There's a story behind the band's raw emotional reaction to the tribute performance. The guy in the bowler hat playing drums is their original drummer's son. John Bonham passed back in 1981. When they were being honoured, they wanted Jason there and he told them he couldn't be there. So, when they saw him on stage playing his dad's parts, in his dad's hat, it hit hard.

Thank you for this information. I did not know this. I knew about JB's son playing the drums there, but didn't know it was kept secret from LZ. That's an important dimension to the performance. So, again, thank you.

To me this band is the best of the best. They were super young and Rock n Roll was just beginning. No ding sounds the same. They take their musicianship to the highest level. They were born to do this.

When you said , "Your generation missed out on some of the best music ever made", you are right (in my opinion). Music from the 60's and 70's was full of passion and a message and some of it is still being listened to today. Kids, ask your parents / grandparents what music was like when they grew up and if your able, have a listen, you might be surprised.

The thing about rock music from back in the day is that it was all musical talent. The people actually played the instruments, the singers had to be able to sing...it was pure talent.

Many agree with you that the original can never be topped - after all , it set the standard. Ann and sister Nancy Wilson were not trying to top Led Zeppelin with their rendition in the tribute, they were paying respect to the kings who gave our generation an anthem. Ann and Nancy have done many, many Led Zeppelin songs throughout their career, including at least one cover in every concert (usually Black Dog, or Rock n' Roll), and it became the logical choice to ask them to be the ones to do the homage at the Kennedy Center Honors. Heart was always respectful in their covers and never tried to "make them their own". They stayed mostly true to the Zeppelin originals adding only a few minor personal tweaks. It takes Rock Godess's to pay proper tribute to Rock Gods. Two great reactions! I enjoyed them both!

Led Zeppelin was known for their extremely well crafted studio work. The reason people always want the live versions is because they already know the studio version, probably heard it a lot. And Zeppelin is fantastic live. But their songs were birthed in the studio.

Indeed. If you are unfamiliar with music, especially rock music before 1980, you are very much missing out. The Golden Age of Rock is the mid 60’s to the late 70’s and will never be duplicated. With all it’s sub-genres ( folk rock, psychedelic rock, blues rock, rock and roll, hard rock, acid rock, progressive rock, art rock, funk rock, pop rock, soul) it dominated culture, style, social and political thought, fashion, and the music business (recordings, the radio airwaves, live concerts) in such totality - exceeding everything else before or since. And it was real music. Real musicians playing real instruments in their own way, written by themselves, in their own timing. No sampling, no nitwits with computers, no autotune and protools, no nonsense. It is probably impossible to imagine in light of the last few decades of the music scene and song composition corporatization and homogenization into sameness.

There's a reason this song is on just about every list of the greatest song ever! The entire composition is brilliant! The lyrics were written with such an ambiguity that allows the listener to interpret them as they need to. The song builds as if you're actually climbing the Stairway to Heaven and then crescendos with that awesome Jimmy Page solo! As you dive deeper into their rabbit hole keep in mind, they were only Led Zeppelin for 12 years. Depending on the song, their sound crossed over into many different genres. Sometimes more than one genre in the same song! Welcome to Led Zeppelin! One of the greatest to ever do it!

🥰You felt it!! Beautiful. Love your genuine reactions and the way you feel the music. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!!😊
As others have said.... the 1973 Live at Madison Square Garden performance of this song is a MUST on a Led Zeppelin journey!!👊 Keep in mind, I was an infant when this song was released in 1971. Zeppelin was playing in my house growing up (I loved it) but did not understand the greatness of their music until the mid 80's (15yrs after it's release) when I entered high school. Their music is timeless.
Do yourself a huge favor and do the live at MSG 1973 performance of "Stairway". You won't regret it!!! It's a spiritual experience!!💯💯💯 Peace and light to all...✌💞

Led zep were ground breaking for their time as well as now . They formed in 68 first two albums 69 , this track is of their fourth album. Try reading the lyrics - they are ambiguous and mean different things to different people but well worth going into. In general terms it advocatas turning away from materialism towards finding spiritual contentment . Robert Plants happy place is Wales which is a very beautiful rural mountainous country on the west side of the uk - i look to the west and my spirit is crying for freedom ... he was involved in the intelligent end of the hippy movement in the 60's and this is reflected in his writing. the bustle in the hedgerow and the may queen refererences are about the renewal and coming back to life in the Spring. It fits perfectly with Jimmy Pages slow crescendo music which almost imperceptably increases in tempo , intensity and volume. there is also a gentle and beautifully expressed reminder that we are not immortal. As requested below you should definitley see the live version Madison Square Garden 1973 the perfomance is magical and Jimmy Pages guitar solo is legendary.
You will be kicking yourself if you do not do a deep dive into their music now impossible to describe the variety , muscianship , quality of writing and the magic that happens when these four men play together. worth doing stuff fromthe first album first just so you unfderstand the vision and evolution- Babe i'm gonna leave you , dazed and confused , your time is gonna come , i can't qiuit you baby , How many more times all unmissable off that album - the whole album is worth hearing. If you want a masterclass in percussion do the live version of Moby Dick - that'll bring you up to speed.

Over the last 50 some years of my listening to music from the 1920s to recently, there is something special about this era of music that lifts it above the rest. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, ACDC, the Beatles, Rolling Stones........you just cannot beat it. It is no surprise that in 2024, both the Beatles and Stones were on the top of the charts AGAIN! You just cannot beat the era before "Pitch Correct" was invented in 79, making out of tune singers magically match the pitch of the band with technology derived from the Hiel talk box. Suddenly everyone could sing, models, dancers,......a lot of very pretty people. Hence,...MTV was invented for those with faces for TV but their voices were not made for radio. That is why there are no "real" music videos before 1980ish. Not caring about the actual visuals and instead imagining them in your head beat music videos. For the best Led Zeppelin live, watch either their BBC sessions, or the 1973 SONG REMAINS THE SAME concert movie, for awesome live performances. Later in their career, their wear and tear was starting to show from the road. They seemed tired to me in Knebworth in 79, and Earl's court in 74 was still a little weary. They toured so much, it showed.

That’s why we used to go to the Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd laser light show at the museum of natural history. We would get a dose and then smoke all the way there and then watch the laser light show from Zepplin or Pink Floyd and talk about going to another world for real! It’s definitely that kind of music. It takes you on a journey.

I don't know if that's right Cliff. You do get this music. It's been made. It's like regretting not watching Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel, or not being their when Beethoven was composing Symphony No.9. This is art, this stays with us forever. You're listening 50 years later, in another 50 years this song will still be being played. It's the most beautiful thing about art, it makes us immortal. So as Jim Morrison said, "O Great Creator of Being: Give us one more hour to perform our art and perfect our lives."
