      How'd it go?

    absolutely brill video, I was really struggling with the tensioner, seems easy to put on but i count wrap my head on how it worked. it has a large spring inside the tensioner that didn't seem to do anything, the instructions said it was an automatic tensioner (this means to me that the spring applies the pressure on the belt ) in reality it is a manual tensioner that has an indicator. the secret spring only moves the tension indicator to tell YOU were and when to manually tighten the stud bolt that the hole tensioner sits on.
    masive help chers Reece

      Reece Manifold - totally agreed! That tensioner is so tricky that it took us like 20 mins just to figure out that you need to counter hold (manually) in place then tighten. This video saved the day!

    Tensioner can be released and retained into position using specific tooling. According to VAG procedure the camshaft sprocket does not need to be removed.

  • @joemorris22
    @joemorris22 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    why would you remove the camshaft gear when the belt tensioner is spring loaded. its so much easier to remove and install using the pin in the belt tensioner. fine timing adjustment is likely to be required using this method which is only possible with VCDS.

    Use only for SOHC PD era TDI engines. That's around 2004-2006. See my site for other years.

    On Tdc What position are the camshaft lobe on cilinder 1 are they point up like a V and the camshaft front notch witch the hub connect on it right on the top?

  • @marcelltheron
    @marcelltheron 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What happens if you turn the motor over at the camshaft?

    • @jakejoyce5555
      @jakejoyce5555 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re turning it over at the camshaft turn counter clockwise. I wouldn’t turn it over at the camshaft unless you plan on replacing your tensioner as it puts extra stress on it.

    can the timing affect the performance of a vehicle.

    • @lakewhiting9586
      @lakewhiting9586 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, very much so, but it won't just fix every engine problem. Bad timing can cause poor fuel efficiency, throttle response, and cause problems like cylinder misfires (at least in non-diesel engines).

    • @TrueBlueEG8
      @TrueBlueEG8 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No it isnt, as long as it goes back in before you tension the belt it wont be a problem. I have done hundreds of them like this.

    • @ralphmctell5210
      @ralphmctell5210 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TrueBlueEG8 yes it is a bad idea - why do you think the locking tool exists. He didn't need to remove the cam pulley either. belt would have slid off easily at the water pump at this point.

    I've just done the timing belt, engine looks same as this one, and now van wont start.
    Turns over normal, but doesn't fire. Seems like it's not getting diesel.
    I Locked the crank and cam as shown.

      Dude if your cam is shot it needs to Be removed to replace it. I’m doing mine right now. I took the engine apart without the locking tools as you really don’t need them to disassemble and replace the cam. I did buy them and am using to reinstall the timing belt since I want to be exact the first time. I could have done it without them though. Just have to watch the marks.
