- I drove my camper van to Sweden to buy a Hasselblad Xpan II panoramic film camera. In this video I collect my new camera, explain why I drove so far for it and shoot a few frames of Kodak Ektarchrome E100 slide film. I hope you enjoy this landscape photography video.

As an Australian, I find it so crazy that you can just _drive_ to another country! I'd dearly love to come to the UK one day.
Hi thomas
Some advice from a long time X-Pan II user.
The 45mm lens hodd fits also perfectly on the 90mm lens
A Canon jack electrical release fits the X-Pan II
You should definitely find and buy the special Hasselblad center filter for the 45mm. It remove totaly vignetting on film, and so you get better quality scans.
Luigi in Italy makes (even today) fabulous fine leather half cases for different X-Pan models, with diffferent options.
Often changing format on the same film draines massively the batteries (film has to be wound and rewound at each change), so you have ever to carry 2 sets of spare batteries when mixing a lot panos and classical framing.
Enjoy your X-Pan
There could not be a better owner of this camera. I’m sure we’re all going to see some stunning images as Thomas gets to grips with this amazing piece of photographic technology and all the different films it can take actually being 35mm.
I had the pleasure of owning and using the X-pan, Which I bought new back in the day. It went all over the world with me, until it fell off a mountain! My saddest day photographically! I'm sure you'll enjoy yours, happy new X-pan!
They were all winners Tom,,, ur spoilt with the beautiful bush scenery
Trigger happy there, Tom. That's quite a smile you're wearing, despite the stinging cost of a bridge, a ferry, fuel and another Hassleblad! Pleased you got your film processed. Looking forward to seeing the other shots and good to see Harvey the motorhome appearing on another channel! :-)
Talked about all the film you got BUT that roll of Pro400H, the real grail of this purchase
Congratulations Thomas with your newly acquired Hasselblad Xpan II camera. I cannot wait to see it in action in your future photoshoots.
Watching Thomas faff about while I have my coffee…. WIN WIN
You're like a kid on Christmas morning and it's fun to watch. Enjoy your new toy.
I guessed it would be a Hasselblad , but did not expect an Xpan! I love that you're giving film more of a go as well!
Me too! I was fully convinced that it'd be an X2D 100C. :D
@@IvanRiveraStagea He did give a MASSIVE hint in the first video it would be a pano camera (~5:43 in the previous video)
@@IvanRiveraStagea X2D 100C make no sense
@@Jekay Yup, I totally forgot about that hint.
@@SuperSuperka Why so? Because he already shoots with a GFX and a Z?
Remembder using the first version of X-pan when I study photography in 1998. A delight to have and shoot with.
For your next trip to Sweden - book in advance! You can often get a discount when you book both the ferry between Denmark and Germany as well as the crossing over the Öresund bridge to Sweden.
I suggest maybe a trip to Öland and a visit to Stora Alvaret (the great Alvar). Unique nature and a good excuse to go camping!
Yeah, this did cross my mind, but I wasn't 100% sure of my schedule. Next time 👍
That last shot is wonderful!
My X pan was stolen from my car back in the late 1990s and I couldn't replace it, I still miss using it. I hope you have a s much pleasure using your x apn as I did mine.
The Woodland image was just stunning!
There is no sensible answer to that question - love it.
Today, 11 15 22, I received your 2023 calendar. I love it!! Thank you so very much!!
I REALLY like the unclose shot of the leaves in the water. I'm thoroughly impressed with what this camera can do, or more specifically, what you can do with this camera.
congrats…i’ve had mine since 2001, now my son gets to enjoy the beautiful images it still produces.
Tom, take a look at 6X17. Your friend Nick Carver has at least one LOL. Enjoy your Xpan. That is a fine camera. Can not go wrong with a Hassy! Stay safe.
You left through the port of tyne, 5 minutes from where I live. Very cool adventure and of course, a brilliant camera!
Wow an Xpan with the 90mm and a roll of Cinestil 50D is about my idea of heaven
Probably wasn't paying enough attention but discovered eleven minutes in it's a 35mm film camera ha...
Extachrome was one of my favourites back in the day (usually with a warm-up filter)
Very professional presentation
Such a cool camera! loved the last shot, perfect autumn colours and amazing composition !
The joy on your face is priceless; similar to when my youngest (6) gets a box of Lego for his birthday.
As always, looking forward to the next video.
