I'm not going to lie, this barely seems a 'recipe' or a 'cocktail' but Anders is so damn entertaining that I'd probably watch him do it with every spirit on his shelf. I'm in the DC area and I've made a bunch of these in honor of the official cocktail. Very refreshing on hot days, and we get some.
You're the only TH-camr whose ads I don't skip, it was such a great idea to have Freja with you during those! I'll have to rewatch this ad, as I think you were showing us a cocktail recipe, I just did'nt listen because my whole attention was on the most cutest doggo there!
We had a wonderful dog from the Dominican Republic (Nina) that looked very much like your dog-she was a total sweetheart. So i always look to see your dog “helping out”
Hi Anders ! Good to see that our favorite barman is out of hospital and doing what he does best - making cocktails for his devoted subscribers ! All the best to you & Az ! That dog of yours really knows how to sit quietly at the bar without bothering anyone !
Going to see if I can find some Chinola. I did grab a mango, a bit'o passion fruit syrup, tequila, lime, agave and made myself a frozen one with the tajin rim, of course...now for the video 😀
On a hot summer day, a nice simple cocktail in this style can be very refreshing. It's not going to be overly sweet and it's easy to tweak to your own personal taste or mood. This would be a great one for me when doing something like spending a weekend sailing, or camping somewhere. It doesn't require a lot of tools, and it's quick and easy to make. Great video. I'm not a huge fan of gin as a rule, but I am looking forward to giving this one a try.
This has been my go-to drink for 20+ years. When I was in college in the early 2000's I tried to order it at a bar, and the bartender didn't know what it was and acted offended that I was ordering it as such instead of just saying "gin, soda, lime." I haven't had the nerve to order a gin rickey by name since then, so this video is incredibly validating. My taste in cocktails has gotten more complex since then, and I usually order something more elevated when I'm out now, but since I'm type 1 diabetic, this is still the best low sugar drink that I know of. Great video!
I love how you identify your sources. Respect! I also enjoyed how you experimented with three other variations of the cocktail, shedding light on the versatility of this simple lime + club soda template.
About a year ago I stumbled across Rickey's in an old cocktail book I have. I made a gin rickey first and it was ok... but I wanted to get weird: Rye Whiskey Elderflower Tonic Lime Juice This a VERY different tasting cocktail. I now enjoy them during hot afternoons.
I'm a gin and tonic guy. However, sometimes the tonic is a little cloying. Then, I do half tonic and half club soda. I call it a gin tocky. I know, one of you guys are going to run with this and get all famous, but that's okay. It's my gift to the world. You're welcome.
My dad was recently diagnosed with diabetes, so my cocktail hobby/addiction lost a fan, but now I'm thinking I'll just start making him a bunch of Rickey's and see which one he likes more.
Diabetes really sucks and ruins a lot of things. In case you aren’t aware, alcohol converts to sugar in the body. You may want to have him check with his doctor, so he knows what he can and can’t do with diabetes.
@leeanderson7339 he is allowed small amounts of sugar, since insulin breaks down a lot of the sugar. He just needs to control his sugar intake, and alcohol is not as big of a problem like say hard carbs and sugars. And plus in a cocktail it's a relatively small amount of alcohol.
My mum has diabetes too, so I’ve learnt to use erythritol (aka monkfruit) as a sugar substitute for my cocktails. Comes without the terrible detriments of aspartame and without the diarrhoea that comes with xylitol. The erythritol works in everything from daiquiris to tommy’s margarita’s to long islands. They have both white sugar and brown sugar variations. 0 calories from the sugar, whatever you consume will just be passed out. Never turned back!
Love a gin rickey. When I make mine, I tend to go easy on the lime juice and experiment with different gins and different flavored bubbly waters. Good times!
This is making me think Toni Basil shouldn’t have sung, “Hey Mickey” but “Hey Rickey” - “oh, Rickey you’re so fine!” Never tried one, but might be in order from this hot weekend!
I will definitely be trying this drink, but with Tequila and lemon lime, or even a grapefruit wedge. Thanks for this recipe. I enjoy drinks with minimal or no sugar added to them.
this is the one of the best coctails for one of my friends that doesn't like sweet drinks and sometimes he wants me to make him "some good drink". this does the trick in many cases. Just changing the base for practically any spirit.
Started making these months ago, I had to look up the name after putting together the ingredients.I didn't use the lime shell, and used Gun Powder gin, and Schweppes club soda given to me as a Christmas gift.
Anders, props for using Scofflaw! Love it. Also just purchased 4 rocks glasses and 2 coupe glasses, and I'm looking forward to putting them to use next weekend! Cheers from a fellow Chicagoan.
How bout dat! I been making these for years, usually with lemon in them coz its easier to find... Never knew it had a name! Doesn't really matter I guess, I'm having a beer now...
German here, love your videos and my friends regularly try your recipes :) thanks for the work. Sadly Curiada doesnt do Europe :) Maybe you get an international sponsor soon haha.
Definitely enjoyed this video and will try making a Rickey with Hendricks. Is that a sin? Also, just made a purchase from Chinola. Very excited to try their spirits!
I’ve got sparkling water on tap so I make a lot of drinks like this. Whiskey highball (w/ scotch & lemon) and Ranch Water are the two most common but love a gin Rickey too
I'm normally a gin and tonic kinda girl but, l bought myself a Gin Advent Calendar from a local distillery and have been wanting a way to sample the various gins without adulterating the flavours too much. This sounds perfect. Shameless plug for the Reefton Distilling co here in Aotearoa/ New Zealand. They are making some outstanding gins with native plants and herbs as some of the botanicals. Their advent calendar was a great way to try them. Current favourites are Summer gin and Little Biddy Rose Gold. 🍸
Not just 1 version, but 4 Gin Rickeys!…..beautiful Anders….I like the first version because of the tartness, but don’t mind adding a little sugar for the “Tom Collin’s” path!🤗🤗🤗👌👌👌❤️❤️❤️ have a great weekend and as always “CHEERS!”🥃
This video made me try the drink...it's wonderful and I'm a diabetic so it's perfect...try other the versions he showed but the original...Fords gin is a delite glad I discovered it...great addition to my gin collection.
Ten years ago it was relatively easy to get Genever gin here in south Florida. I’m told that winter residents from Quebec liked it. Now it’s been extirpated: ALL GIN MUST BE DRY GIN! Pretty much all other distilled liquors must have a flavor and sugar added, though. Like rum.
This is what I usually drink at home but I do like it sweet. When I was a teenager I worked at an ice cream place that sold lime rickeys and raspberry lime rickeys every summer so I guess that's what I'm used to. I use liquid sucralose which works a lot better in that application than in coffee. I'm still waiting for it catch on in bars, I don't like explaining my order, even when it's this simple.
This is my go to summer drink. I came across it by making it myself, throwing Gin, Lime, and seltzer together during a family outing and discovering it was a Rickey.
The first drink I bought legally, I just remembered, was Wild Turkey and soda, with a slice of lemon. We're talking 1974 here! Sounds like a Joe Rickey to me. Thanks for the memory!
I do like seeing Freja - and Az sneaked in to the edge of the sponsor ad, too! It's great that your sponsor ad reads are as interesting, practical and useful as the main video - good job, Anders, Az and Freja!
Once again, the highlight of my week, The Anders Show video ✌ I just like your style! I actually just got my first Old Tom Gin ever (it's Swedish, "Hernö", unopened), so I might just try it in this.
Massaging the lime won't magically produce more juice per lime. It just means that normally people don't extract all the juice out of a lime because not all the pulps are squished. It's an efficiency thing.
I like gin rickeys ; sometimes i use fever tree mexican lime soda, but i feel it's a rickey-manqué since its quite sweet. That Martin Millers is quite an unusual gin but i imagine it could be good in this. I find it harmonises well with elderflower tonic .
I love how easy this cocktail recipe is to modify, hubs and I are planning to try a couple of variants, especially the Joe Rickey. Just one question - if you make it with moonshine, does that make it a Rickey Bobby?
Funny story about the lime "hat"- George Cassidy, the biggest bootlegger who sold to Congress and Senators during Prohibition wore an emerald green hat so the capitol police on his payroll would recognize him and allow him access. that's where we get the brand Green Hat Gin. It was once a local favorite, but after the pandemic, Green Hat sold to MGP and is no longer made in DC. One of the many things that's changed about the Chocolate City where I was born and raised, but that's not a story for this video. Love from the three stars and two bars, and a forever Southeast girl.
Hey Anders glad to see you are on the mend. Coincidentally, I happened to see Topo Chico for sale today (which was the first time I saw it anywhere) and pick up a bottle based upon your previous videos. Then this evening I watched this video and alas you're using it. Can't wait to try all four "Ricky" versions tomorrow. Happy your back behind the bar...keep the videos coming. Best to Az and Freja!
Dry Gin Rickey on the agenda tonight! Thank you for the other Gin recommendations too. Not sure I will try the Joe Rickey. I prefer my whiskey in old fashioneds, so changing that with bubbly water seems wrong.....lol
Who doesn't love an aggressive bubble?

