i have a non-datejust circa 1970 14K two-tone gents watch that is fairly beat up. It still works and keeps time, but the second hand has come off in side the watch face and is bent now, via the hour hands action. It took a bit of a shock, got whacked in a fall. Its genuine, but its not a valuable model to begin with. Repair costs are a tad ridiculous considering the value of the watch when in working condition. Spending 35% of the watches value to fix it seems ridiculous. Any suggestions?

Really, the best thing about Rolex is that the movement is an instant giveaway. This is not the case for most other watches that use ETA or Valjoux or modded variations... here's a nice addition for you - gold solid end links - almost never right on a replica. Bad crown etchings, bad rehaut, uncentered pearl or lume, loose fit at lug end
A patina is like rust, but for copper. Many times the fake watches might be made with some copper to save money, but once they rust, they get a greenish-blue color on them.
I have 2 ladies Datejust Rolex which seems to tick so many boxes, one of them even has the Rolex crown engraved into the crystal glass at the 6 o'clock position, but I'm still not 100% sure. They are both one tone watched, but on the outer casing at the back of one of them - on one side it has 18K stamped and on the other 750. Does this mean this one could could be gold? There is no sign of any visable tarnishing on either of them.

yes, it does not have cyclops on it .. but it's heavy, the minute hand (dont know the term) is accurate as what the vid is saying, automatic, but no cyclops

Even assuming you get a black Submariner, or one of the DSSDs that are so common now with a Clone 3115 movement there are still tells. Rehaut depth, bezel alignment, crown guards, crown stem and tube, lume, the R O L E X + serial printing on the rehaut, the fact that 316F stainless doesn't have luster of 904L
lol for got handstack order for GMT II (there were a few with proper handstack, but poor movements)... subdial spacing, no lug holes where there should be some, position of crown in relation to crown guards, shape of crown guards, color of handstack pin, height of lume (sometimes should be flat and is bulbous), the shape of the "10" on a submariner bezel insert is often wrong, pearl height and positioning, any misalignment in dial markers, see-through case backs. Be wary of ANY special editions.
i'm wearing it right now, its 21 jewels and says on the back "rolex LTD - 21 jewels- syncronous-waterproof" the face has no rolex name, just the crown just below the 12/24 hour mark, that is the only mark, however i have never myself removed the rear cover the watch band is dark brown leather. i had this cleaned ans lubed by a rolex dealer in boston and he said he never seen or heard of one made for the us army. and he's worked for rolex since 1962
you missed out the easiest sign. the magnification of the number. Rolex magnify the date by at least 2x. fakes usually have very little if any magnification on the date.
That's why Rolex watches come with certificates of legitimacy, and if it really bothers you when they say it, carry it around in your bag and show it to the jealous person when they ask. Also, the obvious choice would be to buy from a official retailer.

If one is saying it is really that difficult to tell real from fake, then hats off to the fakers because they are producing watches at a fraction of the price with equal quality. When one buys a Rolex or any premium watch, we pay a price for quality, workmanship and detail, but you are saying the fakers are replicating all of that quality. If so the fakers must be using the same materials and similar or the same manufacturing techniques as Rolex themselves. To equal the real thing would drive up the cost of production to the fakers to a point where fakes are almost equal in price to real.
its easy, buy with insurance. Then take it to a watchmakers and ask if its real or not. If its not get the insurance. Poor people are poor cause they are stupid .
first thing I do is I observe a client with watches like a Rolex I'll go to them and 80% of cases a rented flat or a bad estate is a bad watch but I have visited a guy with a new jeep, a new range rover and a 4-year-old Bentley on the drive of a decent gated road to find him offering me a pair of fake Daytona's and a real Chanel (i bought the Chanel for £350 and sold it for £500)

