Speaking of kids. My daughter just finished 6 years of college and passed the BAR exam and is now employed as an assistant district attourney 200 miles away. I rented a uhaul loaded her up and me and the wife drove up and got her settled in. When she first started school I realized she wouldn't be coming home every day anymore. I have to tell you it hurt for a while but it gets better. I was mostly worried for her. Kids today are educated and smart and my daughter is no exception. Tell your wife it will get better and a phone call really helps sometimes. Like the rancher told you we are grateful for everything you do and the content you bring here.You are right about plastigage. Never hurts to break out the gages and do a double check.
I remember my middle daughter going off to college in Kansas. She packed her bags and drove off. My wife was crying big time. I just waved and had full confidence in her. So I know the feelings your wife has. She cried as each girl left the roost. I just told her. They will be ok. And y Trust me. They will fly back to the nest some day. I was right. All her girls are as my grandkids. Now they are working on their master degrees in Education and accounting. I am very proud Warren.

When i did my mechanics apprenticeship we had a teacher who came up with a lot Mnemonics(?) to learn. Here's one for you. "Oil on the thread and under the head makes them rest easy in their bed'". Its funny what one remembers. LOL Then I've always had a white "correction pen" in my tool box . Say you are torquing down a diesel he head with 4 rows of bolts, working in diagonals. You put a stripe or dot on the head of the bolt (facing the front of the motor) after you have tightened to the first stage of say 3. Then you can see where you left off if you get disturbed by customers or the phone or an urgent need to use the toilet. Its also good for timing marks too. But you know all this LOL. Not been in engineering for some years but used Plastigauge a lot then. Instruction then, as today, is to lubricate the strip before placing. Silicon release agent or mineral grease. If used dry it does not spread out properly. Can give a higher gap reading if not used.
Good video, did get a bit nervous seeing the crank standing on the shaky cart though. As with the others, I have always put the plasti- gauge cross ways on the journals.
That's what makes a good mechanic never take anything for granted always check and double check, if you have a doubt in your mind figure out what your questioning. I think plasti gauge is more for gasoline engines where you can have tolerances a little more loosey goosey. The diesel mechanics I worked with always measured with instruments.
Absolutely all machine manufacturers service manuals state “use of plastiguage to obtain bearing clearance specifications is unreliable” “ At minimal The use of micrometer is recommended to obtain reliable clearance specs”
Rotate crankshaft after torque off each bearing to check for resistance or drag.Plastiguage is good for checking for underspec journals as these don't drag or bind.However you don't want play between bearing and journal.
I commented to Lex Tech lighting that you need a lift table with a stainless steel top rows of holes with pins machined or with washers tack welded on center you can put in keep the block from rotating. Most of them have wheels on them where you can move them around. As I mentioned in my other comment where I worked we had layout tables,that were cast iron about 6 in" thick with what we called "dogs" to lockdown structural steel so we could square it up and tack it before welding. They were fixed height about 30" high though.
@@JJ-jv1gu I noticed a bent rod using it the conventional way went thick to thin rod was bent slightly as well as any taper issues. I have been building since 1976 Marine industrial engines of all types. I use Micrometers s myself on industrial diesel engine s. Plastigage ok on most gas car motors though. The Volvo diesel I just finished has bearing color codes in tenths of a thousanth fit to each journal .. Deutz and MAN Mercedes have super accurate tolerance also.
Hey Warren just an FYI sometimes you will get plasta-gauge that has been sitting on the shelf too long and it will get hard and not crush correctly sometimes you can easily tell it will be brittle in the paper tube, and also lay your plasta-gauge parallel with the crankshaft
Warren my sons 2007 Edge all wheel drive had a bad whining/growling noise. It was one of the rear hub bearing assembly's. Takes a special t50 torx to get passed the ABS ring. A bit of a pain in the ass but not terrible.
What would be nice if he had a hydraulic lift table that can handle the weight of some of the bigger engines even. Then he could put something like Smooth sheet of stainless steel on it and drill holes in it maybe two inchs apart in both directions and make some one inch pins 6 inchs long with a washer welded or machined in the middle to drop down rows of holes to keep the block from turning on the table. That way he could put maybe a piece of cardboard on it put the pins in just sort of lock the motor from rotating. I was a welder and we had big layout tables that had square holes in it that you could dog your channel down or I beams when you set it up and Tack welded it. But this way a lot of those lift tables have wheels on them and you can move them.
I love my Milwaukee 1/2 “ impact, but watch at the 21.53 mark, it got bumped to lower power setting. Very frustrating. Milwaukee, make a unit where it is high torque all the time! Rant over. Happy new year.