Good to see you back. Did the surgery change your voice a bit?
Topo is el top-o!
Malört Ricky… just saying
“Aggressive Bubbles”… love the term… love the Topo Chico!
I am on a keto diet, so any drinks without added sugar are essential. Thank you.
Yeah, it's right on the blurred line of longdrink and cocktail.
Why would you lie?
You're the only TH-camr whose ads I don't skip, it was such a great idea to have Freja with you during those! I'll have to rewatch this ad, as I think you were showing us a cocktail recipe, I just did'nt listen because my whole attention was on the most cutest doggo there!
The Gin Rickey is an awesome drink, and I'm glad you featured it. I think the absence of sugar makes it more refreshing on a hot summer day.
I love a good Gin and Tonic, so all I have to do is basically swap the tonic for bubbly water and use more lime. Gonna make it for sure!
You’ve got it right already! Why change?
@@Pete-z6e Variety is the spice of life!
Honestly the advertisement with the dog alongside was a pretty good video on its own 😂
That was hilarious and VERY entertaining
Very smart move to include that cute doggo 😬
We had a wonderful dog from the Dominican Republic (Nina) that looked very much like your dog-she was a total sweetheart. So i always look to see your dog “helping out”
My heart was torn. Ad boooo.. PUPPER! Ok, fine, you got me. 🥰😂
I like how the camera person is whipping treats at the doggo to keep him there.
Hi Anders ! Good to see that our favorite barman is out of hospital and doing what he does best - making cocktails for his devoted subscribers ! All the best to you & Az ! That dog of yours really knows how to sit quietly at the bar without bothering anyone !
As someone who is Dutch I have to say you pronounced "Jenever" perfectly sir!
What I love about the Rickeys is how much experimental you can get with it, it also is very tasty with infused type gins
Going to see if I can find some Chinola. I did grab a mango, a bit'o passion fruit syrup, tequila, lime, agave and made myself a frozen one with the tajin rim, of course...now for the video 😀

