- Big up to Colin for sending this over to me.
It's his Grandstand Invader From Space Game that has been sat in his loft and now no longer powers on!
Let's see if we can figure out why and get this thing working again!
Hope you enjoy!
Steve
PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

Stupid Broken Invader From Space
No replies? Lemme fix that
Now unbroken.
*GET IN!*
Please stop putting in all the screws until you are sure it is working properly.
The screws are metal but thread on plastic. And they are not designed to be put on and taken off many times. Your work is good, but you always make the same mistakes.
He also has glue...
Had this for Christmas, probably the same year the chap who sent it in. Bloody loved it. Happy days
Thanks for the mentions :) Those D882's are seemingly VERY faulty - probably good you have some stocked, because they are in a lot of Grandstand toys of that vintage!
Oooh, thanks Kip. Might have to hunt down some more Grandstand-y type things! 😍
The company is from Harrogate, if memory serves.
I had one of these back in the day.... Amazing how familiar the sound was, having not heard it for 40+ years.
I used to play it for months on end. Great Xmas present.
On the Outro, I hear these string instruments coming in, and I thought to myself, that sounds like nothing compares to you, and then it was! Thanks for the smiles! Stupid song!
No interest in electronics….no interest in computer games…….totally enthralling!! I can’t stop watching, don’t know why but keep it up fella! 😁
These videos are so calming and fun to watch. Thanks for giving me some good stuff to watch while I’m stuck in bed. Stay well
I binge watched a load of his clips while I was laid up in bed with a bad back, very therapeutic bloink, hope you're well now :)
Sorry lil buddy, he doesn’t care. Get well soon! 🤗
You should probably put the transistor into a component tester and try and reverse engineer what it is in case it ever fails in the future. As it's unmarked.
OMG it's Pierce Brosnan. Just yesterday I was thinking of that tabloid picture of you in a head shop, buying a giant b**g. Good times.
Came here to day that. At least so we know if it’s PNP or NPN.
That component tester costs nothing. Designed by a German as opensource now made by the Chinese #getin
The little one looks like any old NPN or PNP bipolar junction transistor (BJT).
BC 548 or 558. 99,9% sure.
I stumbled across your videos a week ago and I’m glad I did! Fantastic stuff! Love the fault finding process unfolding. You put a serious amount into each video, a lot of people would just open it fix it and show it working. keep up the good work! “Peace”
Well done. The spring contact on the barrel jack looked to be very loose and sometimes you can remove that contact and bend it to apply more pressure on the centre pin. They get knackered quite easily.
Seems you are fixing all my old games, first the pacman 2 and now invaders from space. All I need now is for you to do Grandstand Astro Wars and Entex Turtles and you will have done my childhood. Another great fix video
I would like to see you create an electrical solution to lower the volume of the buzzer. Might it be as simple as adding a resistor in series? No cheating by putting a piece of foam tape over the hole...
I´ve been following for quite a while now, and I have to say that your singing skills have been improving exponentially. Not a meme anymore🤘🤪
I would love to see a video or a short showing the full process of recording a song, showing software, efects, how you do and process the backtracks and such. Even though would be something very unrelated with your niche, it also would be a very interesting video. Just throwing thoughts on here🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I would never have guessed it was not the part getting hot. Like holy crap
I like Steve's devotion to the complete reassembly. Shows confidence in his repair. I have stuff I've fixed which has never gone totally back together.
Tell me about it. I fixed an XBOX 360 a while ago. It's a nightmarish console because the casing is all plastic clips, and could I get it back together again?! I left it as a fail because messing about with it anymore was going to completely destroy the casing lol!
They end up being more of a pain then they are worth the money to buy a new one haha. Those clips are absolutely horrible.
@@BaneGamesOfficial Thankfully I was just using it as a practise piece, I'm really only a beginner. Managed to fix a couple of consoles so far, and now an old walkman lol! Steve's videos are a great help.
Such a great sense of humor and excellent troubleshooting skills. Keep at it, mate!
DAMN I remember this!! Ranks up there with Astro Wars and Firefox as my favourite childhood games. Great fix of some timeless hardware.
The outro song will haunt me for days however.....
😂 I aim to please 🤣
Had this and a an even more basic Battlestar Galactica game. Loved them 😃
i had one in the 80's loved it
I’d love to have one of those thermal cameras. Well done, sir!
Wow I used to have one of those when I was a kid but the tiny joystick was always breaking! But having Space Invaders in your hand at home was an incredible feeling, used to have to cycle 5 miles to the nearest Real Space Invaders arcade machine
Te sigo desde España y hay veces que no llego a entender todo lo que dices porque no domino el inglés pero aún y así estoy totalmente enganchado a tus vídeos. Un fuerte abrazo!😊
Nice choice of music! I was waiting for Sreten to say: Coooming up!
