I've just started falling in love with Rolex's and learning about them.. the hidden clasp was literally 60% of what turned me on about the Datejust... such a shame they removed it, they should have added it as an option!
With all the variations of date just and fakes out there I used this to research my first Rolex purchase. Thank you very much I had so much skepticism when I saw some had holes and some didn’t. You even showed me the difference in lug size and band weight which helped alot
Excellent video, I have a 1980 Rolex 16013, with a mother of pearl face and a diamond bezel that now looks like your 16223. I like the band you have on the 16223 I think I will change my band it's stretched.
I have two questions: 1) Do all 116233 have rehaut engravings? I am currently looking at one that is supposed to be from 2003 which does not have any engravings. 2) Was the super jubilee with the hidden clasp introduced with the 116233 so that I can say a watch that has a super jubilee is definitely a 116233?
I'd start locally first. Meet at a safe place like a bank or something to do the exchange. Just see what they sell for on eBay and ask for a bit less for a starting price. Or a bit more and play the negotiating game.
What a great video. Keep it up man, I really enjoy your videos. This would have taken some time to set up! A great vid from a genuine watch enthusiast. You should keep advertising on Archie's channel that's where I found you from!!
It's Complicated mines 7.5 i think. I keep trying to justify getting a 36 because they didnt start making the 41 until like 2009 i believe with the datejust II. So everyone had to wear a 36mm datejust even ppl with an 8 inch wrist. But most ppl are saying get the 41
Beautiful pieces. I inherited a Tudor oyster Prince date day - Its basically the '98 datejust you showed but without the Rolex inhouse movement. It suffers from the same problems. Thin and drilles lugs. jingly jangly lightweight jubilee bracelet etc. Very beautiful but very fragile compared to new Rolex/Tudor watches And infact if anyone wants a datejust but cant afford it. I would suggest getting a 90s early 2000s Tudor Oyster prince date day - a good gold one will set you back 2-2.5k but you make considerable savings over the Datejust and its as well built as older Rolexs as most of the parts are Rolex
My co worker at Publix has a beautiful gold dial and case date just with a gold and steel jubalee bracelet and he told me all the stories behind it and how he got it, it was just so amazing to see one in the wild
What year? I'd try to get 3500 at least. That's what I sold the one I had for. Maybe 3400? I think 3500 though. Granted mine had no box no papers, so...
I've been so tempted by a mother of pearl datejust 36, is the mother of pearl to feminine? What are your thoughts guys? Should I take the leap and go for it?
I look at my Datejust 16233 (1998 issue serial number), and marvel at the fact that nearly every other watch company has copied this design openly and sells it as part of their line, and I have a "real one"! An observation about what any particular Datejust from any particular year is worth is somewhat dependent on its dial (of course). So, when somebody looks at my watch (dealers included), and notices the Ivory Roman Numeral Pyramid Dial, they tend to offer a few bucks more: its no longer available, was never available for purchase separately from Rolex, and very few "loose" dials for sale on the secondary market. If you like the dial, you buy the entire watch.
I have a vintage rolex datejust but I'm still trynna think if its from the 1970s or 1980s from my relative. I have it on my channel but I'm not sure. And my relative forgot what year he bought from.💖
I don't get why everyone believes that a heavier watch is superior. You are wearing it on your wrist all day, the lighter it is the better! The impression of quality you might get from handling a heavier watch is largely an illusion, a well-made lighter watch can be just as good quality and practically just as robust. Vintage steel watches with bracelets weighed about 70-80g (I believe that the Datejust 1601 was 83g). This is a good weight for a watch, why would you want to weigh your wrist down with something that is twice as heavy?
Great comparison of 3 beautiful watches Chris!👍🏻. I too prefer the 116233 simply because of the solid jubilee bracelet! I guess they call it the “ super jubilee “ bracelet... Once again great vid! Warmest Regards, Hisham.
Weird I have never heard the term "holes case" and have been a collector for quite some time. Never heard it from other collectors or friends. Never have even read it in any publication. Always, always have I seen and heard them refered to as "drilled lugs".
It's not strictly true that only diamond will scratch a synthetic sapphire crystal. I have owned the same Datejust since 1989 and have had to replace the sapphire crystal twice. The first time I scuffed the watch on a stone wall and chipped the crystal on its edge. The second time I was in a cycling accident and the cyclops lens was knocked clean off the crystal, along with severe scratching caused by contact with the asphalt road.
@@itscomplicatedwatches I doubt it. The two crystals I damaged were made about twenty years apart. Sapphire is still much harder than mineral glass, of course.
i was having a very tough time deciding between a brand new Datejust or pre-owned Daydate. 42 seconds into this video, i've made up my mind to go with a new Datejust. It's a pure beauty. i hope my gf doesnt see this comment. What do you guys think? New datejust or pre-owned daydate?
Do you think in 1998 date just is a Good investment. I read somewhere that something with the metal was different in 1998-1999 if I remember right. I have been looking for that info for the last 30mins :). I’m looking at a 36mm 1998 two toned date just with a Champagne line dial. It’s priced at $9450ca “7800” American. It will be my first piece and I’m worried to buy a Undesirable year as I’m looking at it as an investment as well as a gift to myself :-) thank you for the video and subscribe to your channel and look forward to watching more
Ditto on the vid...I will never part with my 1995 DateJust with the Jubilee dial. Other than a Sub, Rolex has never made a more iconic and popular watch. If i could only own 2 Rolexes (or for that matter only 2 watches period) it would be my 1996 no date Sub for everyday and my Datejust for special occasions.
How about giving the prices of the watches in the year the watch was first sold 50's, 60's and so on. One other thing how about doing a little something on. The oldest watch or click Rolex made and pocket watches.
It's Complicated honesty have never ever heard of that term before....open lug or closed lug...I guess you could call it an open circle case if you wanted.
Just picked up the 16013 yesterday as my first rolex
The datejust is amazing. So much variety and versatility. Beautiful pieces.