Waren I usually put some assembly lube on the upper bearing before I lay the crank in . that gives you the oil clearance on the top bearing. As it is you have .003 per side. When you were checking with the plastigauge ,the crank was laying tight on the upper bearings. My opinion its a little loose but I'd rather have it loose than tight! With a good oil pump it will be fine!

Ah Plastigage! I remember it well. It saved me a few times when I got the wrong bearing in a set. Or once when I had a machinist cut a journal tapered instead of straight. And Looks like you are using the 'old fashioned' vernier mikes instead of the dial type. And I built a lot of diesels and some race engines without any micrometers (since I couldn't afford them at the time).

Warren, your doing a professional job on the bottom end. I remember OVH a 8V92 and found one box of rod bearings was .10 OS for a standard crank. Thats why I like to measure my bearings. I love that VAL heater because I have it also. I installed a house thermostat to the wiring harness and set it for sixty degrees. My truck customer left my heater run all night and in the morning I arrived it was fifty-two degrees in a 70 by 40 foot shop. The outside temp was five above Zero F. What Make and Model is that torque Wrench? Thanks and Happy New Year.
Check the all wheel drive box over the converter. Holds one quart or less and gets cooked . U tube ford mechanic has good videos on this issue. Good luck ⚒️🦴👌
Yeah those t-cases can be p.o.s. Also the left output shaft bearing goes in those too. I've replaced a few of them. But the t-cases don't have drains but you can add one. Check Ford tech mekeloco on TH-cam he's very informative.

Completely understand you having to go to numerous parts houses to find plastigage. Took me four places to finally get a stick! First place the 18yo pimple faced kid never even heard of it. The next two places knew of it but have to order it as it is rare for people to use it. What? How are people measuring crank/rod clearances? Parts manager said they don't now a days. Just get the crank back from the machine shop and throw in the bearings. WOW.
I have an assortment of 6 and 4 cylinder engines in my farm eqptment one is a Cummins 4 bt, it shakes like hell at low RPM's and I understand the 6 vrs. 4 balance issue but seems like some 4's shake much worse than others? I have a Sisu diesel (made in Denmark or somewhere) it has balance shafts like the hay squeeze you worked on. Seems like if you go to the trouble to design and manufacture the balance shaft mess it would be less cost to add two more cylinders. I had an Allis Chalmers / Buda 6 cylinder engine which was the smoothest running engine I have ever had, that engine was designed in the 1950's I believe, sometimes I think Engineers take one step forward and two backwards.

Hi, Warren, dont be offended by the suggestion, but I chased my own tail on a plastigage reading that made NFSAA and I went around and around in circles measuring and retorquing. Finally I realized the plastigage package had a metric scale on one side and an imperial scale on the other and id been reading the metric one. Looking at your plastigage, though, I think thats unlikely - you dont show a lot of closeups but the quick look I saw didnt seem like it was squashed down as much as id expect it to be for a 2 thou clearance. .

Hi warren I just started watching your channel love it I’m a mechanic for new holland around Calgary ab I got a question I am rebuilding a 3.9 Cummins out of a 256 versatile from the eighty’s I got a question i timed the crank to cam but I am stomped on the fuel pump gear there is the letter f, b, and A wich one do time it to in the Cummins book it doesn’t say it just says pick one to what engine configuration I did pin the pump to Tdc but this thing has no engine data plate so it from the eighty’s thanks
If you pinned the pump at TDC then put it back at TDC with it pinned, if there is no key on the shaft then it doesn't matter where the gear is as long as the shaft and pump are pinned and the engine is in the same position when you pulled the pump.

Back when I started in the 70's assembly lube was STP oil treatment and we used brass shim stock to check the clearance.

This is the best vids you do the ones you are rebuilding engines.
Warren, plastigage should be placed across the bearing , inline with the crank shaft to get the proper bearing clearance .

I measure journal in four places also.
Diesels often in 1/10ths of .001 .