LoL the song in the end. Also I would of changed the caps, well since its probably the only thing to go wrong with it in the near future. That thing is built like a tank.
I had that game when I was a kid and I loved it!
Some resistor to reduce volume output would be awesome
i wonder if a 3.5 mm audio jack mod is possible as well as a resister to lower output
Every time I watch one of these vids I find myself on eBay looking for faulty stuff to repair, only to eventually rein myself in by telling myself “where would you put it once fixed, you don’t need anymore stuff you’ll never use”.
It’s always a narrow escape.
But still, I come back for more.
Well done on the will power. It is a slippery slope.
Wish I had the willpower. I actually bought equipment like a soldering station before figuring out I don't know what I'm doing and have no place to actually work on things. 😀
@@CalculatorObsessed
I can relate to that, I started doing xbox ones after watching ste and joey does tech. Ended up with 6 of em but managed to fix 2 and make a profit but too many sellers tell lies on ebay. Come to think of it I had a buyer say he hadn't received a package and eBay refunded him even tho it was delivered the next day, so he got the products and his money back. I appealled thru ebay but they didn't want to know and still took sellers fee from me. Buyer was pixel-outlet. Has a shop in London pixel direct. Dodgy character. I'm trying to ruin him so he can't rip anyone else off.
Will my dishwasher fit in your PO box?
Stupid dishwasher 😊
I remember getting that for Xmas about 40 years ago I thought it was advanced at the time
Nothing compares to Dave
Those sockets for barrel jacks are a common failure point. I’ve “repaired” loads of 1970s calculators just by cleaning them or the switches. More frustrating when they no longer spring properly, and are of a sealed design.
Also, sometimes when the battery contacts look clean they can have a film on them which can increase resistance, and a drop in voltage at the board. Not sure if it is from the plasticiser as I have noticed this is more common where the plastic has become particularly brittle. Anyway, a quick clean of the battery contacts can be worth while, even if they look clean.
Anyway, great fix, really enjoyed the video.
You need to start powering things off a bench supply rather than batteries. You can control the current, in case of a short, and also see the current draw to see if anything is alive. Any repairs I do are always on the bench psu first.
Remember fets are switched on if you use diode mode on the gate and source which will then give a short on g drain to source
god, i had that one when i was a kid too and yeah, trying to play that while you were supposed to be sleeping never worked out too well.
Good to see that there is more than only easy fixes.
it might be handy to get one of those cheap component tester to test and identify components at the same time.
i think he has one lol
Awesome job! I love watching you fix these broken handhelds. What will be next?
Your pan face comedy & timing of it, whilst fixing electronics is superb!
I'm glad I subbed.
When I work with electronics, I get all autistic with having everything at hand, & pages of handwritten diagrams & schematics, it's ridiculous!😅
Nice repair work. I have been trying to get my head around electronics for a while, always kinda fun to tinker. By the way it looks like you accidentally bypassed the power socket without realizing seems you already fixed that bit.
Why didn't you test the new Mosfet to compare to the other that you removed before soldering it in?
VFD Display ! Love it !!!
Any chance you could do a video on what you recommended ways to get started doing this stuff?
The outro was top notch! :P
Thanks for the Sinead O'Conner outro cover. Sad she passed recently. Great repair as always!
wow! I used to have , & love, one of these back in the early 80s. Wonder where it is now, probably in some landfill somewhere
Yes ! Am about to fix same game I had 44 years ago , it's just a soldering wire job
When adding components back in always strip all the old solder away using sucker or wick and lay an new pad with minimal solder. The rule of thumb is lay a piece of solder from corner to corner and let it flow, then add you component and heat. Do not add more solder! Best of luck in the future.
OMG I had one of these! Had to put tape over the speaker to dull the sound down. It was sooo LOUD!!!
Hey buddy, I love watching your videos. You've come so far since the first uploads. Only advice I can give you, is to practice your component testing methods a little more. For example, the component you thought was a MOSFET (D882), is actually a transistor...so your reading of a short between 2 of the pins is a clear sign of failure. However, if it was actually a MOSFET, a short between 2 of the pins is exactly what you would expect after triggering the gate (3rd pin) with your positive probe. Download every datasheet you can. Datasheets will give you all the info you need - Allowing you to fully understand your measurements and if they indicate that the component has failed. Keep up the great work mate!
hahahahah the outro song. love it
Nice 1 Steve great content as always 👍
I had this exact game, I'm guessing early 80's about £20 if I remember right. The coloured filter used on the screen sparked the memory! 😂
Great video
Man this gave me so much nostalgia had one of these as a kid it took me right back
That's a good looking internal pcb thingy.