Ohio - can't ship liquor here.
Thank you for finally highlighting the official cocktail of DC! My go-to simple mixed drink.
Started drinking these about a month ago. Love being ahead of the curve.

This a VERY different tasting cocktail. I now enjoy them during hot afternoons.
Sounds refreshing
I love how you can basically add as much or as little simple syrup as you want, so it really feels like a customizable gin & tonic.
I was about to skip past the ad, then freya was being adorable and you were making another cocktail, so I didn’t lol
When the ad is just him doing the show, with a cute dog.
I make mine with bourbon, so good
I'm a gin and tonic guy. However, sometimes the tonic is a little cloying. Then, I do half tonic and half club soda. I call it a gin tocky. I know, one of you guys are going to run with this and get all famous, but that's okay. It's my gift to the world. You're welcome.
Buy better tonic! ;)
My dad was recently diagnosed with diabetes, so my cocktail hobby/addiction lost a fan, but now I'm thinking I'll just start making him a bunch of Rickey's and see which one he likes more.
I'm a fan of Ranch Water, so I can recommend that one for sure. I'll be trying other Rickey's for sure.

This is so simple and on these hot & humid DMV days, you can't go wrong making one or two
this is the one of the best coctails for one of my friends that doesn't like sweet drinks and sometimes he wants me to make him "some good drink". this does the trick in many cases. Just changing the base for practically any spirit.

I do love Chinola's passionfruit liqueur and them having a mango one sounds amazing!

Very interesting. I’ve kinda had this, I use tequila instead of gin and it’s “ranch water” which I love. Will def try these combinations. Cheers!
Agreed! NorthShore’s Scofflaw is fantastic.

@@ChinolaOfficial Just got an email with the Dominican Daiquiri recipe so that seems like a good one to start with.

needed this. I feel like I should know these, but I'm just happy to have em in the arsenal for the summer
I love the Gin Rickey! I add 0.75oz of lime juice for mine but I have a sour tooth.
I add the gin and half lemon into a blender … then strain it into a tall glass with ice.. then top it with sparkling water.
Wonderful! Perfect for the weather today.

A sprig of rosemary as a garnish adds to the piney notes.
THANK YOU for the no added sugar! I am a fan of cocktails, but find the liquors/syrups overwhelming during the hot months.
I use Torani sugar-free sweetener as simple syrup to lessen the sugar in my cocktails. I also use it as the base to make grenadine and other syrups.
