- This Nintendo Game & Watch belongs to a viewer, he says that it's got fresh batteries in but won't come on at all.
Let's see if we can work out why!
Hope you enjoy!
Steve
PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

My father was a watchmaker and had a small jewelry, optics and watch shop when I was young. Here in Germany those "Game and watch" things were sold under the "Seiko" brand in watchmaker's shops. So I was a very happy kid in the early 1980s. It was always a challenge for me, though, to keep those things clean and un-scratched so my dad could still sell them when I was done with the game.... Nice memories.
Umm, you just don't rebrand Nintendo to Seiko. It's like rebranding Adidas to Nike.
@@Njazmo There is a Seiko Alba Super Mario Collaboration Model ACCA701. But I can't find anything about Seiko making Nintendo Game and Watches, or making any pocket/handhelds like them.
Uhm..... Well they were. I remember those.@@Njazmo
@@donnierussellii4659 his memory is wrong about the Seiko branding ; but he is right about the fact in europe ; or at least ; france ; western germany and belgium used to sell those in watch shops, at least thats where i had to go to get mine ..... .
then again ; back in those days dedicated video game stores didn t exist or close to non existant. youd find stuff in big stores but most of the time ( you"d get your consol or other electroonics from Sears ; radio shack & co in usa ; and either supermarket chains or dedicated shops like Darty or FNAC; for the game & watch stuff you d go to a watch store.
@donnierussellii4659 Seiko also did a collaboration with Capcom for Street Fighter V watch. But yeah, Seiko definitely didn't make any video games handheld. Personally I was never a fan of Game & Watch always thought they had inferior games that weren't that fun to play.
Loving this channel.. only problem is it makes me want to buy broken shit from Ebay thinking I can fix it, which i absolutelywouldnt be able to.. which will just result in me having loads of broken stuff 😂
I'm resisting the urge but I might be fighting a losing battle! 🤪😆🤣
Welcome to my over optimistic pile!
I did that with a bunch of consoles. Then I got a job as an electronic repairs technician 😊
Haha save yuh money!
For capacitor replacement like this, with a blown via or pad, I just don’t clip the leads and use the leg on the back side to complete the trace. Good job!👍
I use copper tape to repair the traces
Wow, that takes me back to my childhood. Spent hours on that game as a kid.
I wanted to give you an advice multiple times, but this episode is perfect for it. Never make any "hard" structural connections that "fight" against vibrations/deformations. It's much more reliable to make the connections using thinner wire and allowing them to float/bend/flex in those cases where a contact has potential to move. This comes from many years of experience. I did this mistake many times before :)
Well said. I learned that from the same place you did... the school of hard knocks. :)
Part of the entertainment value of this channel is that he makes the same mistakes over and over again.
Agreed, and let me add another advice to this. When repairing battery corrossion damage, work extremely thouroughly or the forming of new damage will go on. Remove ALL "chrystals" and rinse the PCB to neutralise this stuff, or it will go on eating the PCB.
Love the honesty of these repairs!
I used to fault find down to component level.
Also nothing wrong with keeping it real with the British way of saying things!
I work for an American company so it is hard not to say "routed" instead of "routed"
Congrats on 122 days without melting plastic.
That’s a “Solid” run. You should have a faux special episode when you hit 200.
Nice fix and its Aluminium !.....cheers.
Days since last capacitor melted. Zero. 7:19. Nice video Steve. 😊 Thanks.😅
Yet more enjoyment from a retro gamer fix :) thanks.
Thanks Banxy! 😍
Every time you are dealing with stuff like this always suspect a battery leakage because people always leave the batteries inside these little thingies. And always clean the carbon pads, maybe it's just dirty contacts. Also, check the faceplate that came off, the sound issue might be something as simple as you didn't turn on the sound (the faceplate shows which button does what).
And when you are repaining corroded traces, make sure you remove EVERY bit of damaged material because the acid that caused the damage can still seep forward under the OG soldermask if you don't clean it properly. Fixing the currently broken trace is not enough.
Love the music on this one during the trace repair... huge 80's vibe. Thanks!
Is there a track name or download link???
You have to be super skilled to carry out these repairs. Great channel that deserves 10x more subscribers.
Ive still got my game from the early 80's same as this one. Still in box and still works!!!
Hi from Australia
I can no longer say or hear the word “solid” without having been influenced by these videos.
