im like you Warren, it doesn't matter the engine i always take the piston out of the liner. i dont want to put one together and find out a ring is wrong. i use soap on liner o-rings. i think the orange ring is silicone. nice to watch a professional work. shooting that sounds like fun, unfortunately the outdoor range i go to burnt up in one of California's many wild fires.
On more then one occasion I have purchased cylinder kits with the pistons already installed in the liners and once I found a broken ring from the factory and on another one a ring was installed upside down on the piston. I will always check them for that very reason.
Next engine build try the John Deere liner soap. Stinks like leather soap, and that might be what it is but it works great. I pull the piston to the bottom and slide in the wrist pin and install snap rings. I push piston and rod to the top put in the o rings and soap them good then push liner into the block and install the rod. I have a Snap On T Puller With washers and bolts I pull the liner in and dial indicate the protrusion. I also use the Permatex Builders Lube and slather it everywhere. Everyone has a better way and I know your way must be working good for you. I just wanted to share that info as Deere Repair tells you to not use grease. I used it until I greased all of my o-rings and went to lunch and came back and they were to big. I washed them in solvent and dried them and expected them to shrink down, didn't work they got bigger. I had to get more o-rings, that's when i found out about the Deere Liner Soap. Like your channel and watch quite a bit. I can't work out in the cold now but remember those cold tools and fingers. Great job you do and your customers are blessed to have you.

Hi Warren, I don't do the road anymore,(i'm too old), but I am a lifelong mechanic,(age 60). I used to have trouble with O-rings staying in the blocks while installing liners too. ugh Detroits! Anyway, I used white grease like you use the red, but the trouble was that the O-rings would swell due to the petrol-base they are made from. I found this stuff called Molykote, and it works wonders! It never swells so you don't get O-ring roll during install and it is still super slippery. Liners just "pop" in with minimal effort and they never roll. if interested, gimme ya addy, and I'll send you a tube! Jay in NY.
they have electrical lube that you use to slide wires in cinduits ,thats safe for all rubber ans isolve with water ,your grease doesnt also at the same time when you final clean your liners ,best of the best is transmission oil ,just detergentsn and cleans amazingly ,rebuilders uses that all the time

I was taught, keep the cam followers in the same hole in which they came out of because, there "worn" to that spot, at least that's what I was taught. I just tore a 6068 generator engine down today, it had excessive blow because the air filter was clogged and it sucked dirt in past the air filter seal and dust the engine out .

He is in N Colorado, not sure if logistics are a problem for any machining jobs but looks like he's a go-get-er and might be at least a backup for you. As myself a former machinist-mechanic from the railway rebuilding EMD locomotive MOTORS (yes I said motors.lol f*$k him), quality of his work and shop setup is impressive. I never use petroleum based grease on rubber gaskets and parts because it will soften and ruin them. I use sealicon lubricant. It's not made from petroleum.
I’ve been looking at a lot of different engine options for my 75’ crew cab because everyone does the 12v Cummins, I really think it would be interesting to a JD swap though, might be something to look into🤔
Most of the transmission assembly goo is nothing more then colored petroleum jelly unless you get the synthetic types. I never use red transmission assembly goo because it is the same color as transmission fluid which can make you think you have leaks when you check for leaks after a transmission overhaul. For liner o-rings I prefer silicone based o-ring lube which runs about 25$ a tube.

I rebuilt some parts of an old Cat engine once.Usually i work on small machines so i was happy to get the opportunity.Some aspects were surprising.The workshop manual was giving ridiculously precise liner projection numbers which had me in knots.The specs were in hundedths of millimeters if i remember rightly Oh- and i got completely fooled by the term 'lithium soap'.For some reason the internet wasnt (at the time) showing a clear answer.That had me wondering for a while. Hopefully everyone gets a laugh out of this.I deserve it 🤣🤣🤣
I'm from south Germany, I had a 4.5L JD and a 6.8L Claas(jdengine). I get the Problems wird the Cylinder head gasket, but I Think the Problem is the water intercooler, its to small & iff IT leak, water get in the cylinder and when You restart the pressure takes the gasket out. So is the American Intercooler the same like Europa? Regards from South Germany

So, that tells me that there's something else going on in the Drive Train components. When the tractor is in operation, possibly some frame/mounted parts moving around pushing and bottoming out on the crankshaft? If Deere actually warranties the engine I would expect someone from the Deere company to come out and inspect the whole tractor for the above mentioned reasons.
I am pretty sure he is rebuilding the engine himself , the engine has been out of warranty since August ish. When they remaned the engine they used the original dampener which was bad from the start which I’m pretty sure was the demise of the reman engine. Unless I missheard
Why should they melt? The rings are down in the block to seal the liner from the cooling system, if they are bad you will have cooling fluid in the oil. The heat is up at the cylinder head. They can get stiff over time tho, and leak.
What is the story on that neat old blue ford truck? I have seen mechanics install liners with a press or a block of wood and a hammer but never a "foot". To each his own I guess. Enjoy your day at the range. Shooting is another American pass time

My one rep that was with Tom's Agri Diesel and got me started with them then stayed with the transition to Reliance got out because he felt quality went downhill. I'm not sure what's best now.

@@malbojah thanks i obviously missed that bit, 10K hours is nothing though so has that engine got other issues? i've rebuilt those 6.8L engines with over 25K hours on them and very rare the liners have lips as bad as this engine had.

I've found that if you use the lubricating soap that 'Deere tells you to use you can push the liners in easily by hand, no need to use a hammer.
Dawn works best for me.

It's going back to Deere for warranty coverage. Discussed two videos back I think. Likely an out of balance crank.

No, the hot bit is at the top of the piston, the other bits should be the same as the water temperature.
On squatch253 channel he talked about some o rings swelling with some lubes. He used tire mounting lube on his cat engine o rings