I’m very Happy for you and how Happy you are with your new Hasselblad! ❤📷
I can see why you are attracted to this camera. I also really like panoramic views, although my work (my public videos on my channel do not reflect it!) as a cinematographer/videographer requires little use for it. Mostly, my work these days requires shoots of talking heads or factory lines. A lot of tight shots so as not to reveal customer secrets and to avoid shooting anything that would get us into copyright trouble. I have to say that I envy the flexibility in camera settings that photographers enjoy in shooting things like autumn colours in not too great a light. Cinema cameras require a lot of light to make dull subjects look anything special and our shutter speed feels cramped compared with photography. I absolutely love your work Thomas and your dedication and work ethic is something to not only admire but emulate.
good fun.both these sweden videos. (did a TH YT catch-up marathon last night on my telly, here! thank you for the wonderfully enjoyable content🙏🏼)
Absolute dream camera! That gentleman was so kind to give you such an amazing deal when he easily could have sold it for much more online.
Things we all care about now, such as pano with this Xpan etc. etc. I don't know, watching someone who gives this much effort on crafting image through film cameras makes me happy.
That shot of the fallen leaves with water droplets was my favorite. Thanks for taking us along with your excitement!
The image of the leaves is a grate capture, the image detail looks fantastic great work
Oooof one of my all time favourite cameras and very high on my wish list. You have impeccable taste as usual. That woodland shot with the valley in the middle is exquisite!
Thanks a lot. I liked that scene a lot and went back to shoot it on the 501cm. Next week's vid 👍
Would be cool if you show the photos outside of your "color remover, drab look" LUT.
Years ago, I had a X-Pan II with 45 and 90mm lenses, one of the cameras I regret selling.
I wish that Fujifilm reintroduce it again similarly like Leica did recently with M6.
can't remember when I saw you that excited the last time! Great!
Great watching yet another film convert. Can't wait for your 'Setting up a darkroom' series... 👍
I had completely forgotten the sound of shooting with film. Thanks for reminding me.
Thank you. All the best. 👍📷😎
Enjoyed that Tom. Great shots too. 😊
I enjoyed the video, felt your excitement, walk about pics are cool as well
I had one for years (XPan I) Great to see you shoot this panoramic beast.
Love the excitement you had Tom. It reminded me of a kid who got that present that mattered them most on their birthday. One they've been hankering for a long time and dreaming about. Have fun with the playing! Looking forward to what images you find and capture with it.
Back on track Thomas!! This is why I chose to follow your photo outings...Great first images from an amazing camera!
It wouldn't make sense if you were a pure commercial photographer. You'd have it shipped. You'd have it in a week or so and you'd be earning money while it came to you. But it makes absolute sense for a TH-camr to go on an adventure while picking up one of his dream cameras.
I'm only 1/2 way through and this is probably my favourite videos of yours. I'm really loving your enthusiasm and hoping the camera exceeds your hopes.
Enjoying your journey too.
Great video. Who doesn't like a road trip, but collecting new gear is the icing on the cake!
I did not expect it to be this. So happy for I will watch more great content on landscape.
Welcome to Sweden!
Man, I've had my XPAN for about 1,5 years now and I totally understand your excitement. And I can assure you that the feeling still holds up. You start seeing the world in panoramic images every time you hold this camera in your hands. It feels nice, it's a beauty to look at and the lenses, while they are not the fastest, are so freakin' sharp that it blows my mind every time. One thing I recommend doing is shooting vertical panos every now and then in certain situations. They make for some nice prints!
That panoramic photo of the leaves in water was incredible! Very inspiring - thanks for a fun video. I ordered a book to help with your ferry and border crossing costs in the future! haha
Had a look on eBay, you weren’t kidding on price, it is a stunning camera, really look forward to seeing what results you get with it, loved the past two vlogs.
Nice colors captured with that panorama camera and film.
My favorite camera of all time ! Great formats , fuji lens sharpness , mechanical marvel !
I don't often comment, but I have to say I am really enjoying this series of videos. I enjoy all your videos, but im especially enjoying these. :-)
Nice to se you in my home country, Sweden! Welcome welcome! I hope you had a good time :)
Well worth the trip. Those images captured on it are stunning!
Love following your journey to Sweden, looks like a great camera, look forward to seeing more from it.
A thumbs up for your leaves on water picture.
I remember that camera well, always loved the wideangle photos from it, especially verticals 😉
It's a real pity that the ferry between Newcastle and Bergen is not going anymore. You would have had some lovely photo opportunities from Bergen to Sweden. The video was, as always, a real delight.
I know. When doing research for the trip, I was gutted to see there was no Norway ferry.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto I believe there's a two-night Germany to Gothenburg ferry though. Not quite the same as Bergen, but...
Dream camera, it's on that wish list that will never materialise give the cost in recent years. Look forward to see more use from this 35 pano... And @thomas it's about time you dusted off the old intrepid..
