The chat really shows what Hayden meant in her tumblr post about the irony epidemic. People in the chat were so annoying, making jokes and other comments. What annoyed me most was a comment that said “I’m very dramatic ahh song”, like what? Can people not be serious with their music and art? Music snobs are so annoying.
The ones being annoying aren't music snobs, it's the people who don't have appreciation, or articulation for that matter. They're in his chat to clown on things, not actively critique.
wtf "wake me up inside" has to do with this song? they don't even sound the same, this is what Hayden has been saying, people really don't take her art, music serious.
i genuinely don't understand or see where he's coming from when he compares a song to other songs by different artists he always picks the most random song choices to compare with
@@jenn9049 I don’t hear him comparing this song to others for criticism. I think he’s just saying a lot of Ethel fans’ can dive deeper into experimental music if they knew about it.
@@MenchieExtrakt i see where you're coming from . i'm not talking only about this review so many review videos for a variety of albums in them his comparisons were so random
The chat saying its boring?? Tasteless ass people! Its not supposed to be a jumpy, explosive song! The idea of it is to envoke an emotion! Its supposed to be slow. It's sad and it's as if the song itself is griefing. Some people really can't see art when it's being thrown at their face smh🙄
@@Moonsong_ fr! I had my playlist on shuffle. And the way when this played, my smile DROPPED. And everything felt heavy, and I couldn't help but to just stare at nothing and just space out to the sound of it. It's so perfectly crafted 😭😭
Chat is the definition of people that are narrow minded. Ethel has already stated time and time again how her music is like a painting to her. I hate how people just don’t understand her artistry because if they did they would absolutely see a different perspective of her music
I love this song. Funnily enough, i had no idea who Hayden was, and then I got recommended a Zelda unboxing by Ethel Cain, which made me check our her art.
i don't understand the point of the final remark. what do the influences she's exposed to have anything to do with appreciating her music as a standalone creative project? do we need to listen to the entire chain of influences that came before an artist's final product? where would we stop, at cavemen music? like what's the point. we know there's a whole world of music out there. no need to be condescending. i've always had a problem with people who consume music the way fantano and his audience consume music, like it's a completion challenge and you need to unlock achievements like you're playing a videogame.
As someone who likes a lot of the other types of artists im assuming he's referencing here, i think this is kind of a reductionistic take? And like missing why she appeals to people over some of those other artists like chelsea wolfe, jesu, grouper, midwife, whoever? Preachers daughter really didnt click with me at first and i kind of felt like tony did here, its grown on me a lot over time, but to kind of insinuate like her stuff is a watered down version of these influences is again, just seems to be missing the point of her appeal as an artist and being a little bit patronizing about it...
Same with Preacher's daughter. At first, I liked a few songs. But now? The WHOLE freaking album is one of my TOPS! It's so freaking good! And the lore? Please 😭
@@scarletstarlet2012 i mean thats kind of my point though, shes not more watered down for having more mass appeal, it also doesnt mean she sacrifices the more underground components of her music either in having that appeal, it just seems like in melon's perspective he has someone in mind, like chelsea wolfe or something, that in his head sounds similar to what ethel's doing but with more artistry and a better execution or something- and i think in doing that has a kinda patronizing approach when talking wbout her music and misses her actual appeal as an artist because he thinks that he gets it, that its the same appeal as these other indie artists but more watered down... but hes just missing the point. And its fine if he truly just doesnt like her stuff, cool, but the comparison thing is annoying imo and not great for musical dissection- kinda like how fixated he was with the lcd soundsystem comparison framework with the latest dare record instead of seeing it for the meta gossip girl trashy indie music revivalism it was clearly actually drawing from, even though i fully understand drawing that comparison is was such a fixation in the review and i dont think lcd was actually as much of a reference point for that album as he thinks they were.. Also to be clear, im not like a mad ethel fan who came here, im an avid fantano watcher, i even only listened to preachers daughter initially bc of seeing his review
@jkoreosrock again, in a patronizing way. Spreading the good music around bc he thinks ethel is like a watered down version of them or something, not just bc theyre adjacent artists but have less hype on them
I'm just discovering Ethel Cain and this track blew me away. Hit me emotionally in a unique way*. What would be some other examples of artists either that are other influences, or artists in this "world of music," as fantano is saying here?
The reason chat is so annoying is because it's set to sub only mode, so they will be extremely parasocial towards fantano. I hope fantano realizes the benefits of letting everyone comment in his chat one day..
I like the song, I like Ethel, and I disagree with Anthony's comments on the song. However, calm down. It's music. Music is subjective. Everyone's opinions on music are valid since we all have our different experiences with it, and your opinion is equally as valid as his. As to why he's popular, he's able to verbalize his opinions in a succinct and entertaining way to a lot of people. You can disagree with his opinions, and he's definitely had some bad takes (the Halsey review in particular was quite tasteless). But don't act like he's not qualified.
god he is so arrogant. what makes him think people that like ethel cain aren’t aware of her influences? and even if they don’t, that doesn’t make them lesser than or something.

annoying chat as always
Chat is sending out 1's 'cause of the poll asking for 1 if hot or 2 for not so they're actually liking the song

@MenchieExtrakt wake me up inside is not experimental in any sense of the word. Everyone knows evanescence, talk to literally any fan of ethel cain.

Literally, the texture of the sound alone is enough to keep me stuck in my headphones for hours listening to it.

"I am PUNISHed by love" while the heavy distorted or whatever it is guitar in the background screams sends me to heaven
been jamming this track constantly since it dropped, this is going to blow her early stuff out of the water

Grouper, Midwife, Chelsea Wolfe are three that I would recommend. They are also all big influences to Hayden!!
Listen to Sun Beach Files by her is such a song.
Chelsea Wolfe!
King Woman maybe. She’s definitely influenced by Nicole Dollanganger.
Skullcrusher, searows
i love two of her biggest influences: chelsea wolfe and nicole dollanganger