@themichaelnuckles Any Rolex that costs 20K or more is going to be partially gold (always 18K) and probably have diamonds, or it will be solid gold but with a leather strap. So that fact alone makes it valuable. Also, the value in a Rolex is not just in the materials but in the craftsmanship. It takes over a year to make a single Rolex by hand, and if taken care of it will last for decades. Lastly, they hold their value extremely well. So it has a return. Hope that was helpful.
I have what is supposed to be a Rolex Perpetual "Date" watch. It does not say Date Just. It was given me by my father and I have reason to not believe the story about how he got it. Dad was a secretive sort with a great gift for lying about almost anything. It's a great watch. Bought in either the late 60s or early 70's and it still runs great. I will eventually take it to the Rolex dealer down the street and have it verified whether real or fake. It's a good quality fake, if it isn't legit.
@ArchieLuxury Another thing occurred to me re purchasing high end watches. It is almost as important to be observant of the vendor. If they are incongruous to the item beware, unless they can establish provenence. Somebody with a wreck of a car is unlikely to own expensive watches, or if the watch is worth more than the sellers home etc etc. Likewise a genuine vendor will be hsappy to have the iten examined by an expert and reluctance should ring alarm bells.
@sirajkasai dude it is a ladies Datejust, looks like the 26mm, it is COSC certified, jubilee bracelet, sapphire crystal, diamond set dial, 18K yellow gold (solid), self-winding (not sure of the movement on ladies' models), and I can't tell from the pic but it looks like either a silver dial or MOP... the dial and bezel look aftermarket to me but could be wrong (not used to looking at ladies watches). it is hard to tell from the pic but I would guess this is a late-70s/early-80s model. HAPPY?
seems like your step 2 should be the last step, because it's the most difficult and once you've seen the movement you can tell for sure whether or not it's real.

@kristoafer actually, normally only rare watches appreciate. their value does decline, just at a much slower rate. rolex for instance makes watches today that are simliar to watches they made in the 50's and earlier so their look is timeless and there for always valuable

Apparently now there are "super clones" in which even the movement has been copied and the case will use all the same materials (solid gold, 904 surgical steel). These ones even the ADs can't tell unless they take apart the entire movement.

The reality is this,if you handle allot of luxury time pieces, such as Rolex, you start to see the fit and finish, quality of steel finishing, plus Rolex hasn't made a gold plated (filled) watch since the early 60's. The overall quality of printing and metal stamping, down to the edges of the case and bracelet gives it away, the sure proof way to check the movement is simple, check how it the quick set functions, also list to the self winding when shaking the watch, Rolex is unique in sound.
This video must be ancient if you haven’t seen fake patina dials. The popularity of ‘tropical’ dials has caused people to fake them, and the patina can be quite convincing. Granted, the tropical faking is being done on genuine Rolex. I expect some of those dials have been added to fake Rolex too.
i have my fathers 1942 us army issue rolex the face is a dull black with 12-24hr and the setting will let you set the time with the first click of the winder, the second click alows you to turn the second hand back i minuite for syncronizing , i dont believe that these us military issue rolex watches were available to the general public, .

Rolex watches are fine. However they are not the ONLY high quality Swiss watch maker. They are but one of many, and not all of them are exorbitantly expensive. I happen to like watches that have automatic movements, sapphire crystals, and a display back. An attractive watch like this with a quality ETA movement can easily be had for less than $500.
The easy way to check, look at the second hand, if it moves in once second jumps its a quartz movement and a fake. You have to look extremely closely to see this, on a real Rolex the second hand moves in 8 tiny jumps per second. Very easy to tell the difference at a glance.
There are higher quality fakes which use automatic movements too though that have a convincing sweep second hand. And Rolex makes a quartz model called the Cellini. But typically if you see a one second tick second hand it's a cheap fake.
Another good and easy way to spot a fake rolex with out having to take it off someones wrist, is just by looking at the adjust piece on the side (the timing change piece) and have a look at the crown, if underneath the crown there are dots, the piece is real, if there is a line then its fake
Best way to tell is if the watch face is Sapphire, the magnifier is aligned perfectly, and if you really know anything about Gold to look at the band under a strong magnifying glass. Majority of Rolex bands with gold, posses 18k gold so you can see very slight abnormalities in the gold that can't be seen by the naked eye. Not to mention many Real Rolex owners such as myself who buy a Rolex from an authorized dealer which is very rare today after the financial collapse in the US, many watch dealers and jewelry stores can't afford the expensive insurance that goes along with being a Rolex Authorized dealer. But the stores that are Authorized by Rolex offer an engravement of your initials on the back of the watch bezel. Besides when you buy a Real Rolex the value of the watch is an actual investment because every line of Rolex is handmade and none are the same, every model is changed slightly by Rolex so they never are the same. Therefore as the watch gets older the price gets higher.
Why do Rolex owners care if nobody believes it's a real Rolex? If you really want to show off by wearing an expensive watch, get something that hasn't been copied a million times. If you're buying a Rolex because it's a good watch then you shouldn't care what other people think.

