    I've always hit the ball high. As I've gotten older problem is worse. I'm very wide in build and I learned yesterday that narrowing the triangle of my arms makes this drill easier and prevents the dreaded hook. It lowered my trajectory a bit and improved my divots. Going to try this again today and work on consistency. Love your no non-sense approach.

    Thank you for the drill. It sure has helped my game immensely! To describe how it changed, I was only able to achive 50-60 yards with a pitching wedge. I shoot about 110-120 yards as long as I have my lower body stable and not lift up causing skulled shots! As a hockey player taking up golf, it hasn't been an easy road for me with golf until I was able to put the slapshot and golf swing together. David Leadbetter, quite a gentleman in his teachings, as well. Thank you!

    I’m coming back from heart surgery and I’ve decided to rebuild my swing as part of physical therapy - along with cardio of course.
    Hitting my iron shots high and weak has always been the worst part of my game; my 5 iron shots fly on everyone else’s 8 iron trajectory. Your concepts resonate with me and I started using your method around the green and my chip shots got better immediately. I’ll try pitch shots later this afternoon.

    I love all your videos! you have helped me a great deal. My instructor calls this "covering the ball". Something i cant figure out. What specific anatomic part of right hand takes the hit and feels the impact. I was told once the bottom of index finger, but then someone told me the palm, or the bottom joint of index finger???? I would love to ask an expert this. I cant thank you enough for your videos!!!

      Thanks. I'm afraid I can't be specific, and I don't recommend you try to find an answer that specific.Get the motion of the club going, then see how it feels TO YOU. That would be my recommendation. Hope this helps.

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vincent,
      Thanks. Usually when people have a hard time getting off their right side it's because they accelerate arms and club too early in downswing. Leave the arms up in place for an instant as you start down, it gives you a chance to shift some weight.

    Adam, I love the idea. My concern is that most coaches insist on very "loose" wrist movement. I've followed Paul Watson a bit and his loose wrist style has helped me but I'm definitely losing distance. What's your take on the loose wrist theory?

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Todd,
      I think it's both. The wrists should be somewhat loose (or at least mobile) in the backswing and change of direction. You'll notice great players hinge the wrists freely going back, and that the wrist cock increases in the change of direction.
      That said you'll also notice the club shaft pretty stable at impact. To do this at high speed requires some tension. Look at photos of great players at impact, it's clear they are not relaxed and loose all over their body.
      Hope this helps.
      Best, Adam

    • @toddliszcz1348
      @toddliszcz1348 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Adam. I fully understand. A few years back I swung much like your video but I think I started to exaggerate the swing and lost it. I think that's what happens so often to most golfers. We get a little bit so we want more. The more we want is when the swings heads south and we start all over again searching for a better swing. It's a vicious cycle haha!

    I actually tried this drill when I was on my last 5 balls using my 58*. My half swing improved from 50 to 130 yards and I was swinging easy. Hard to believe but it's true. I will try it on my other clubs. Btw, will this drill work on a driver as well?

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear it. Regards the driver, the straight line relationship between left arm/club at impact would be the same, but upper body would be more behind ball to give it a level hit.
      Best, Adam

    • @lKiDlz
      @lKiDlz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you just said you hit your 58 degree 130yards ? Not to mention half swing as well!!!! I can just get my 56degree to 120 yards out and my driver is averaging 290yards. 7iron 175 yards , that is bloody impressive mate!
      How long do you hit your driver or 7 iron ?

    • @harabas1
      @harabas1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was down to my last 5 balls when I used my 58*. My carry was 100 yards but the roll was quite significant at 30 yards and that was just half swing with no real effort. I was expecting the ball to just go higher with at most 10 to 15 yards roll but it didn't. I just remember significantly delofting the club like it was just hovering above the mat for a long time with no flipping and I was hardly gripping the club. Tried it again the other day but I was not able to get the same yardage so I'm trying to figure what other factors might have contributed to it. Previous to this, I had a similar experience where I was hitting my 20* and 17* hybrid 240 and 250 yards respectively. Again, I'm not able to replicate it. I'm not a big hitter so this is a big surprise for me. I know it would sound like it is a ridiculous and an exaggerated claim for a lot of golfers. I just hope that with the help of the above drill plus figuring out the other factors that might have contributed to this that I will be able to become a consistent big hitter.

  • @geansai333
    @geansai333 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're suggesting a stronger grip, closed face say etc.. but you've not mentioned something: wrists. My wrists are so loose that I'll always have my club head pass the hands out. I think you should address this aspect of how early release kills lag.. I know most golfers need to loose their wrists up, but I thought I'd mention. Cheers.

    I'm having a hard time understanding a little bit on this concept, because I've tried delofting the higher clubs and the ball does not get good height to land on the greens. If you're delofting the higher irons that much, won't it technically hit the ball with the same distance and height as the the lower irons that you don't deloft as much? How can i get a good height on my shots while delofting, and, therefore, hitting the ball farther? Thanks!

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      With decent speed a short iron (9 for example) may fly a little lower, but it will still apex reasonable high, and should have plenty of spin. Great players de-loft the long irons too (not quite as much as short irons), also the longer shaft and lighter swing weight help produce more speed.

    For some reason when I try these types of drills I start shanking the ball off the hozzel a lot. Any idea why or what I can do to prevent that from happening?

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd guess that as you get your right wrist bent coming in to impact you push your hands too far away from your legs (body), causing a heel hit.
      I'd take some practice swings where you set up to a ball (club behind ball, as though you intended to hit a shot), then as you swing intentionally miss the ball on the inside of the ball target line. It would be the opposite of the shank.
      Hope this helps a bit.
      All the best, Adam

    • @RussC123
      @RussC123 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scratch Golf Academy This is very insightful, thanks for that info. I think you hit the nail on the head. Today as I was pitching in the back yard (focusing on bent right wrist) I noticed I have a tendency to push the path out to the right and never release my hands. I will give your drill a try.. makes complete sense. Also I seemed to make really good contact when I focused on clearing my left side through impact.. seems like it helped my hands start exiting left instead of continuing out right-wards. Thanks for the tip!

    maybe I am not getting this. why deloft a 8 iron to hit a 6 iron? why not just hit the 6 iron?

      Fair question, I hope I can help a bit. The shaft is designed to have forward lean (de-loft) at impact for 2 reasons. 1) the slight descending blow cased by shaft leaning forward allows player to strike ball before turf. If shaft had reached vertical (full loft) by impact it would brush/snag turf before ball quite often. 2) For maximum leverage (in this case applying pressure to ball with club) we need the shaft at least in line with the lead arm, left arm for me as a right hander. To test this try pushing against something solid (like base of a door frame) with a club, you'll see how much more pressure you can apply when hands are forward. The outcome is a de-lofted club at impact.
      Please let me know if this helps. It's a key concept, and will really help your golf if you can master it. Best of luck!

      Sorry you are struggling. I'd recommend hitting lots of half shots, at pretty slow speed to ingrain the feel.

      Scratch Golf Academy: that's a PGA gimmick. Only giving half truth keeps em coming back. By product? Short results with no consistency

      You're entitled to your opinion. Thankfully a lot of people don't agree with you. There is a lot of instruction out there, I encourage you to look around and find something that suits you better.
      All the best, Adam

    I would subscribe but I'd want less than 2 minutes of pointless talk in a 5 minute video.