You say it like it's a bad thing
😂 influenced in a positive way. These videos are enriching and therapeutic. So glad to have found this channel. 😁👍
I want to say it multiple times and change the inflection of my voice each time 😂
@@njones621 i believe Steve derived it from Northridgefix since Alex is always saying solid lol
"Multimeter in continuity" has entered my vernacular as well
Bought this game back in 1982. It became an obsession. I clocked it once. Gave it up as it was wasting too much of my time! Nice repair.
One of the best repair channels on YT. Love to watch your work and you have such a great personality. Never change :)
the other trace for that capacitor at 19:07 also appears slightly lifted....it may cause a problem down the line. There is a crease in the green trace there... Good job on the repair.
I always love you videos Steve! Been an avid fixer for 20 plus years! Only wish there was one a day now I have watched your entire back catalog!
Keep up the good work.
Man that thing takes me back to my childhood. I didnt have one of those specifically but I had a few of those little game systems that only had a handful of spots on the screen where anything could be displayed. Quite a bit different than the gaming I do today! While I do love modern day gaming, I'd honestly go back to those old days of I could. The world suck a whole lot less then.
I had that game as a kid!! Just the sound of it brings back so many memories!
I had this game as a child. Brings back memories... Great repair 👍
Seeing this old Nintendo treasure get a new lease on life warms my soul. Great video!
Had one of these in the 80s. Brings back memories.
I've just stumbled across your channel, and I'm just in awe...I'm obsessed now, so im away to binge watch your videos. 😁
Enjoyed some of the shots during the masking that showed just how tiny the electronics really were and how microscopic the repairs. Great fix
This was exactly that game that started how Nintendo came to Sweden. Owe Bergsten the owner of the a small radio dealer (Bergsala) visited Japan in 1981 where he bought it on his way home. Later Bergsala did a collaboration with Nintendo for Sweden and later the entire Nordic region (except Iceland).
A fun fact that Sweden could have been the first in the world to bring in the Famicom (outside Japan). But Nintendo pulled out when the deal was almost done. Nintendo decided to wait with the launch of the Famicom in Sweden because Nintendo of America was going to test the market in the fall of 1985 in New York for a redesigned model that was named the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). In addition, Nintendo thought there would be problems if Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland had a Famicom console while the rest of European countries had an NES console.
Edit: Thanks for all the love (thumbs up) guys!
Well done Steve! another solid fix.
I saw that capacitor off when you first soldered on and couldn't believe you didn't see it too. Lol
Good work as usual finding it.
As always, love the videos and your sense of humor.
Steves got the best music taste. Like futuristic 80s synth vibe. Its awesome.
Another 'Solid' effort Steve. Well done!
I had this as a kid, loved it, still got it. Used to come home from school and mum had destroyed my high scores!
Nicely done Steve!😊
Whenever I see one of those Game & Watch Games, I always think of the Film: K9 starring James Belushi & Jerry-Lee (The Alsatian), The one Clip is where he’s on a Stake-out waiting for his Pizza! 😂
The best part of your videos IMO are the songs...and the blank stares at the camera. A super cut of blank stares would be crack'n!
Great job. Really good screen as well. I repaired my Game and Watch Donkey Kong button contacts recently by using a normal graphite pencil, carefully drawing on the contacts. Still work, months later.
I rememebr these games from school... Found you from Kip, happy to be new sub! Keep up the great videos...
Great fix Steve well done bud 😊
Brings back memories, had this game many years ago
Thanks again for another Entertaining video!
Hi, Steve. I like your songs. So everybody does not hate your songs.
Lovely parachute video repair
nicely done fix
Thanks for the great content!
Ooh seen these really neat for a 80's item
I had one of these as a kid. I played it for hours on end.
I sold it years later. I still regret it.
Steve, my wife loves you and your antics with solid 😂😂😂😂
Had this as a kid, best game and watch parachute game ever!
Nice repair video.
Great repair my friend 😅😅😅
Nice! Always entertaining and you never fail to make me laugh.
i love this man, your videos are are amazing!!
I didn’t ever own the game and watch , I did however have many of the Tiger handheld games . Some of which I may have procured in an illegal manner 😂.
Being a kid back then was easier , a lot less stressful. Thanks for the video Steve !
Parachute! One of the most fun G&W games. You lucky man.
sweet fix m8 👍 keep them coming please luv it
Melted platic @ 07:19 ^^
Nice Work
I remember having that game as a kid, I used to love it.😂
I had one of those growing up. Found it’s way all the way to South Africa
I loved that game - I clocked it when I was about 8 or 9 years old.
