expecting for Top1, Being super OP they were. They were like Armour Legionaries but with slightly lower armor higher overall stats, and a slightly large cost but I often had PG's on my Front line and they wreck the field.

Iberian Swordsmen are probably the finest medium skirmishers in the game they not only have pretty decent missile stats they have the melee stats to deal with most infantry units that catch up to them and even some light cav
Yep. Haven't played in a long time, but during my testing Oathsworn were by far the most powerful unit. They destroyed everything, could charge elite phalanxes/pikes head on and barely take any casualties. They used to be relatively cheap too, but it looks like they cost more than Praetorians these days.
Aegyptus, 2 port settlements for the Mediterranean and Red Seas, a grain settlement (never a bad thing), iron for top-tier military buildings and 2 wonders.
nobody thick on socii extraordinarii? why? socii infantry are just simple great on all way: they're cheap to upkeep, have good stats and reliable in tough battle. Try and reply.
tominnenPL well the shock cavalry used by the romans from the socii are awesome but socii Hastati is not that great for battling. I've used it in battle and it and gets killed off in two minutes. It's good as a distraction though or support for your other units
I have to mention Veteran Shield Warriors. Their melee defense is soooo high. The only weakness is arrow fire but once you get them into melee they're very powerful and yeah, they're pretty cost effective. Let's not forget those damn Libyan Peltasts... They beat cavalry that's trying to chase them down.
Triarii are good for their price, and good in the early game. However, in the later game, they are more so something you use to irritate enemy lines while you prepare an actual assault.
Ok so I've played Rome 2 for a while now and I wanted to just randomly share a tip with you guys. When you are playing as Rome after you conquer the Etruscan league go for grease preferably Eperis and then when you capture a Greek settlement set up a auxiliary barracks there this will allow you to recruit peltast, hoplites, and citizen calvery this is a good way to get decent units early on in the game keep in mind tho you probably want to keep one army back in Rome in case war breaks out with the barbarians or Carthage with you
I've actually ran some tests as to which unit is the most powerful using a no stamina and no morale mod. Pound for Pound the Thracian Nobles are the best infantry in the game, with their charge they start off against any unit on top (oathsword, praetorians, lusitani nobles, heroic nobles, etc) and then from there they basically go 1 for 1 trading units until they come out on top, especially with their headhunt making them all the more deadly.
I got a slightly different approach. If you are playing a campaign I got to say; Principes! They are available in the early game. They don't cost that much and with a dignitaries they cost less. Nothing can stand them. They choke a spot. Pierce through spot. Hold spot so you can hammer and anvil. They are just legionnaires but in very early game.
I had Spartans (with spears because in a video a watched the guys had them stay still and had no spears) vs praetorians and the Spartans won (because they threw thier spears unlike the guy who favoured the praetorians who made them grab swords) so there ya go
The Saka Noble Archers, or whatever, because they are incredibly powerful in melee as well as in ranged. They are also incredibly well armored so they take almost no casualties from foot archers.

My definitive favorite Roman unit is the Armored Legionares. Great attack and weapon damage and absured armor and health. Just amasing main line infantry. For the list I agree about Royal Cataphrats and Royal Spartans. They are the best units in their class.
Most cost-effective: armored legionaries Best combat unit: praetorian guard PG units are simply unstoppable. I played a friend once with an entire army of PG against a balanced army, and all I did was charge straight into his formation. A massive blob formed and I ended up winning, losing only two units even after losing my general at the very beginning. Their morale is insane, their stats are loaded, so even when they are surrounded they'll hold their ground and win.
Yes i disagree that royal cataphract is the best cav in the game because this cav is not good in melee combat after charge.Yet this cav is my favourite shock cav.

Caleb Zuk The best starting faction is obviously Rome. :p Other good picks are Macedon, Egypt, something like that. They are probably the easier factions.

Tbh falxmen are fucking great. I dont know how to use them so i just charge them behind heavy enemy infantry and even though they get absolutely wrecked (entity/health) they also rack up 100-150 kills everytime. Imo they do way more then you pay for
I never know what to chose: Armoured legionaries or evocati cohort. the armoured have +3 melee defence and +5 armour, but -3 melee attack. So what makes you chose evocati?
Hywooz zoowyh Evocati is cheaper, and you get more bang for your buck. Armoured legionaries are extremely good as well though, you can choose both of them, it all depends on the budget.
The difference is only 40, which basically is almost nothing, when you keep in mind that 1 Evocati unit costs 890. Admit it, Evocati just sounds a lot better ;-)