I was NOT expecting it to work by replacing that MOSFET!!!! I thought it was FOR SURE the piece that was overheating... HAHA!!! GOOD JOB!!!!
D882, or full title 2sd882, is not a MOSFET, just a medium power bipolar transistor.
That outro was hilarious. Quality video as always!
Nothing compares to a successful repair
I wish I knew how to use voltmeter, I could have saved loads of my old electronic stuff, love your channel Stez, apart from the singing ;)
Another fantastic repair!!
we had one of these when we were kids- like Colin we were regularly able to ace the game by scoring 1000+ points the main trick was to time shooting in-between beeps
Nice one ! I would have replaced the first transistor but no markings hummmm
Congrats !
I think missing the spring, or somthing like this, begind the plate. If you put the DC charger, this spring its compresed and not continuity for positive of batterys.
Love the ' Nothing Compares To You ' spoof at the end Steve.
Shame about the original artist,i suppose .
I remember having one of these for Xmas myself I was really disappointed because the battery is only lasted half an hour had to wait for the shops to open to get a plug-in transformer for it. No I did the same love the machine
Currently power watching your entire library buddy.
Please tell me where you get the copyright free tunes? 😊
Another fantastic fix, nice one!
I got so used to the patreon rap ending with Munkeyjoe Tokyo that it feels strange when it doesn't end that way
Btw I love your selection of 80s synth right out of rocky man training montage
Did you clean the flux off afterwards?
Those tracks are fire! Where do you get them?
Here's something funny, a few years back, I slung an old Windows 98 PC motherboard in my scrap box because I didn't get any response from it(dead).
About a year ago, I dug it out, dusted it off, & everything looked ok, I installed an AMD K6-2 CPU 400mhz, & 2x 128mb RAM , & I could access the BIOS when before, it was nothing! It's weird that something doesn't work at one time, only for it to work later on, & you didn't do any repairs on it! It's the definition of having a ghost in the machine!
Love the ending Jam
So did you bypass the power jack or end up putting it back in ? I saw an extra piece of wire on your mat and I didn't remember which way the wires were to start with .
Love your videos, inspires me to tinker with broken shiz!
Heheheh.. "Or is it?!"
😁
I like how it’s only one invader from space. Their military had to cut back, and so they just sent one… was mildly frightening. Kind of like a Chinese spy balloon.
Nicely done Steve!
i actually had one as a kid. think my nan and grandad bought me it. its funny but when you got it working, i so remember the sounds. must be 40 years back
I have one of these, bought it because my dad had one and I wanted to huff some grade A nostalgia
Got one. Still works
That circuit is a voltage regulator circuit for the board & that small transister could be replaced with any npn (low power) transister like a 2N5551, as it is the driver for the bigger transister.
@StezStixFix Sorry, too busy making circuit boards on my new CNC machine, no more ferric chloride etching, which I have been doing for the last 20 years, lol!
Replace any electro caps, particularly the 45 volt rail to the VFD (usually 50v or 63v caps).
That will return the VFD to full brightness and reduce heating in the inverter transistor (the one you replaced)
Oh god,i had this for Christmas as a kid,i played it and played it!!!
I see it coming when the humming sound started ... great outro😂
I had this as a kid loved it as would reach the top score of 999
I always check if there is continuity through the power led before testing other circuitry.
As always, always a pleasure watching your videos. Regards Steve.
I think I put a piece of tape over the 'speaker grill'. It helped a little
I had one of these and 999 was pretty achievable if you got 'in the zone' - you got a great little 'dee-du-day-du' repeating beep loop if you cleared it. As satisfying as crashing Tetris LOL.
Hi I have made a cheap FM rasio kit from Aliexpress infact I have made 2 I cannot see where I have gone wrong would you be up to have a look to see wjhat I have done wrong or would it be a faulty componant? thanking you StezStix brgds Roger
The guts remind me of a game I used to have, a Tomytronic Cosmic Combat game from about 1980. Wonder if it's a repackaged version?
My guilty pleasure is to listen to what Steve will sing at the end of each video 🙃
He, he. That brought back memories of my childhood. Had one too, it stopped working so I opened it up and could see where the glass screen is pinched together at the bottom, there appears to be burn marks, so I presumed the screen had burnt out or something. Of course, I blamed my brother 😂.
Love electronics.. That display his amazing saying that exclent videos wish you well
That was great fun! Another win.
Love your vids! Outro hilarious!
That one fought back today.
Mine won't power on as well 😢
6:49 I was thinking the same thing not 10 seconds prior. 😅
Get a Peak DCA55 for basic transistor testing, Ste. It'll make your life easier.
No way, I had one of those 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