Nice review! I like the modern one for its upgraded features, but the 1990s model hits the sweet spot!
I got the 1991 model as it’s my birth year and I love it , in bi metal , champagne dial
The third one with the dial of the second and I'm sold immediately :)
I love watching watch videos with guys that have American accents. Thanks you..
I bought a 16013 18K 2 tone back in 1986. I still have it and looks pretty good for a 33-year old watch. Take care of it and it'll last a lifetime.
Chateau Bullion yup 👍🏾 mine is a 89
I've just started falling in love with Rolex's and learning about them.. the hidden clasp was literally 60% of what turned me on about the Datejust... such a shame they removed it, they should have added it as an option!

I like the white one. (80's I believe?) Very nice.
Awesome video Sir. You posted something very rare. Rolex watches of past coming up strong, I mean "alive and kicking"! Thank you Sir!
I just got the same 116233 but in black dial, feels right so beautiful, love it!!
Hey i have the same one
Do you have holes in it? Mine has so i guess its year is before 1993
Finally Datejust getting some attention! Thank you for this video!
i think i fell in love with the 16233, i am slowly learning to like the sub 39 mm watch sizes
God, that Buckley dial one is soooo polished! No definition left in the bezel or clasp
What is the price for the last Rolex can anyone tell me please
Helpful, informative and valuable video ! Thank you for sharing !
Great video! I’ve been wanting to make my own video about the various Rolex references. Maybe I still should!
With all the variations of date just and fakes out there I used this to research my first Rolex purchase. Thank you very much I had so much skepticism when I saw some had holes and some didn’t. You even showed me the difference in lug size and band weight which helped alot
Nice video. Not normally a fan of Roman numerals, though the Buckley (sp?) is a true classic. Cheers
+David Williams Buckley is awesome, right? I mean all three are great pieces but that 16013 stands out at times.
Excellent video, I have a 1980 Rolex 16013, with a mother of pearl face and a diamond bezel that now looks like your 16223. I like the band you have on the 16223 I think I will change my band it's stretched.