Warren, I had a 2008 Edge, it needed both rear wheel bearings replaced, one at about 50K miles, and one at 70K miles.

your plastique guage has to be position the same direction as the lenght of the crank ,you have a oil grove in the middle ,the support is on each side

Ah Plastigage! I remember it well. It saved me a few times when I got the wrong bearing in a set. Or once when I had a machinist cut a journal tapered instead of straight. And Looks like you are using the 'old fashioned' vernier mikes instead of the dial type. And I built a lot of diesels and some race engines without any micrometers (since I couldn't afford them at the time).

I know the feeling when I hit 40 I needed glasses. Now I am way passed 40 and my glasses are not quite coke bottles. But I have to have glass lenses to keep them from getting scratched up when I am mechanicing.

Warren, your doing a professional job on the bottom end. I remember OVH a 8V92 and found one box of rod bearings was .10 OS for a standard crank. Thats why I like to measure my bearings. I love that VAL heater because I have it also. I installed a house thermostat to the wiring harness and set it for sixty degrees. My truck customer left my heater run all night and in the morning I arrived it was fifty-two degrees in a 70 by 40 foot shop. The outside temp was five above Zero F. What Make and Model is that torque Wrench? Thanks and Happy New Year.
I rebuilt my 5.9 on an engine stand and i had to put my foot on the rails to keep it from rolling around.
Check the all wheel drive box over the converter. Holds one quart or less and gets cooked .

Yeah those t-cases can be p.o.s. Also the left output shaft bearing goes in those too. I've replaced a few of them. But the t-cases don't have drains but you can add one. Check Ford tech mekeloco on TH-cam he's very informative.

Have done it both ways on the same bearing and it yields the same measurement. Sometimes plastigauge is dead on sometimes its not.

Completely understand you having to go to numerous parts houses to find plastigage. Took me four places to finally get a stick! First place the 18yo pimple faced kid never even heard of it. The next two places knew of it but have to order it as it is rare for people to use it. What? How are people measuring crank/rod clearances? Parts manager said they don't now a days. Just get the crank back from the machine shop and throw in the bearings. WOW.

I have an assortment of 6 and 4 cylinder engines in my farm eqptment one is a Cummins 4 bt, it shakes like hell at low RPM's and I understand the 6 vrs. 4 balance issue but seems like some 4's shake much worse than others? I have a Sisu diesel (made in Denmark or somewhere) it has balance shafts like the hay squeeze you worked on. Seems like if you go to the trouble to design and manufacture the balance shaft mess it would be less cost to add two more cylinders. I had an Allis Chalmers / Buda 6 cylinder engine which was the smoothest running engine I have ever had, that engine was designed in the 1950's I believe, sometimes I think Engineers take one step forward and two backwards.
It's hard when they grow up i know that feeling to .

Hi, Warren, dont be offended by the suggestion, but I chased my own tail on a plastigage reading that made NFSAA and I went around and around in circles measuring and retorquing. Finally I realized the plastigage package had a metric scale on one side and an imperial scale on the other and id been reading the metric one. Looking at your plastigage, though, I think thats unlikely - you dont show a lot of closeups but the quick look I saw didnt seem like it was squashed down as much as id expect it to be for a 2 thou clearance. .

Hi warren I just started watching your channel love it I’m a mechanic for new holland around Calgary ab I got a question I am rebuilding a 3.9 Cummins out of a 256 versatile from the eighty’s I got a question i timed the crank to cam but I am stomped on the fuel pump gear there is the letter f, b, and A wich one do time it to in the Cummins book it doesn’t say it just says pick one to what engine configuration I did pin the pump to Tdc but this thing has no engine data plate so it from the eighty’s thanks
If you pinned the pump at TDC then put it back at TDC with it pinned, if there is no key on the shaft then it doesn't matter where the gear is as long as the shaft and pump are pinned and the engine is in the same position when you pulled the pump.

Like watching your videos. As much work on engine you do, I would say it is about time to quit using plaster gauge and go ahead buy a bore gauge.

Someone must have checked Plastigauge oiled bolts vs dry bolts. What did they find?
What does the plasti gauge do? Does it crush it and then that tells you the clearance between the crank and the bearings? Pretty interesting

Buy another 10 plus year old dependable car. Coach up Mom on pulling car trailer behind pickup. When car trouble happens it becomes a Mom chore / student visit and she will bring the other one home for Dad to fix.