The best sign to tell if a Rolex is real or fake, is if you look at the crown, on the fake ones the crown is never vertically aligned with the case.

I have what is supposed to be a Rolex Perpetual "Date" watch. It does not say Date Just. It was given me by my father and I have reason to not believe the story about how he got it. Dad was a secretive sort with a great gift for lying about almost anything.
It's a great watch. Bought in either the late 60s or early 70's and it still runs great.
I will eventually take it to the Rolex dealer down the street and have it verified whether real or fake. It's a good quality fake, if it isn't legit.

@ArchieLuxury Another thing occurred to me re purchasing high end watches. It is almost as important to be observant of the vendor. If they are incongruous to the item beware, unless they can establish provenence. Somebody with a wreck of a car is unlikely to own expensive watches, or if the watch is worth more than the sellers home etc etc.
Likewise a genuine vendor will be hsappy to have the iten examined by an expert and reluctance should ring alarm bells.

@sirajkasai dude it is a ladies Datejust, looks like the 26mm, it is COSC certified, jubilee bracelet, sapphire crystal, diamond set dial, 18K yellow gold (solid), self-winding (not sure of the movement on ladies' models), and I can't tell from the pic but it looks like either a silver dial or MOP... the dial and bezel look aftermarket to me but could be wrong (not used to looking at ladies watches). it is hard to tell from the pic but I would guess this is a late-70s/early-80s model. HAPPY?

seems like your step 2 should be the last step, because it's the most difficult and once you've seen the movement you can tell for sure whether or not it's real.

If you're 'The Rodog' then the number 1 best way to identify a fake Rolex is that a Real Rolex will have a sweeping second hand. 😂

you have to be carefull on 1st one because there are no marks because of texture.
There is a sixth step, the weight of the watch. A fake one always is lighter, and does not feel tight when you shake the watch sideways or up and down; it is because all the fake Rolexes have cheap plastic components in its movement mechanism

A little help please,i have a rolex day-date that made of stainless steel.A couple of weeks ago i watched the "How to spot a fake rolex" by this guy named Rick Harrison (Pawn Star owner) he said that rolex NEVER make the day-date model that made of stainless steel.Should i be worried?? i have that watch for 7 years and it still sweep perfectly until today,but i'm afraid it's fake.Who wants to wear a fake stuff......right? @kristoafer actually, normally only rare watches appreciate. their value does decline, just at a much slower rate. rolex for instance makes watches today that are simliar to watches they made in the 50's and earlier so their look is timeless and there for always valuable

I´m collecting vintage Breitling and Rolex watches and the best thing you can do when you bought a watch on ebay or something is go to an official Breitling or Rolex dealer. He can tell your watch is real or a real good fake ;)
Apparently now there are "super clones" in which even the movement has been copied and the case will use all the same materials (solid gold, 904 surgical steel). These ones even the ADs can't tell unless they take apart the entire movement.

The reality is this,if you handle allot of luxury time pieces, such as Rolex, you start to see the fit and finish, quality of steel finishing, plus Rolex hasn't made a gold plated (filled) watch since the early 60's. The overall quality of printing and metal stamping, down to the edges of the case and bracelet gives it away, the sure proof way to check the movement is simple, check how it the quick set functions, also list to the self winding when shaking the watch, Rolex is unique in sound.