"Can I FIX It?" ...yes you can Dave... Steeve... Solid. :)
The little hampster guy is the best!! I wait 4 him lol
Oooh, I'm getting good at this, because my first thought, when you ran the part of the cut leg, was: "But what about the other side." 😂
I had a few of these, i had Octopus, Oil Panic, Safe Craker and a Mickey Mouse one, but unfortunately they were all destroyed in a messy breakup so good news if you have these, they are slightly rarer with mine all destroyed.
Well done Steve! For Science !
OMG! I had this one and surely I haven't thrown this away. Need some serious digging. The guys get caught on the trees, hang there till they don't and then you have 2 frames to go catch them. Can't remember what the gorillas do. It had a clock and alarm. Maybe the gorillas chimes the bell for the alarm...
Solid bodge! 👍
my favorite game is metal gear 7:38
Old guy here tech school but didn't end up doing that ;(. By watching your channel i just got a urge to repair ou upgrade things i own to USBC LOL! Ordered butch of stuff, will upgrade my Blue Yetti mic since the micro usb is starting to wear off ! :)
For a cheap alternative to solder mask, buy a bottle of green nail varnish from poundland. Brush included. No uv needed!
Caps have a big tolerance, 11uf is fine.
In most cases 10 to 20% difference is considered normal.
Nice fix👍
Normally the writing on standard electrolytics says "-10 +80%". So a 10 micropuff cap is fine if it has anything between 9 and 18 mmF.
That takes me back. I had the Turtle Bridge game.
I had this exaclty one and I loved it back then
If you can get any (RS used to sell it) there is a great abrasive rubber called "Garryflex". Literally a pencil eraser with grit in it. I used to use it ALL the time when i was soldering and repairing tracks at work. Great stuff.
"It helps when their legs are bent like that so you can't get the blooming thing out"
That's what she said!!!
I loved that game! I forgot completely about having it when I was a kid!
BTW I can’t believe it I’ve just finished filming my latest vid and I’m not kidding I did the “LIKE A GLOOOVE” thing (my voice, no video clip though)
I swear we have some weird synchronicity thing going on! 🤯
Nice fix Steve even tho u broke the cap connection
Like a Glove! I usually say that when parking my car, not many get the joke tho 😅
Damn that was some serious surgery and follow up procedure to get that down, worth it though given the age and value on those things now. 20 years ago I had about that many of them, real pleasure, but these days down to just a few and the price isn't worth it anymore. I really wish Nintendo would do a phone app of theirs to do this or some kind of game suite package on Switch/sequel handheld. I've still got Super Mario Bros, Pinball, Bombsweeper, and Mario Cement Factory (and the Nelsonic Zelda Watch) so it's better than nothing for sure, wish I still had Climber and Balloon Fight but the prices are what nightmares are made of. :D
Another great video (not sure about the steveoke (karaoke)at the end ) new subscriber so I am currently binging on your vids
Nice little tribute to Dave! Shame you didn't do Dave 2 could of had a matching pair (maybe next one you find)
The countdown theme made me lol!
I remember myself and my younger sister using ours on long car jouneys, I think they were both snoopy tennis or something, mines still boxed sitting in my wardrobe, wonder if it still works, will have to take it out and try it again some time, great memories.
Brings back memories
my firstt game I ever had as a kid. Magic
Yo, that ray tracing looks sick.
You should try to communicate with little Gordon the gopher. I think he may be very helpful.
The memories of this game ❤
Wonderful
Wish I could stop smiling when you say micro fart- The German autobahn had me in stiches!
You legend big fan and have inspired me todo my own channel 😄😄😄
Solid!
Ahh I remember this one! ( I am 55)😁
I have a storage shed full of old broken crap like this. I wish you were local. lol.
well done
The bridge is out!
Could tell the Steve wasn't really feeling this one, so he deserves two pints of Scrumpy and an extra big bag of pork scratchings this time.
13:10 Can we get a link to the wire you use for trace repair please Mr. Steve?
Hey, nice video as always. What kind of microscope are you using?
What gauge of wire is it that you use there for trace repair? I started doing repairs recently and am still learning
6:14 You can actually see the right contact tearing off. And I thought it was fixed when replacing the capacitor but apparently it wasn't.