I sold my xpan ten years ago and have regretted it ever since. Amazing camera to use. Be careful with slide film - the metering is a bit primitive and can be thrown in contrasty scenes. I always used a separate light meter. The results though are amazing
i felt excited for you. the leaves in the water were brilliant.
Dang; the sound of the film being wound after each shot brought back such pleasant memories - did not expect that. Thanks!
That said, when Kodachrome left - so did a lot of my interest in film. :(
I think you are going to have great success in selling images from that camera & the E100 film
Great to have you on a visit in Sweden! I am not that into landscape photography but I have been a subscriber since you built the Ford camper an and I really enjoy your travel videos.
That's a long time. Glad you're still enjoying the channel 👍
I love watching road trips. They are even better when combined with photography. When I go on a road trip I put my pictures together with some time lapse clips on very short videos. Thank you for posting. Oh yes are you going to retire 'Big Bertha'.
That thing is rad. I love your growing collection of unique cameras.
wow that leaves photo is amazing!
Tom you mean North Shields to Amsterdam surely 😉 , what an adventure to pick up Yr new camera, looking forward to seeing Yr next video and seeing what images you get.
I envy your ability to casually drive across beautiful, historic Europe at your leisure. I'd love to visit there sometime for an extended period. Even then, I'm sure I wouldn't see everything that should be seen.
Nice piece of kit!!
took a train x a few states to collect my brandy new lEICA MP Made a holiday out of it. Same when i got to Boston leica shop.
Great shots!!! you make it look easy!!
I have one in the box ..never been used or touched,,highly collectable item..vow
Greetings Thomas. I have watched your videos and I really appreciate them. You take spectacular photos and what gives you the most pleasure to watch your videos is riding your Camper Van. Congratulations on the videos!
Great images Tom
Wow beautiful camera. 👍
The CineStill is fantastic under lights in studio or at night. It is fantastic for lighted concerts.
Tom I always look forward to your videos each week and greatly appreciate your format, personality and dedication to the craft! I never really leave comments but just wanted to say cheers from Scotland and thanks for the continued inspiration 👍
Best,
Derek
Hi Derek, thanks a lot for your comment. It's always nice when people who don't usually write, choose to do so. Much appreciated 👍👍
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto Cheers!
Honestly, I think that road trips are rarely unnecessary. Me and my wife always feel most at home when we are in the car together taking a long and possibly sub-“optimal” route to some new coastal town or walking route. Glad you enjoyed yourself mate, looking forward to seeing some images from the xpan!
Both the 45mm and 90mm lenses are brilliant!
These photos were too damn good to for just messing around and getting a grip with it. Really looking forward to seeing the ones in future videos now!
It is again so enjoyable, great fun seeing you pick up such a piece of nice equipment and the fun in the film excitement!
Pretty cheap cost for such an epic Ferry Passage. It would have been twice that in CDN $ crossing from Nova Scotia Annapolis Valley across Bay of Fundy. And you have all of those wonderful countries in front of you. I'm envious. Hahaha. Enjoy the new camera.
You have a knack of making the mundane look exciting! Great vid.
I thought you were getting a digital back for your 501,surprise. Good luck with that,it is a nice camera! Pretty nice exposures with it. Fun video, thanks as always.
I am jealous. Have fun with the new camera!
Thomas what a great excuse for a road trip, love the 3 pict from Sweden can wait for the next one, enjoy the camera and be safe...
you deserve that camera! What great news that you finally have one 😊😊😊😊
I remember when you borrowed one years ago and you got some great shots. If ever got back into film that would be the camera for me, because it provides a format that digital just doesn't have, especially for scenes with movement like waves, where stitching is problematic.
Good one. It has a story!
That is great camera and I have that same camera . I love it !!! That camera price has gone crazy up up .....Can't believe it.
Enjoy the Xpan!!! I will join you in pano-ville soon enough! Thank you for consistently youtubing your photo adventures.
your videos are wholesome Tom.
can even watch you driving around Europe (and complaining haha) all day :)
good luck with the xPan!
It was rolling back the years for me, I won a Hasselblad Xpan and also shot Ektachrome slide film with it! I kept it for a couple of years but did not use it a lot, when money got tight I sold it such is life, looking back that was another mistake but the kids had to be fed and there was a morgage to pay! Enjoy your new camera Thomas and like everyone else we look forward to see some great pictures that you have taken with it! Thank you for the trip to Sweden I have never been there....
I really enjoy your channel on you tube and the lovely photos you share. I love the wide format. I often stitch mine together to make panos, or crop the top and bottom of a full frame picture.
Great Video Thoms, thanks for sharing
Well cool, thoroughly enjoyable video
Awesome...can't wait to see more photos from that camera.