This video must be ancient if you haven’t seen fake patina dials. The popularity of ‘tropical’ dials has caused people to fake them, and the patina can be quite convincing. Granted, the tropical faking is being done on genuine Rolex. I expect some of those dials have been added to fake Rolex too.

i have my fathers 1942 us army issue rolex the face is a dull black with 12-24hr and the setting will let you set the time with the first click of the winder, the second click alows you to turn the second hand back i minuite for syncronizing , i dont believe that these us military issue rolex watches were available to the general public, .

@themichaelnuckles Rolex are waterproof which is why the oyster perpetual range are milled from one block of solid stainless steel/gold/platinum. Yes many watches can last 41 years however my rolex which was bought for £1200 is now worth just shy of £7k....
If the person knows it's out off your depth. .they will ask you if its real or not. .
But having said that. .a rich person can wear a fake. .and not even be questioned
@sameercid In certain environments you can't wear fake watches, if everybody has a real watch and one guy comes with a fake, people will just lose respect for him. If you can't afford a real one, certainly don't buy a fake to impress people from a "higher society" it's even better to not own one instead of a fake.

Hello, i have found a Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch long time before. I placed it anywhere in the house and earlier I found it again. Maybe it's real. Its not functioning anymore but i have this feeling that it's real.

ANY1 can own a Rolex, its NOT only for rich people, my husband got himself the Sea Dweller & a yr later got me a two-toned 1 on sale for a little over $5k..Our jeweler has a system for preferred customers that you take home the jewelry & they automatically charge ur card(in our case debit) on a date that you'd want them to take it out monthly so check w/ urs, if u wanna take a chance go right ahead but I'd go to a Authorized Dealer unless you don't mind sayin "NO" when people ask "Is it real?"

Rolex watches are fine. However they are not the ONLY high quality Swiss watch maker. They are but one of many, and not all of them are exorbitantly expensive. I happen to like watches that have automatic movements, sapphire crystals, and a display back. An attractive watch like this with a quality ETA movement can easily be had for less than $500.
The easy way to check, look at the second hand, if it moves in once second jumps its a quartz movement and a fake. You have to look extremely closely to see this, on a real Rolex the second hand moves in 8 tiny jumps per second. Very easy to tell the difference at a glance.
Also, if you put it to your ear it should go "TickaTickaTickaTicka" instead of "Tick..Tick..Tick..Tick"
There are higher quality fakes which use automatic movements too though that have a convincing sweep second hand. And Rolex makes a quartz model called the Cellini. But typically if you see a one second tick second hand it's a cheap fake.

Another good and easy way to spot a fake rolex with out having to take it off someones wrist, is just by looking at the adjust piece on the side (the timing change piece) and have a look at the crown, if underneath the crown there are dots, the piece is real, if there is a line then its fake

Best way to tell is if the watch face is Sapphire, the magnifier is aligned perfectly, and if you really know anything about Gold to look at the band under a strong magnifying glass. Majority of Rolex bands with gold, posses 18k gold so you can see very slight abnormalities in the gold that can't be seen by the naked eye. Not to mention many Real Rolex owners such as myself who buy a Rolex from an authorized dealer which is very rare today after the financial collapse in the US, many watch dealers and jewelry stores can't afford the expensive insurance that goes along with being a Rolex Authorized dealer. But the stores that are Authorized by Rolex offer an engravement of your initials on the back of the watch bezel. Besides when you buy a Real Rolex the value of the watch is an actual investment because every line of Rolex is handmade and none are the same, every model is changed slightly by Rolex so they never are the same. Therefore as the watch gets older the price gets higher.
Why do Rolex owners care if nobody believes it's a real Rolex? If you really want to show off by wearing an expensive watch, get something that hasn't been copied a million times. If you're buying a Rolex because it's a good watch then you shouldn't care what other people think.