Amazing video, it helped me a lot in my journey for a DateJust. Thanks!
You're quite welcome!
Hi
I have the Rolex 116233 (with the mother of Pearl). If I would want to sell that off, what would be the right way and mode to do that???
I'd start locally first. Meet at a safe place like a bank or something to do the exchange. Just see what they sell for on eBay and ask for a bit less for a starting price. Or a bit more and play the negotiating game.
What a great video. Keep it up man, I really enjoy your videos. This would have taken some time to set up! A great vid from a genuine watch enthusiast. You should keep advertising on Archie's channel that's where I found you from!!
3:29 Silica carbide, which is a commonly used abrasive, will scratch sapphire. So be careful when using carbide sand paper.
I have a pretty large wrist. How does the 36mm wear on a larger wrist? Do you recommend i go with a datejust 41 instead?
My wrist is a tad over 7". I have some other Datejust showcase videos on my channel that towards the end you can see how they wear on a wrist my size.
It's Complicated mines 7.5 i think. I keep trying to justify getting a 36 because they didnt start making the 41 until like 2009 i believe with the datejust II. So everyone had to wear a 36mm datejust even ppl with an 8 inch wrist. But most ppl are saying get the 41
Ethan Merkley 7.5” is pushing it for a 36mm Datejust. I’d try on both sizes and go with what you like.
Hey Chris, about how much would the 3rd watch you reviewed cost of the second hand gray market? That being without the diamonds or MOP dial.
+Jamie Pringle over 8k.
Thanks Christopher
16233 looks the best to me. But wish it had solid links
Agreed
I like the 2010s one. Very much improved.
Does the 116233 have the glide lock system?
Thank you for the video.
Learnt a lot from it 👍
Wrist watch check! Great video BTW!
Great video. Loved it. Think I preferred the watch face of the oldest model.
126233 is the latest Rolex Datejust in 36 mm ! Love these watches !!!!!
16233 is what year rolex pls? Great video btw
I believe it was late 90s.
hello i have a rolex oyster perpetual datejust but it has numbers instead of roman numerals or diamonds is this a rolex or a copy
which one is the slimmest must subtle version?
Pretty sure they’re all 36mm.
Beautiful pieces. I inherited a Tudor oyster Prince date day - Its basically the '98 datejust you showed but without the Rolex inhouse movement.

do you think the Dayjust is a manly watch? does it look good on your co-worker?
Is a 16233 36mm rolex datejust two tone champagne dial worth $4,000 a good deal? Thinking of buying it.
What year? I'd try to get 3500 at least. That's what I sold the one I had for. Maybe 3400? I think 3500 though. Granted mine had no box no papers, so...
original box and papers can boost your day date by atleast a $1000
3rd watch is amazing. just no diamons and its perfect
16013 aka the American Physco, my personal favorite.
This is a great VID on the Datejust!
Awesome video. How much would the 1998 one with the black face go for generally ?
4k-ish
@@itscomplicatedwatches Awesome, thanks!
When Rolex starts the no holes case for 16233? Is the stainless steel 904L?
My guess is mid 90s but I'm not sure.
I've been so tempted by a mother of pearl datejust 36, is the mother of pearl to feminine? What are your thoughts guys? Should I take the leap and go for it?

Nice to see these evolutions. Have you planed to make a comparison between the 116xxx and the newer 126xxx ? I would like to see this. Cheers.
I have not. Maybe one day I will!
Im glad rolex returned to the previous case shape in the 126xxx. The 116xxx looked way too chunky
I ❤️ the classic Datejust
I just noticed something I hadn’t before, the Roman numeral for 4 is written as iiii, instead of iv. Why is that??
It's an older way of writing roman numerals, iirc.
Awesome video!
what about on an oyster bracelet where those links hollow as well in the earlier models? until 116XX
Nothing wrong with hollow center links on Oysters from that era.
Great video man a question why didn't you put yours in the video?
+Jarod Stevens I totally should have.
Weird I have never heard the term "holes case" and have been a collector for quite some time. Never heard it from other collectors or friends. Never have even read it in any publication. Always, always have I seen and heard them refered to as "drilled lugs".

Day-Date for me but if you're into the two-tone go for the DJ!
Do they have red of this? I mean watch’s face.
A red dial Datejust? I don't believe so.
Do you have a video for date just black dial ladies wear how to tell a fake .. great video.. keep it up
When did they switch the sapphire on the datejusts
First Rolex to use a sapphire was in the early 70s. By 1980 I think they all had a sapphire. Maybe not the Submariner though.
Awesome watches Christopher
That black dial sheesh

hello i am here because of rolex datejust..i have a 3rd one gift for me but I don't know if fake or real
I'd take it to an authorized dealer. They'll take a look at it for you and let you know.
I have rolex 62523h18 how to know that if my rolex is fake ???
Take it to an AD or a master watchmaker and have them have a look. There are ways to tell.
Would you say that 116233 will have less stretch than the earlier models?
+Judith Li yes because newer design and solid end links and center links.
