    I really appreciate the care and diligence you showed with this job. Especially surprising for me was the fact that the overhead cam is not hardlinked to it's sprocket, instead taper-fitted like the chuck of a drill press. With a tapered fit, I'm surprised it isn't more common to have a problem with skipped timing. You put a lot of effort into making this video and it definitely showed.

    This is an excellent tutorial, very descriptive. With a job like this it's pretty easy to miss something. Thanks for helping us 'weekend mechanics' out.

    Very good camera work! Unlike some other videos posted on Utube I can understand your words, you speak clearly and your closeups are clear and in focus...Being a VW mechanic for over 34 years I can tell that you have "Been there, Done that" Good job!

    Absolutely the best automotive DIY video I have ever seen! I have been wanting to buy a TDI Jetta and just wanted to see how much of the PM I could do myself. I have a 99 F350 Powerstroke and do pretty much everything on it myself. Thanks for taking the time to do this so people like me can make an informed decision!

    Very useful tutorial. But as far as I know when you are replacing timing belt it might be good to change idler. Also note that it might be taken into consideration to replace water pump too (if it is leaking) keep a good job. Best regards from Europe. This tutorial is useful for VW Golf 1z engine, VW Polo SDI engine (1.7/1.9).

    Since you posted this a year ago, I hope you get this.
    Like yancey11 said, your speaking & presentation in the video are done very well. I have an 03 Jetta TDI and I'll need to change the timing belt soon. The '03 is a little different than the '98, but many of your details are similar to an '03. It would be great if you have a video to cover any differences.
    Thanks.

    Thanks for this great video. I am like you, just find or make something that works. Have a '97 Passat TDI that I was going to sell. It has 180k on it, and I was going to let it for 1500 bucks. I need to do this timing belt job, and will probably replace the water pump too. Also thinking that I'll take the starter out and check the brushes while I have the tools out. Glow plug harness broken...need to replace that. I especially liked your snap on socket solution. Thanks again.

    I agree with you service advisor, i would hate to make the call that its ok after inspection then to have it fail 10,000 miles later before the next inspection, to be honest i wouldn't make that call, and would recommend replacing as well regardless

  • @deathmetalscottie

    This is a great tutorial and much more comprehensive than most. One thing though, how much tension is too much tension? I have an ALH so very similar to the AHU/1Z. I tensioned the tensioner to the proper markings. However, the belt is super tight! Ususally on manual timing belt tensioners, I have tightened until there is about 90* flex in the belt. However, there is very little flex. Do TDI's require the belt to be this taught?

    • @BOHICA_
      @BOHICA_ 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Scott O'Doherty yes. The marks should line up on the tensioner. This mark allows for changes in the temp of the engine to be compensated.

    Your welcome, cant think of any shortcuts off the top of my head, if i remember correctly you need to pretty much lower the column remove all related fasteners etc, then tilt and pull dash back just enough to remove box,
    lol i can only imagine

    Nicely done. Do you figure on about an hour for this? It'd be great to have a list of all the "while you're there" jobs you do at the same time. Seems like it'd be a good time for accessory belts, valve cover gasket, etc..

    Can you tell me when a 2006 Ford Taurus SEL with a 3.0 L V6 (non Flex Fuel) timing chain should be replaced. I can not find a spec in the Ford Manual or All Data. I have 109,000 miles on it and was wondering when you would recommend doing it.

    I just had the water pump , timing belt and all pullies and thermostat replaced, car had no issues when dropped of, just had it done because I just bought the care at 147,000 miles . I did not know if it was done at the 100,00 mile mark and wanted to take care of it before any issues would arrive. Now we have white smoke smells like oil strong coming from the tail pipe, when we pull out and shift gears, also if we are in neutral and rev the engine, its strong of oil. Could they of got oil down the exhaust some how? The car has great pick up and runs good so far.

    Hi, thank you for taking the time to make this video. It really explained a lot to me as I'm wanting to replace the timing belt on my 2005 Jetta tdi. I have 109,000 miles on my timing belt, am I way over due to replace it?

    • @frummox
      @frummox 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are 19,000 miles overdue and on thin ice per the folks at the TDIclub. I have 102,000 on my 2004 Golf with manual tran, I hear it takes more stress if is an automatic. I am getting it changed soon because it is catastrophic if it fails.

    Great video, have two quick questions. My car is 2005 Golf1.9 TDI Comfortline and part I need to replace is drive belt tensioner as when mechanic replaced Timing belt they didnt have tensioner in stock. Is my Comfortline basically the same as in your video for Jetta to work on and is there anything in particular I should know when replacing tensioner.

  • @FarrelBuchinsky
    @FarrelBuchinsky 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    My 2005 Jetta had a 60000 mile service. The service advisor recommended replacing the timing belt. VW recommends inspecting it at 60000 miles and again every 20000 or so and then replacing it at 105000 regardless. My service advisor says it is so time consuming to access the belt to inspect it that if one were to inspect it one should just change it and be done. What do you think.

    Thanks for the video. Very educational for a first-time watcher. I do have one question:
    At 2:00, is there any reason you chose to loosen the cam sprocket vs. the other gear's (injector pump) sprocket to accommodate the new belt? I know it's already locked in, but it sounds safer to try to avoid fiddling with the cam with the belt off.
    Or does the injector pump gear not have the same cone system inside?

    What do you guy usually do if it comes into your bay and it has already jumped time? How do you deal with it?

    • @BOHICA_
      @BOHICA_ 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nick B TDIs are interference engines. If you are referring to jumping time on the crank to cam timing, then most likely bad things will happen and a head removal probably will be required to fix valves even if no damage evidence is seen. In worst cases, lifters are damaged too.
      If you mean jumped timing on the injection pump, then no physical damage will happen but the injection pump would need to be retimed to get the engine to run or even start up.
