My father was a watchmaker and had a small jewelry, optics and watch shop when I was young. Here in Germany those "Game and watch" things were sold under the "Seiko" brand in watchmaker's shops. So I was a very happy kid in the early 1980s. It was always a challenge for me, though, to keep those things clean and un-scratched so my dad could still sell them when I was done with the game.... Nice memories.
@@Njazmo There is a Seiko Alba Super Mario Collaboration Model ACCA701. But I can't find anything about Seiko making Nintendo Game and Watches, or making any pocket/handhelds like them.
@@donnierussellii4659 his memory is wrong about the Seiko branding ; but he is right about the fact in europe ; or at least ; france ; western germany and belgium used to sell those in watch shops, at least thats where i had to go to get mine ..... . then again ; back in those days dedicated video game stores didn t exist or close to non existant. youd find stuff in big stores but most of the time ( you"d get your consol or other electroonics from Sears ; radio shack & co in usa ; and either supermarket chains or dedicated shops like Darty or FNAC; for the game & watch stuff you d go to a watch store.
@donnierussellii4659 Seiko also did a collaboration with Capcom for Street Fighter V watch. But yeah, Seiko definitely didn't make any video games handheld. Personally I was never a fan of Game & Watch always thought they had inferior games that weren't that fun to play.
For capacitor replacement like this, with a blown via or pad, I just don’t clip the leads and use the leg on the back side to complete the trace. Good job!👍
I wanted to give you an advice multiple times, but this episode is perfect for it. Never make any "hard" structural connections that "fight" against vibrations/deformations. It's much more reliable to make the connections using thinner wire and allowing them to float/bend/flex in those cases where a contact has potential to move. This comes from many years of experience. I did this mistake many times before :)
Agreed, and let me add another advice to this. When repairing battery corrossion damage, work extremely thouroughly or the forming of new damage will go on. Remove ALL "chrystals" and rinse the PCB to neutralise this stuff, or it will go on eating the PCB.
Hell yeah, I am now 51. Loved playing Parachute, Octopus, Manhole, Fire attack, Fire, Mario's cement factory, Snoopy Tennis, and of course all the Donkey Kong game and watch games. And not to forget the boxing game on the calculator etc etc etc. Got my ones in Rarotonga while on holiday with my parents.
Love the honesty of these repairs! I used to fault find down to component level. Also nothing wrong with keeping it real with the British way of saying things! I work for an American company so it is hard not to say "routed" instead of "routed"
Everything you are doing in this video is fascinating and easy to follow. But I tried doing electronics at college 30 years ago. It was incredibly overwhelming and I left after a few weeks. But now I’d happily pay someone to sit in a class and do exactly what you’re doing in this video. You make it so easy to understand!
Loving this channel.. only problem is it makes me want to buy broken shit from Ebay thinking I can fix it, which i absolutelywouldnt be able to.. which will just result in me having loads of broken stuff 😂
Great job. Really good screen as well. I repaired my Game and Watch Donkey Kong button contacts recently by using a normal graphite pencil, carefully drawing on the contacts. Still work, months later.
the other trace for that capacitor at 19:07 also appears slightly lifted....it may cause a problem down the line. There is a crease in the green trace there... Good job on the repair.
Man that thing takes me back to my childhood. I didnt have one of those specifically but I had a few of those little game systems that only had a handful of spots on the screen where anything could be displayed. Quite a bit different than the gaming I do today! While I do love modern day gaming, I'd honestly go back to those old days of I could. The world suck a whole lot less then.
Every time you are dealing with stuff like this always suspect a battery leakage because people always leave the batteries inside these little thingies. And always clean the carbon pads, maybe it's just dirty contacts. Also, check the faceplate that came off, the sound issue might be something as simple as you didn't turn on the sound (the faceplate shows which button does what). And when you are repaining corroded traces, make sure you remove EVERY bit of damaged material because the acid that caused the damage can still seep forward under the OG soldermask if you don't clean it properly. Fixing the currently broken trace is not enough.
I have a Game and Watch Greenhouse - It is a 2 screen game like in this video where you zap the continuous infestation of bugs before they ate your plants. I think it was a Christmas present from the 80s and it is still working.
I always love you videos Steve! Been an avid fixer for 20 plus years! Only wish there was one a day now I have watched your entire back catalog! Keep up the good work.

OMG! I had this one and surely I haven't thrown this away. Need some serious digging. The guys get caught on the trees, hang there till they don't and then you have 2 frames to go catch them. Can't remember what the gorillas do. It had a clock and alarm. Maybe the gorillas chimes the bell for the alarm...
Damn that was some serious surgery and follow up procedure to get that down, worth it though given the age and value on those things now. 20 years ago I had about that many of them, real pleasure, but these days down to just a few and the price isn't worth it anymore. I really wish Nintendo would do a phone app of theirs to do this or some kind of game suite package on Switch/sequel handheld. I've still got Super Mario Bros, Pinball, Bombsweeper, and Mario Cement Factory (and the Nelsonic Zelda Watch) so it's better than nothing for sure, wish I still had Climber and Balloon Fight but the prices are what nightmares are made of. :D

Normally the writing on standard electrolytics says "-10 +80%". So a 10 micropuff cap is fine if it has anything between 9 and 18 mmF.
